Was wasting time one evening week before last, browsing on Ebay. I did a search for Norbar and found several different torque wrenches. Some were like the one Chammyman got, without the removable head, pretty useless unless you have the ratchet head for it, and several were the production type that require calibration equipment to set them, no micrometer scales. Then, there was this rather LARGE model, that caught my eye. 500 to 1500 Nm and 370 to 1100 ft/lb, dual marked scale, with a 3/4" square drive, push thru 60 tooth ratchet. (the tool is also available in 1" square drive). It was advertised as having been used once, and appears to be manufactured in 2001 and originally calibrated in 2002. This thing is long, about 62 inches, and comes in the black metal case and has an extension handle.

Well, I bid on it slightly above the starting bid, and apparently no one else needed a HUGE torque wrench that day, because I won it for the starting bid.

Norbar makes very fine torque wrenches and torque equipment. This is no exception. The tool is unique in that it is a clicker, but the entire mechanism is in the large bulge of the handle, the long flat tube is riveted to the ratchet head and the measuring mechanism. It is not sensitive to where on the handgrip you pull (many clickers are, I have been shown this in the calibration room at work) and the black tube in the pic is a handle extension that comes with it.

Quite truthfully, I don't really have a use for this, but at the price, I figured I could use it to tighten the axle nuts on a old Ford tractor 450 ft/lbs, or possibly the wing bolts on a Beechcraft (don't recall the torque, but its high), or possibly the tracks on my neighbors bulldozer. Anyhow, I have a neat conversation piece and should I need to torque to 1100 ft lbs, I'm prepared. Gotta get it to work and have them check it on the calibration equipment.

Just gotta ask where you would need such a beast?

Also how much $$$$$ if you don't mind telling. I'm sure these are not cheap to start with.

No real good need for it, just liked it alot. Nice craftsmanship and might come in useful some day.

Anyhow, it sells for something like $900 new, I paid $200 for it.

You know what they say about guys with big trucks....err....big hands....big tools, or whatever.

I'm envious. That's a beauty. I have some work place ag. equipment with fasteners in the 600 to 700 lb. ft.. range.

Does a wrench like that work better than using a torque multiplier on a smaller wrench?

This is the perfect example (to others) of how to score an awesome tool on the cheap even when you dont need it right now. I'm betting you find a use for it soon though... congrats on the score as it looks like a very fine torque wrench.

Received an email from Norbar USA answering some questions I asked. They said......

I would say that you got a VERY GOOD deal. Current price for part#
14004 Model 1500 wrench is $1,319.00. Current cost to calibrate this
wrench and issue new certification is $145.00. The wrench that you have
is 7 years old. You can tell this by the serial number prefix, which is
2001. This is the year of it's original manufacture. These wrenches
are very durable and 7 years is nothing, especially if it has not been
used that often. Anything more I can help you with, let me know. Nice
buy!

This model, along with a wide range of other torque wrenches and torque measurement instruments continue to be made by Norbar Torque Tools in Banbury, England. From Banbury they are exported to all parts of the world. As you may have guessed, I am proud to work for Norbar. You can find out more details at www.norbar.com
