A recent Hot Deal post by a GJ member, TheWhiteMamba, about NewAge cabinets set the wheels in motion to get my garage organized. 19 wall cabinets were delivered last week. I took the week off to put up french cleats and mount the cabinets. I figured I'd post up a quick review.
The Reader's Digest version - I'm very, very happy with them. I can recommend the cabinets and ordering from ShopStorageCabinets.com. I do not recommend ordering these from Sears if they ship with UPS due to shipping damage. Long version starts now...
After a Sears fiasco, I ordered the cabinets from shopstoragecabinets.com. John was phenomenal to deal with and is GJ member. He answered my questions, sent me an email invoice while we were on the phone, and placed the order the same day. No fuss, no muss.
NewAge is based in Canada but has dealer/distribution network in the US. I spoke with them with a series of questions before placing my order. Their reps, Rene and Carl, were knowledgeable and on-point.
The cabinets are the Pro Series. They're welded 18 gauge steel and powder coated. COO is China. The exact specs from the NewAge website are:
The cabinet manual says cabinet capacity is 160lbs (shelves are 30lbs and the bottom is 100lbs). Not sure why the discrepancy exists. The cabinets weigh about 75 lbs with the shelves installed. With 18 gauge metal, they are stouter than I'll ever need in my hobby garage. Having handled 19 of the cabinets, I can say the fit up and welds are consistently good. The bottom and top are spot welded and the back is mig welded in 3-4" intervals.
The cabinets are powder coated and are available in black/grey or charcoal/taupe color combinations. The powder coating seems to scratch easier than I thought it would. Not sure if its a thickness problem or the type of powder coat. The exterior finish is consistently good. The interior finish is occasionally wrinkled where someone went heavy with the powder coat. Not a significant nit for me.
The 2 shelves can be adjusted using the punched tabs. The shelves are re-enforced underneath with a 3" 18 gauge channel. The doors are mounted using piano style hinges and pop rivets at 5" intervals. One interesting feature is the perforated metal on the inside of the door.
The magnetic catches, both top and bottom, close the doors securely. The locking mechanism turns smoothly. I won't use the locks but I wish I had asked if it was possible to key them all the same.
NewAge includes lag bolts and fender washers for attaching to stud walls and bolts for attaching the cabinets to one another. I went with my own hardware for the french cleats.
Each cabinets has 4 plastic plugs (2 on each side) that protect the cabinet sides when mounted side by side. These plugs can be removed to bolt the cabinets together.
Shipping was done through a 3rd party from NewAge's warehouse. The cabinets arrived wrapped on 2 pallets with shock sensors showing the pallets hadn't been dropped. Never seen that before. After unwrapping, the boxes were in all good condition. Some of the shelves had come loose during shipping scratching the interior, especially the ones shipped upside down.
While I was around back unpacking the cabinets, UPS dropped off an order from Sears that wasn't cancelled. The cabinet was dented and scratched but the frame was not bent despite the abuse. So I'd recommend finding another supplier that does not ship with UPS. This one is going back to Sears.
