In need of a Shop crane

I need a shop crane, something that's capable of no more then 1000 pounds, but here's my problem I don't have the room to hang anything from the ceiling. So my question is has anyone ever used a hoist frame or similar with any luck? I will only use it maybe a dozen times a year but I'm getting to old to to be lifting really heavy stuff. Or if any of you fine folks have a better setup I'd love to see it. Thanks.

any reason a typical 2ton engine crane wouldn't work?
granted they don't have the reach of a ceiling mounted, or the one you posted, but they can be used for quite a few different things.

My garage is 30' wide by 24' deep. In trying to keep as much stuff off the floor, but that might be a very good option. I will need to see how high it lifts.

An engine hoist is great, for a lot of applications, but that jib crane (that is what the setup in your link would be called) is better in certain situations.

Do you need to be able to move the items being lifted?

Are you trying to load them into or take them out of a pick up truck?

Do you have a strong enough support to mount a jib crane?

You say no more than 1000 pounds, do you really mean it?

Some examples of what you are going to pick would help too.

I was going to suggest a folding engine hoist.

Allow about 36" square for a folding hoist. I have a 2 ton Torin unit and would not be without it. Park it in a corner and put a small shelf over it for misc stuff, pretty soon you won't miss the floor space.

Strouty, in reality no more the 750lbs but I'm trying to err on the side of caution. I need to lift stuff from either in or out of a truck bed or the floor onto some saw horses set up like a work bench, for example garden tractor front mounted snowblowers and mower decks or Pulling the occasional engine. I know they don't weigh that much maybe 250-300lbs for a snowblower and say 600lbs for an engine, but I'm thinking in the future I don't want to worry about not having enough lift capacity. Yes moving it around would be very nice but again I'm limited on floor space with two full size vehicles in the main stall and my work area in the 3rd stall.

NUTTSGT, and Falcon67 what's the maximum lift height of a engine hoist. With my garage ceilings being 10ft high I have no worries about not having enough lift height with a jib crane. Thanks for all your help

The BiL is going to make an A-frame, but he has room to spare. The issue I see with the jib crane is that a lot of times, when I pull an engine, the vehicle's up on jack stands. If that's the case, then swinging the jib crane may not be enough and every now and then you'll miss the cherry picker.

Where would you mount that JIB?
How do you not have room for a ceiling mounted hoist but you have room for that JIB?

The jib crane is attached to a 2" pipe, I was thinking on a schdule80 pipe anchored to the cement floor and ceiling

I think the engine hoist would work well. The reason I asked all the questions was to make sure you weren't trying to load really bulky things. An engine hoist is tippy if you are not careful. Even the fold up ones take up a good amount of space.

I have one that is very rugged and I think you could find a used one for under $250. It is a knock down version, so it can be completely disassembled in about 3 minutes. They make a stand that holds everything, but I have yet to find one. I can easily put it in my station wagon and when it is assembled, it is very stable. They rate it at 1500 pounds. This link is from a rental place, but you get the idea.

I would go with an engine hoist also. My hoist has removable legs, so it takes up just a small amount of space when not in use.

This isn't the hoist I have, but it will give you the idea.

I have a folding engine hoist like pictured. It will lift the hook to a bit over 6-1/2 feet. I use it mostly for engines, but its been useful for a few other things I needed in and out of the truck/trailer. It folds the hoist arm down and the legs up, and I put it against the wall. Sticks out about a foot and a half and is probably 3 feet wide.
