Hi all, heres a few more images of an old Parker vise I am restoring. The lead screw keeper was missing so we reproduced one from an image I found on the web.

Jon: you have some talent sir and i'm certain you will be asked by members to make a few more of those Parker screw holders so be prepared with a yes and a price or a firm no that one is enough.

by the way didn't you start a thread on half this vise earlier today. i know you are new, but unless it somehow got deleted you could have continued on adding the Parker parts to that thread to keep the existing comments.

anyway nice vice and you have some talent sir

Nice job Jon, that image is from my website. If you needed more dimensions just let me know. I still have the Parker Horse shoe. Did you use brass or bronze? Oops, just read you used brass.

Thanks Mr Scott, I barely noticed it when we bought this old house. It had an odd looking crescent shaped piece which I assumed was a quick release for the moving jaw which proved to be a crude repair. It took me an hour to remove it due to so many additions to the bench, the bolts were hidden. I cant believe how heavy it is. By the time I got it from my basement to my truck I thought spine would never be the same. As I started to restore this vise I really came to appreciate the robust beauty of this early fixture. Every chisel and file mark tells a story. I decided to preserve this old vise by leaving all the marks on it. I am having the jaws zinc coated along with the wrench and related hardware. The locking clam shell in the swivel base was broken so I took it to a local trade school that does reputable work to repair it. I will post a few more images as I progress. Thanks again for your help on this old girl. I will display it in my shop when its finished.

Thanks guys, yes jaws were there, a bit worn, no cross hatch to speak of. The tapered pins wouldn't budge. I had to drill them out, not to mention there on an angle.

Jon: when they coined the expression "these guys are good" i think you were one of those guys. nice work on the Parker.

I happened to take a gander over on the other side of GJ tonight looking at trailer builds and you were posting one you built. nice job on that and i bet you and KMScott could build a town with the tooling and skills the two of you have.

keep up the good work and don't forget to take and post some more pictures for those of us that can only dream of having all those tools and skills to use them.

good luck

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get your vise down to bare metal? Thanks!

Ah, never mind. I see in another thread you media blasted it. I'd like to do that as well, but I would have to pay for the job. I'd like to keep my costs down. Maybe I can trade for some blasting.

Every chisel and file mark tells a story. I decided to preserve this old vise by leaving all the marks on it.

Top man. :D I'm of that approach too. I'll merrily fettle any damage which impacts functionality, file to remove burrs etc., but everything else, mark wise, gets left as is. They're all grains of history.

Nice work on the restoration btw. :)

All this flattery is going to go right to my head guys lol. There were so many layers of paint I had to use my weld chipping hammer to remove the bulk of it. I filled a small tank I have with acetone and let it sit with the lid closed. It basically fell off in 20 minutes. I used a very coarse abrasive in the blasting cabinet, ( I posted the build on the fabrication area ). I used self etching primer, Rustolium paint, Oil base art pen for the lettering then several coats of clear. Every mark tells a story on this old relic. I really feel more like a curator. With the influx of low cost / quality goods I feel items like this deserve preservation.

Good job, nice progress on the vise, and GREAT job on the collar! You should figure what you can make them for, and offer them once you get to 100 posts. I can almost guarantee at least a few guys will need them and a few more may want them just for the pure look of it! Heck, I might be one!

Ok, Ive decided to zinc plate the moving parts of this old vise. ( and a bunch of other stuff that was rusting away). Heres a few pics before plating and a few of the machining process of the horseshoe.

Is it just me, or is there a heck of a lot of waste material before a part falls out? :dunno:

Well that's true lol, its part of the process though. I had some material around, normally would have ordered something a little closer to the profile, Im anxious to get the parts back from the platers. I went with a nickel rather than zinc.

All the components for my Parker vise came from the platers. Going to re-assemble tomorrow, more pics to follow.

JJ: you do have some talent sir and thanks for sharing the pictures of the Parker screw holder you made.

can't wait to see that shiny old Parker put back together and mounted to your bench.

by the way have you figured out a bulk price for those Parker screw holders because i'm sure i'll need on somewhere down the road? did you already get a few requests from other members?

Hi, not sure about making these components. I would have to do some calcs. Im not opposed although. I noticed a gentleman on GJ is reproducing cast ones.

i saw those cast ones and those would work better than nothing that is for sure.

if it's a nice vise like this one i'm attaching pictures of that KMScott made the jaws for then your holder would look a lot nicer. i'm guessing your Parker when it's finished might look as nice as this one that was for sale in Arizona a few weeks ago that might be on top of the food chain in vises. nice job with the nickel plating.

Its beautiful, no question. The lettering is perfect. The one I rescued was pretty rough and I kinda did a sympathic restoration on it. I am on the prowl for these old vices now. great hobby.
