We picked up a nice wooded 8 acres 4 years ago with plans of building once we sold our home. Took us a while to sell but finally did last year, so the build is just getting started.

We originally planned a seperate home and garage, but decided to combine as a cost savings measure and to keep from duplicating garage space in house and barn. The home is 42x56 with an 8 x 56 porch. The barn/garage is 48x72 with 32 x 48 being heated garage/shop space and the other 40x48 ft being cold storage. House will sit on basement and shop on a concrete foundation. I will be putting radiant in the heated portion of the garage.

Here is a copy of the current plans.

If interested I can continue sharing build pics. We currently have all the foundation poured and plumbing roughed in. I will be installing the radiant tubing and insulation this weekend. Hoping for some good weather so that they can pour floors this week and start framing.

One building will benefit you insurance wise
With a seperate garage or shop most insurance companies will only cover the out building for a percentage ( 10-20% ) of the total coverage value you have

If it was me I would make a 'mud room' between the house and the shop
Move the bathroom so you walk through it to get to the shop and place the shower and toilet in a seperate little room in the overall mud room

Originally the laundry was supposed to be a seperate room with door just before the first bedroom. Wife wanted the door moved to the laundry room because she thought most people would enter thru the garage and wanted to be able to close the laundry. She's letting me do the garage, so I can't complain.

I got a garage door question.

The door nearest house will primarily get used for our daily vehicles. Should I shorten the door height down from 13-3. I think if I drop two panels it will be around 9 1/2 ft. Seems a waste to open the large door daily for entry and exit, but then hate to regret it in the future. I thought about keeping the full height and setting the door to only open to 9ft or so. In the unlikely event I needed higher, I could release the door from the opener or change the settings. This side will also be heated by radiant, so not opening the door as high or putting a shorter door in, should save on heat loss.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Not sure this would save on heat loss, as a wall would be better efficient. Do they make a 2 stage door opener? Press once to open to say 8ft and the press again to open fully? I have no idea if that exists....just a thought. Is there another door that could be taller so you would still have the tall door height but get away with the shorter height?

Looks cool! Just a few suggestions:
1) I didn't see a coat closet. Suggest this and closet to store things like vacuum cleaner, etc.
2) Walk in pantry is always nice.
3) Your MBR walk in closets appear open to the walkway. It might be nice if they could be closed off.
4) I prefer a master bath toilet that can be private from the main bathroom.
5) Could you make the master bath shower a bit deeper? It looks wide enough but you might want it deeper.

The plan looks like a dream come true. Your house looks roomy and open with a nice heated work place and enough storage for finished projects and future ones. Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to watching your progress. Subscribed

Thanks for the suggestions.

1) There will be a locker/coat area to the right as you walk in from garage. There will also be lots of storage added in laundry room.
2) No walkin pantry, but lots of cabinets and large ones on ends.
3) There is pocket doors on each end of master closet
5) Shower is as large as we could find in a prefab in. Originally had a custom shower, but it got eliminated to save costs. Figured we could do it later if desired.

I have pics, just need to get them posted somewhere so I can link them. I am putting the radiant in this weekend. Supposed to pour floors Tuesday and then start framing.

I really like having the house and garage in one. I did the same thing as you and no matter how much time and thought you put in when you are done you will wish you would have changed this or did that a little different. You will love it no matter what. I put four different size doors in my place. I figured that I would use the smallest door that what I was working on would fit

One can dream of a garage house, but that will never happen in my lifetime, so I will continue to live vicariously through you guys.

That catches me up on pictures to how it currently sits today. Hoping to see a lot of framing over the next week or two.

You know the plans are fantastic when the garage looks bigger than the house! Looking good so far!

Looks good. With the name "compound" I was expecting buses buried into the hillside and branch Davidians.

Slab really looks good.

Here's a few pics I missed from work done Friday. Poured porch and temporary overhang support. Some sheeting on walls.

Looks great! I love the land, looks nice and peaceful and secluded.

Thanks. It is pretty secluded. Won't be able to see it from the road and no visable neighbors. We have about 4 acres of woods between us and the road. Then 4 acres that is fairly open where the house is. There is another 220 acres behind us that is mostly wooded that I take care of and have permission to do whatever on. We have been told they may consider selling us some additional land in the future.
