Only real Petersen Vise Grips, made in DeWitt, Nebraska.

Here are mine (not including a few welding clamps I have on my welding table):

Now you're talkin!! 34 pair of Peteresen and counting! I pick them up at garage sales and pawn shops for $1 most of the time, my best score was the bar clamps, I think they were in the $10pr range. :willy_nil

Better than the Std. manual SM tongs ZK, just slower, but if you really need to grip something and bend, they don't re-open..

What's about their practical limit thickness wise? I made a few pairs of edge menders like yours out of old diag cutters and end nippers. Wasn't sure about those vise grip specific ones though.

Not sure about max gauge that could be bent. maybe the VG web site has a max spec? :dunno: certainly its less that the thickens of the jaws. Probably 1/3 or less... They do stick out a bit, unlike the "bulldog" tongs I made.

I got a 5pc set with pouch on ebay recently for $50... They didn't say Petersen in the listing and were poorly described. Thanks to this website, I knew what I was looking out!

Dunno how many pairs there are around here -- probably a dozen were I to look hard enough.

My favorites, by far, are the ones I grew up with as a kid, now in my 'box. They belonged to my grandfather, whom I never met. The last patent date is 1942 -- they're old fershure, way back before they had the release lever.

You wouldn't lose money.

You PROBABLY wouldn't lose money. Depends on the price you buy them for. After ebay fees, shipping, paypal fees, you could easily break even. Specific ones on ebay can fetch decent money, but a lot of pairs won't sell for more than $20 (after shipping). It also depends on the packaging that they come in.

Buy them to keep and pass on to your kids/grand kids. My favorite pair is the one my wife's grandfather gave me... it was originally my wife's great grandfather's... I use them everyday.

I like threads like this. I really do. I'm always amazed at how many of a particular type of tool some of you have. I can't imagine why anyone would need dozens of pairs of Vise Grips, but I'm still impressed when I see big collections like some that have already been posted above. The worst part is that I'm usually motivated to buy more after seeing what I'm missing out on. Here's my meager collection. All are Petersen made in Nebraska. Good thread!!

The first pic is my vise grip drawer. It includes the Irwins and chicoms.
The second pic is just the Peterson/DeWitts. I've been keeping an eye out for the good stuff at YS and FMs, but most of what's out there has been abused so I leave it alone.
Eventually I'll need to move to a bigger drawer.

Does anyone have the 4LW, 7LW, or 10LW? Do you like them, do you ever use them, would you buy them again? I have a buddy with brand new Petersens in all 3 sizes, he has NEVER used them. They don't really have a high resell value on ebay so I'm not sure if they are worth actually buying.

I have the 4LB, ( same deal, old PN) and yes, I'd buy it again, and will buy the other sizes if I stumble across them.

See post #30 above.......I do have the 4LW. I can honestly say that I don't recall ever using that tool, but it seems that it would be very handy under the right circumstances. I actually don't use any of my Vise Grips very often as it is. I kind of see them mostly as demolition tools of sorts. I'm sure they have many uses, but I find myself using them most often to remove bolts, screws, fasteners, that are stripped, broken off, rusted, etc. I usually try to use the best/correct tool first, but when that doesn't work, I break out the appropriate size/model Vise Grip and let those teeth clamp down on the "stubborn offender." That usually does the trick. Of course the fastener is usually trashed after that. There have been times when I had to remove a fastener that I needed to save. In those cases, I've wrapped the fastener with SEVERAL layers of masking tape to avoid the Vise Grip teeth marks. Sorry for going of course there..... Getting back to the original question. I'd say yes to the larger versions of the 4LW. If I came across good Made in the USA models at reasonable prices, I'd most probably buy them simply for the "just in case I need them" factor.
