trailer hitch reciever storage

I have a number of different receivers for different towing applications. I would like to make some kind of self contained rack or cabinet to store them in. Plus an area for pins, locks and related towing items. I was wondering if anyone has fabbed something up for this. Looking for ideas. Thanks

I just throw them in a plastic bin and the bin under one of my work benches. I guess you could also just weld up a bunch of receivers and have them vertical as well to take up as little space as possible. Most of the time they get banged up and rusty anyways so its almost easier just laying them on top of each other in the bin to take up as little room as possible

all good ideas, thanks guys. My garage is cramped, I like the idea of the 2" receiver rack. Might buy some square tube and weld up some kind of wall fixture. Sounds like a solidworks day tomorrow,

I have the same problem. I think this summer I'm going to build something out of 80/20 aluminum that will hold all the receivers and balls, the weight shift bars from the enclosed trailer, a can of ball lube, a roll of paper towel, and put it on casters so I can roll it around.

I'm working on the same issue. I want them with my truck, last thing I want to find out is that I'm 100 miles from who knows where and don't have what I need... I also don't want them in the cab, something about several chunks of heavy iron flying about the cab if in an accident could ruin my day...

how many receivers is two many...

2-1/2" forged Curt with a 2-5/16" ball for enclosed race trailer and car trailers..
receiver with 2" ball for most other trailers.
receiver with pintel for when you need it.
receiver with no ball for use with a clevis.
a wrench and a 1-7/8" ball to round it out...

Why not in the toolbox?

Or maybe a small rack in front of/behind the wheel wells on the walls in the bed of the truck. They would be up and out of the way

Nice idea if you only have a couple. But what if you have 3 or 4 bars/balls, one is a huge weight transfer hitch, and you have the long weight transfer bars?

I really don't think there is a solution for sway bar hitches. The bars would fit under a Raul but the hitch might have to go in an ammo box. Or one of these;

Sorry I'm kinda taking over.....but it'd be nice to also have a place to store a tow strap. Or tow rope, specifically mine, 4" Amsteel blue. That thing really doesn't like to fit in the tool box. I was really thinking a side box in each side of the bed. 1 for hitches one for rope, out of the weather and locked up.

Hi all, I was thinking something I could mount to the wall just inside the garage door. Based on what I read from you guys, this is kinda what I came up with. Its a small cabinet with a series of square holes in the bottom you could hang your receiver's through with the pin. You could get a few small industrial bins and store your locks and other towing supplies. Maybe a few pins on the side to hang slings and chains etc. You could even lock it and keep your receivers from walking.

That's perfect! Any dimensions yet? And you thinking about wood or metal?

The one I drew was 8" x 16" x 24". Basically a cupboard with some square holes in the bottom. I was thinking of 1" square tubing clad with some 1/16" sheet metal.

I would likely make the bottom a little beefier. I was thinking of machining out the squares and putting in 2" x 1/8" wall square tube pieces to keep the recievers square. Maybe 1/8" plate on bottom.

I don't know how much I like the "hanging through idea"..

I don't know how to word this...but what about making a swinging arm that holds the recievers individually. Each reciever would use a "C" shaped peice of metal the size of the pin whole on the reciever. The top of the c could be a hinge inside the cabinet. And the other side would slide through the reciever. And the weight of the reciever would hold it down against the back of the cabinet.

Like this, except my hand would be there the tube/rebar/whatever metal you use would be where it mounts to the inside of the cabinet. You could make it smaller it's still behind the reciever. Plus if it swings you could use it for any size hitch.

Turn your head sideways...Also note that ideally the size metal used for the "c" would be made out of something that actually fits in the reciever...but this is all I had laying around

I like it, like a towel bar for your recievers, clever. Less material and labour.

My main concern was that when you put the recievers in the square holes in that rack they wouldn't stand straight, plus that's some odd negative wall space underneath a cabinet like that

I just made one last week. Took a piece of u-channel and welded 1" square tubing to it. I think it was 8-6" long pieces of tubing to give me enough room for enough hitches. And then just screwed it to the wall in the barn. I forgot to take pics but can.

I just use anti-freeze jugs with one side cut out to make a kind of tray.
I can get one of those 3 ball shafts in it along with a wrench and some odd sized balls if needed.
Some rags and gloves to keep it all from rattling and I am good.
