1968 Wilton C1 resoration begins. NOW COMPLETE!!

OK. I'm sure you guys have seen my other threads. Well I'm moving forward with the resto now so I'm doing a resto thread. I got this 1968 C1 off of craigslist for $150. :p

Pic 1 is how it looked when I got it. Just really needs a good bath, some TLC, and some paint.

Pic 2 shows the first major problem I found. The bullet end cap is broken where the pin goes through to secure it. Do I dare try to weld the piece back on and grind it down. Or another option might be a longer pin. I haven't measured anything yet. But I don't know if the pin actually goes into the vise nut. If it does, it's barely any. I think as long as I wouldn't let the pin protrude into the screw cavity I would be all right. What would you guys recommend.

Pic 3 shows some rough casting burs. When the tube was at the end of its travel the weight would cause the rear of the tube to tip up into the rough casting scratching the tube.

Pic 4 shows the repair I did with a carbide burr tool in my die grinder. All better now.

Pic 5 shows the trashed pipe vise jaw pins. Are these correct. I seen a guy on youtube do one and his was a shorter pin through each side. Do they need to be a grade 8 1/4'' bolt cut to length maybe. Just one long one.

Well that's enough for now. I'll come back later with update's.

Is it an option to rotate the cap 90* and redrill new pin hole in that location?

Now that's a very good idea. If I didn't care what it looked like, it would work. But the bullet end is indexed. It looks good in the right position. it has a bit of a flat side on the bottom. But if you rotate it, it doesn't fit so good anymore. And I don't have the proper equipment to do the job. I would have to pay someone. And that aint happenin.

I think I'll just make a longer pin and see what happens.

I wouldn't worry about the hole in the end cap, when using the vise all the pressure is pulling the cap into the body. There is enough left there, and the other side, to easily push the jaw back out. I also don't think the pins for the pipe jaws need to be anything special, for the same reason, they just keep the jaws from falling out, no load on them.
Good luck, Jim

Just a bit of an update.

I straightened out my swivel handle's by taking some flat steel and cutting it just a little shorter than the handle, then taping it to my vise jaws. This will let me sqeeze just the shaft with out the knob getting in the way. Then I squeezed the **** out of it. I kept rotating. It's not perfect, but I'm not shellin out $35 or so for new ones. Good enough for me considering what they looked like before.

Then I did a some work on the end cap. It was dented pretty bad. I straightened it out the best I could. Then I did a buff job on it. If it didn't have such an uneven surface, it would look like a little baby moon hub cap. I can see myself in it. I tried to take a pic but the flash drowns it out.

I'm going to buff the handle's next.

Well I got her done.

The color is Plasticikote's ''Rebuilder's Cast Finish''. I wish my camera would get a good pic of the color. But it's not playing nice. It really does look like a deep dark ''Natural'' cast iron piece. Pic 4 below shows the color pretty good. Both my Son and Brother made coment's that, ''That will rust if you don't paint it''. I just smiled. The paint says it will resist oil, gas, and brake fluid. Good enough for me.

I cut all new pipe jaw pin's out of grade 8 bolt's. Now I'm going to have a machinist friend knurl them for me.

I ended up using disc brake caliper grease on the screw, and finishing wax on the tube. This thing is so smooth it amazed me. If I take the dynamic jaw out and loosen the swivel a bit, I can spin the whole vise round and round just as fast as I can go. Maybe I shouldn't really be doing that. But it was a test. :D The same thing with the handle. I can turn it with one finger just as fast as I can go. But my finger gives out quick.

When I first did the lettering I wasn't so impressed. But now that I can stand back and see it, I think it pop's pretty good. Not bad for using a cigarette ****. :)

I may or may not get new jaw's. These are worn on the outer edge's, and tight in the middle. I'll just have to see what happens. But man. Wouldn't new jaw's really set it off.

In the last pic you can see that I painted the horse shoe black. I used epoxy just because that's what I had on hand. I think the black with the stainless steel screw's give it a nice little touch.

Well that's it I guess. I want to thank all you fuy's who helped me along the way.

Just wanted to show how the anvil area I resurfaced turned out.

I used a belt sander. I was really nervious when I first pulled the trigger. I did manage to touch the vise in a couple of spot's when the belt walked. But touch up was no big deal. Then I thought I had better stop. I thought I was rounding the edge's. But I remember I checked it with a big washer last night and it rocked. Now it doesn't rock anymore.

Before and after pic's. I know we shouldn't really use the anvil, but all I'll do with it is flatten washer's or something. You can see in the before pic that the edge's was rounded. So I don't think I hurt it. I think it looks much better now.

I like it...

Brother Scott has jaws for that wee-beastie...

www.wiltonviseparts.net

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!

Ya I know. I've all ready talked to him about them. ;)

I will have a set. But it is at the bottom of the list right now. Hell I had to add onto my work bench just to give Wilton a proper home. :p Of course now I need all new lighting, peg board, and of course I'm gonna have to build some drawer's for the new addition.

What's funny is my garage has always been very unorganized. A real pig pin. But now I'm really getting it straightened up.

Ahhh. What we will do just for a damned old vise.
