Need a Wilton vise pipe jaw - stamped

I'm almost done restoring the Wilton 1750 bullet vise I picked up a couple weeks ago. Everything looks good except I'm missing 1 pipe jaw. These seem to be different than most Wiltons, it's a stamped and folded piece of sheet metal. I tried searching, but all I come up with is the solid type, which is held in with screws. Anybody else run into this, and maybe have a source for a replacement jaw? Here's a pic of the jaw, and one of the vise partially restored. Color in pic is way off, it's actually green, Rustoleum Metallic Racing Green, to be exact.
TIA, Jim

i think technically that is a tradesman, not a bullet? Never seen one that took that type of pipe jaws, but wondering if that kind are available as well as I have one of the wiltons that say "WILTON" in huge letters on the side missing the same one as you IIRC...

454: I've never seen a Wilton jaw like that and I own and have owned quite a few. want to post a few more pictures of the open jaws and that space where these pipe jaws would fit if you had all of them?

they look pretty simple so hopefully you can find or make one.

Here is a pic of the pocket where the pipe jaw goes, and a pic of the nearly completed vise, just need the pipe jaw, and an end cap, and maybe a decal for the side.

1982fxr, I think this vise is both a Tradesman and a bullet. Has the round slide enclosing the screw, and the bullet shaped fixed jaw, so why wouldn't it be? I realize there are different grades, and have 3 of the 4 "C" series, as well as a baby bullet and a 3" or 3-1/2" machinist vise, all share the same design near as I can tell.

Wonder if it is possible to call Wilton to find out about the pipe jaw?
Jim

looks like about the same size hole for my pipe jaws on my Tradesman/Machinist Wilton 1780 (i think mine is that model # that I'm attaching pictures of) except yours doesn't have the screw threads.

i wonder if you can tap a couple holes for small screws and get these pipe jaws which work great. i think Wilton sells the pair for $40 if you can't find a member with a parts vise.

i'd call Wilton before drilling any holes to see WTF they were thinking when they made this design.

Good luck Ragtop

I've had a couple of those, I think 1750 or 1755 was the smallest I had, and they took the better (not best) style of pipe jaws. Never seen one like yours that took those jaws, but I am certainly no expert.

head over to Zoro and look up wilton replacement pipe jaws. $10 and they take one screw each to mount, which I bet you could easily tap to make fit?? I have a single old one on the shelf if you need any measurements.

But, I did see one that was broken behind where the pipe jaw goes on and it was hollow back in there, so fyi as far as tapping that is not one solid chunk of steel back there...

edit: still wondering if there is a source for the OP's original type of stamped jaw??

Right, Zoro was the only place I found Wilton pipe jaws that were affordable (great price).

I have no idea which model number I have, -think it's a Wilton *******, haven't found a M# number anywhere. If you can't find the pipe jaws your looking for, perhaps these will work with a little modifying.

I've been through at least 4 other vises since owning this one. It's the sole survivor and hasn't let me down. This is one tough vise and still works perfectly. Needs a little paint though ;).

Yea try Zoro for Wilton pipe jaws.

Good Luck!

that's a Mechanic's Vise, I think model #'s are 74x, last digit would be jaw width, ie 746, 748...

Shouldn't matter. The screw is literally only to hold the insert insitu. Long as the cast is thick enough to take a couple of turns, that's all it would need.

i agree with Fretters. i don't think a hole into the cavity which i think there is if you drill there will weaken the vise. some of the pipe jaws are only held in with a side hex screw on some of the Wiltons. the area where your pipe jaws doesn't have enough meat on the side for that option.

my guess is the pipe jaws that came with your Wilton are home made, but not sure because Wilton has been in business for over 70 years and i haven't seen every one of their vises yet.

those look like the factory jaws that came on some of the smaller/lighter duty ones, I have one with those...

Mystery solved as to what the pipe jaws might look like on Rag's vise. or is it the same vise. Rag's looks nicer. anyway before the Ebay picture disappears i saved it for my vise files because never have seen a Wilton like this. here it is.

just found another Wilton made vise with that style pipe jaw and it has a screw holding it in. go figure on how yours were held in.

looks like there are many vises that have these in case you want to find one and not buy a pair. still trying to figure out why yours doesn't have a screw like this one i took a picture of.

this one still has the Napa Belknap sticker on it to answer why these Wilton vises were not stamped or cast with their name on them.

Thanks guys for bringing this back up. My pipe jaw is folded sheet metal, not nearly as rugged as that machined one shown by Durka. It is held in by tension, bends are not quite 90 degrees,, I squeeze it with Vise Grips to remove or install it. Being unable to find anything, I ordered the ones from Zoro, should be able to make them work one way or another.

Just to finish this up, I ended up making some aluminum blocks to hold the pipe jaws from Zoro in. The blocks are an interference fit in the jaws of the vise, then the pipe jaws are screwed in to them. Kind of a pain in the *** to make, but they worked out really well. Couple pics of the completed vise, showing the freeze plug sourced end cap, and the decal from Kevin Scott, super nice guy with great products, and even better service. Got the decal and some swivel handles for another Wilton, was perfectly happy with plain hex nuts till I saw his awesome handles, decided I had to have them. Will post pics of that vise, and this one, in the vise mega thread when I get a chance.
Thanks, Jim

Late to this. Mine is a Wilton 1646 that has this style of pipe jaw.
