I think it would be a case of whatever works for you and what you do. No two pegboards are going to be the same. However, check out your local Lowes, Home Depot, or Harborfreight for all sorts of gizmos to hang on your board for drills, screwdrivers...etc.

If I was doing it from scratch, I'd rip a single sheet of pegboard lengthwise and mount it from about waist to shoulders high (so it could be a backspash for cabinets if needed) then mount french cleats on top of that and above and below. The french cleats can hold the heavy stuff, even your cabinet uppers.

You might get a little interference from stuff like the pliers holders and screwdriver holders, so I'd measure the distance between the cleats carefully for the pegboard ones.

And you'd have to countersink the pegboard so it was flush with whatever other wall covering you'd have.

Plywood, then 3/4 in. strips on the outer edge and center of plywood, then screw your pegboard onto the strips. that way you can use nails or hangers with the pegboard.
