Hey all,

I know we all like build threads, starting mine out.. 40x40x12.. So far we have dropped 10 trees, dug out 6" of ground and moved 60 ton of stone.

Today I got the stump out from the middle of my pad. slowly but surely, 3 weeks of 3-4 hours each night..

Time lapse of the pad, well most of it, before the dog or kids moved the tripod on me..

Thanks lots of seat time in it, but the time lapse makes it look easy.. Undersized but its mostly a mower 80% of the time so it gets the trick done. Got the stump hole filled today and compacted.

Next up is about 3 more inches of stone to get me above grade, then the crew can get started with the building. I'll have about 7-8 inches compacted, should be a nice solid base for the concrete after the build.

Got more stone dropped off, he got the dump truck stuck and was holding up traffic in both directions. Grabbed a chain and the Duramax, she was hopping and spinning but got her out..

PH where are you located that seems to be a rock free zone in this great country of ours? I took one passwith my front loader and got about 6 feet before I hit rocks/ boulders the size of my tractor

great job...looking forward to the build updates..

Looking at the plates on his truck, maybe Michigan ? :dunno:

I see a future awesome build going on with somebody that has been waiting on a long winter to pass.

Upstate NY... Near Rochester..

Yes this weather has been killing me, that area was all clay, so digs pretty easy.. The ground was rock hard when he picked up the stone, then we got 1/2 inch of rain in 20 minutes and when he got there sunk right it....

Had him dump most of is in the front yard after we go him out, just means a long run back to the pad..

Crew came over today and staked everything out so they can start on Monday. Only thing i have left to tell them is where i want the 1 36" man door.

going in the gable end is 2 - 14x10' garage doors. So i am not sure if should put the man door on the gable or flip it to the one side of the building. As space will be a little tight with 28' of doors and fitting in another man door. Anyone run similar doors that has a picture of the layout? what do you guys think?

JD (3320?) is a working machine, as long as you don't use it like a real backhoe....

F-i-L has one and I love it, we use it for everything around the farmette.

best of luck

Yesterday the crew did the ceiling for me. then I dug out the front so i can get a good base. I am going to extend the cement out 6-10 feet in front of the building.

Got more stone coming today. Then I should be ready for concrete..

Ceiling going up:

How they had it graded, but the front only had about 2" of stone, i wanted 5-8"

After i dug it all out and started putting stone back in..

Most of them are cool about it, if you are cool to them. Generally standing by doing a little traffic control is no big deal. If they make the call and have to have a wrecker on scene, they'll be there the entire time till the wrecker is there, truck is pulled free and then they might have to do a report on it.

Ok got my base in front of the shop back in. Here is what i am thinking, 1" drop from main shop floor to the outside slab. Outside slab 1.5" slop to drain away from the shop.

Question is do this in one pour or put a joint between the shop and out side?

I noticed that you put wooden posts directly in the ground, is that common practice over there (I've seen it on GJ before)?

Great looking garage, the 2-tone color scheme really works & the flag is a nice finishing touch.

Definitely put a break in the concrete between inside and outside. Especially if you ever plan on heating the building...

Good question ---- and yeah, the two-tone and the flag look good.

Yes its very common to put the poles directly in the ground.

I plan on putting rebar in, but was still on the fence about two seperate piece of concrete or just putting a controlled cut in between. I bought rebar to re-enforce the pad and also running fibermesh..

I didn't put a vapor barrier in the ceiling yet, as here in NY its pretty uncommon to have a vapor barrier, most attics here dont, just have dry wall then blown insulation. So its one of the remaining questions I have..

Finished up wiring all the lights today, got the lines ran down to a switch box. Also added the garage door opener outlets and then one extra for a pull down extension cord reel.

Garage openers:

Extension cord reel outlet:

Then started the rebar for the floor, I am only putting it in the two main bays and entrance, running fiber mesh in the entire floor and 5000psi concrete:

Got half the barn outlets wired today, also got the main lines run to the back wall and the other side. So tmrw i should be able to bang out the rest and get all the outlets in
the boxes.

My little helper out there with me today, fascinated by the barn.

I am taking the advice... Waiting for the mason to come out and check things out, i'll have to cut the rebar there, but no big deal.

Builder said that he's done it both ways 100's of times and doesn't see a major issue either way unless you are heating all winter. (which i am not) I am planning on running a tube radient heater only when i am out working..

You don't have to cut the rebar if you want to do the slab and apron in separate pours. In fact, you don't want to. Just notch the form boards and let the rebar run long. You want to keep them tied so they don't settle and move independently over time.

Got the vapor down and got 80% of the re-bar done, ran out of bars. Originally I was only going to do the two bays, but once I started I said screw it and decided to do the entire floor. Whats another 300 bucks at this point.. :p

I didn't think stapling the wire to the top of the wall girts was code.

Doesn't there need to be a minimum distance from the finished walls to where the wire is?:dunno:

The build is looking good however.

It's not... shhhhh It will be plenty far from the inside wall, but only 1" from the outside wall..
