I had this heavy 2'square metal table. I finally decided to turn this into a multi use table with welding being its main use. Here's what it look like earlier today.

Plans
Flip up welding table.
2 Reciever hitch vise mounts.
Better drawers for storage.

I did flip table other day.

Folded down

I used the flip table before on previous table. I have to figure out the prop for this one. The hinges are old door hinges.

The vise mount my take. I started with a square tube and a pipe that would fit tight. Welded the square to the frame. On the side I put 2 welded nuts to tighten the pipe down.

I like it. I did a work bench for my boss similar to that. You gonna paint it?

Vise mounting.

The vise I plan to use on this table.

Its my pos welding vise.
I choose this vise vise cause swivels 360 on jaws and base and now using a pipe instead of a square tube a can position vise in about any position.uploadfromtaptalk1399165040770.jpg

I'm far from finished but I built this so I could wheel it under my work bench and still use vise if needed.

I like the sound of the hammer tone, I don't think any coating will hold up to long on a welding table, I'd leave the top clean steel and paint everything else ( just my two cents, but I think that would look sweet with the hammer tone$

nice bench had same idea , with square tubing for vice thought I was original . Guess good minds work on same channel. I thought about it after needing flat space on top of bench to fabricate and vice was in the way . So now its there when I need and not when I dont . The only difference is I will use a pin that goes all the way through . Will it rattle too much ?
Oh my top is quarter in. plate 6 ft long so I can weld anywhere on bench or pound its been well worth the price of steel top .

It might rattle. I made this idea from scrap I had after I saw prices of pieces I needed to buy. I don't believe this is new idea but I havnt seen it done so far on GJ. I don't weld that much so I didn't need a huge table. I had built some nice size tables before but they became heavy plus took up a lot of space that I didn't have. I found those security bars or this design for a welding top works great for my welding needs. The flip table allows me save space and to clamp down machines and many other things as I work on them since this table gets multiple uses other than welding. I plan on making some more reciever mount ideas on this table for other items.

Not much happening as I'm in a holding pattern waiting on drawers. I planned to use some drawers I had but found a cool idea to repurpose some electrical panels. I stopped by a place I know they had a lot in a pile. I just waiting on him to ask boss what they're doing with them. Hopefully, ill find out this week wether to move on with new drawer idea or use my old idea.

Well, I got some work done on table.
Added a metal drawer for storage and another receiver for stuff.
uploadfromtaptalk1400718565189.jpg
I put some wood down to hold the vise when not in use.
uploadfromtaptalk1400718706801.jpg
I tried to use old folding prop from last table but it wasn't working. So I came up with this.

uploadfromtaptalk1400719000178.jpg
I used some old door hinges, the bar is 2 bars off a garage door where trolley attaches to door and pins are just the nuts and bolts off a lawn mower handle. Now it time to finish welding everything up.

I didn't realize how much I love using a vise in this mount and this height. I can position myself or vise almost anywhere I want.

Thanks, I got it free some time back and added 2 bolts so I can lock down the jaw pivot. Its a good idea for a vise and I use it a lot. Only issue is jaws don't open that far. They are 5in wide but only open to 3in.

Being its a cheap Chinese vise I'm not too concerned much welding and abusing it. I plan on doing something here to make it more useable. Havnt figured out exactly

Just thought I'd dig this up, since it's such a useful looking table. I've got a 5.5' welding table myself, with nothing but four legs, castors, and an 11" vise on it. I think I could steal some ideas here, and make it a lot more useful. I've been keeping my eye out for one of those swivel vises because I thought it would be useful, but now I see just how truly useful one could be!

Great ideas here! I think I'd add a bare steel or a copper post bolted somewhere, for a place to land a ground clamp. I see the tradeoff between keeping the top nicely painted and the utility of throwing a part on the bare top to start welding right now. But, for any use of the vise especially holding small parts it would be painful to try to ground directly to something in the vise.

Also, I'd consider a single fold-down support leg on the outboard shelf, with something like a leveling mount or even a simple hex bolt to adjust to the floor underneath. Nothing like forgetting and setting something heavy on the extended work table...

Nice table.
I might try to scrounge the stuff to build a similar one. The fold down extension is nice.
Think I might try a single swing down leg mounted to the outboard side with a screw adjustment for leveling, and some good quality wheels and a lock for more portability. Make it big enough to put my Hobart unit underneath, and half enclose that area to protect the welder.
Heck, with all the weight down low a guy could attach an upright "rack" to hold clamps and vice grips etc...

When I built it actually you didn't need a folding leg. The table was heavy plus the added weight I had on bottom shelf. The angle supports held about anything I put on it. One issue I agree is not having a bare steel top so I just hooked ground to the work.
