I found an extremely easy and cheap way to hang a fluorescent light fixture under my single car garage door and it doesn't interfere with the door operation in any way.

A few months ago, I bought a few packs of Add-A-Hooks (Morpheus version) from Woot for $5 each. It turns out that they work great for what I came up with.

What you'll need is the following-
1 pair of Add-A-Hooks
10 foot stick of Unistrut
2 1/4-20 spring nuts
2 1/4-20x1" screws and lock washers
1 fixture of your choice

The Morpheus model is a 2-piece model and I only used the upper half of it. It simply hangs off the garage door track with no other tools. Although I used the Morpheus model hooks, the upper half of my hooks look just like the Praxis model.

I took a 10 foot stick of Unistrut and cut off a few inches so it was the right width for my 9 foot wide door plus the hooks. I cut the strut so that the hook ends protruded through the strut slots. Then I attached my light fixture by removing the cover, drilling one 1/4" hole at each end, attached it to the strut using bolts and spring nuts and reinstalled the cover.

I hung the hooks where I wanted it and simply dropped the strut over the hook ends. It's totally adjustable along the garage door tracks and can be installed and removed in less than 10 seconds.

Total cost for me not including the light fixture was $5 for the hooks, $16 for the strut and $4 for the spring nuts.

My garage door is a 9x7 and the lowest point of the light fixture is 6'10" from the floor. Just make sure you remove the plastic handle from the garage door release so it doesn't accidentally hook onto the light when you're opening and closing the door.

The car is on jack stands in the pictures which is why the hood is above the light.

Is that wiring going under the sheetrock tape on the ceiling? Why do people put up shelving without painting the walls first?

Cool lighting idea; your original post was very illuminating.

Nice catch - I didn't see that! Looks like someone drywall taped right over some wiring! Maybe belongs in the WTF thread?

Yes it is- the garage door opener safety sensor wiring. I bought the house a year and a half ago with the garage taped and mudded that way. There's no point in painting it when the tape job is like that. I was in a hurry to get everything moved in so redoing the taping and painting was at the bottom of my list. I have no basement so the garage is storage for everything.
