I have decided it is time to make my 2nd garage thread.
Previously I was crammed into a single car garage, and now I am moving up to a double car garage.
The house is still being built, so no action will be taking place as of yet. Even once we move it, the interior list things to do needs to get looked after first, which will stall all the progress in the garage.

Here it is during the framing walk through:
photo-1-1.jpg

That is pretty much how it will be turned over, safe for the ramp. Those should turn into stairs. :p

Plans are to insulate the walls, drywall, paint white. Work bench/storage/tool chest on the left wall and garbage collection in the corner at the back right. The space will be heated, with sufficient light and speakers in the ceiling, with the receiver in the basement. I am planning to lay down tile for the floor. Which brings me to my first question. The builder applied a sealer to the floor, and completed it with a smooth finish, in lieu of a broom finish. Will this affect the bonding performance of a thin set? I would love to not have to do any grinding.

Cannot wait to get my hands on this space!!

Nice - virgin material! You are going to have fun setting that up.

How are you on receptacles? What's your electrical setup in terms of total amps?

What is your end use for the garage? What width overhead door (s) does it have?

I have a 20 x 21 attached garage on the house we are buying and It will be interesting to see your ideas.

End use is scheduled to be parking for two during the winter months, and a bolt turning, PB Blasting, nut busting, weekend warrior space. Tools that will be put into use are a welder, air compressor(located in basement), vyse, grinding wheel and maybe a drill press.

The garage comes with a single 16’ overhead door. I plan on installing a side mounted garage door opener to keep the ceiling clean.

The total incoming service a 200amp panel I believe. The plugs on the walls are running off one circuit, so 15 amps, shared with the outside lights unfortunately. I forgot to tell them to keep them on one circuit, but I plan on adding 2 or 3 outlets across the sides where the bench is being installed. I don’t mind being on a shared circuit, there will only ever be a one tool being used at a time.

Here is the floor plan for now:
325Model1.jpg

Heater is ceiling mounted. Need to think of the hose bib(cross at primary bench) final location, wouldn’t mind getting it closer to the front of the garage. I hate water hoses, but I love washing my cars…
AUX bench will most likely house the drill press, grinder and vyse.
Upper cabinetry is scheduled for right of the garage.

I'll get my elevation sketches up shortly :)

Well, its been a while, and moving/buying all new furniture generates a pile of garbage! The garage was acting as a holding cell for a lot of refuse, making it really hard to get any work done:
4697.jpg

Garbage day hit and managed to clear most of it out and finally got to some work.

Installed four reclaimed 2x4 fixtures, four T8 per fixture, prepping for speakers as well:

Installed R14 Roxul, only have the longer wall done for now:

Overall:

Hopefully I can get poly and plywood up by the end of the week.

I should also mention that my previous floor plan has changed quite a bit. Bench will be along the back wall, while keeping the sides open. I am sure it might change again up until I am installing the bench.

Okay, so looks like I have made a little progress since I last posted...
Installed the rest of the insulation and added poly:

5045.jpg

5043.jpg

Started installing 5/8" TG plywood, only have the one picture but the other walls are done as well:
5086.jpg

Then proceeded to build a bench:
IMG_6331.jpg

IMG_6354.jpg
IMG_6355.jpg

IMG_6358.jpg

It was pretty much installed with tools on the top :)
Its 2x4 construction, with 3/4" plywood on top. It uses the old railing post, which ties in nicely.

I have a few more things I've done which I'll post soon as well.

I'm late to the party, but I'd have added many more outlets before the insulation was installed. Did you run 220 for the welder?

I considered adding more outlets, but one of the first things I did in the garage was change over some winter tires on my wifes car. Having an outlet at all four corners worked out very nicely and should suffice for my needs.

I have not wired for the welder yet, but thats an easy task as the rear wall is backing onto the electrical room in the basement, just need to poke thru the header space. Did it at my old place single car garage as well.

edit: that small bench will be primarily a part holding bench... didnt think I needed one directly above it.

Threw up a scrap piece of plywood above my small bench a threw the recycling bins up there:
IMG_6552.jpg

Got tired of this 190 foot extension cord being a stubborn ball of frozen spaghetti, so I made this real quick as a temporary solution. But I can see it turning into a long term temporary.

This things been wired up for some time. The LiftMaster 8500:

More to come.

Nice idea on the plywood and containers, even if it's just temporary the extention cord idea works that's all that maters.

Thanks guys.
The Roxul stuff is real nice to work with. I could re do that process over and over. It is such a therapeutic process to me for some reason. Not like mudding drywall, which is part of the reason why I chose plywood.

So jelly of your opener..... Man i want one. Where did you source yours?

BTW you should send the moderator (Ryan) a message to get your thread moved to the Garage Gallery section for your build.

Al Parson Electric was the company that supplied and installed it. They gave me a smoking deal on it too. I originally had a 3800 from amazon, but it either had a fried board or the button was the wrong one to make it learn the limits. The installer couldn't verify anything, I got fed up and got the 8500. Now the 3800 is in the basement collecting dust.

Good call about relocating the thread, when I first started it I realized it was kind of in the wrong section, but didn't think it was possible. PMd him, hoping it is.

Looks good so far. You might want to rethink the speakers in the lid. You are not supposed to break the fire separation between the garage and the living space. It will also allow CO from running cars into the house. Chances are that nothing will ever happen but if there is a fire and it gets into the house the insurance inspector is not going to like what he sees. Same goes for getting into the electric panel.

You know readhead, you are right. I am usually conscious of fire separations, or fume separation... but that completely eluded me when doing this. The two speakers at the front of the garage are just in a roof space, where the two near the rear wall are below a room... I can see myself installing a 'firerated' box for all the speakers to be housed in. Good catch.

I installed another electrical outlet in the shared wall with the house, even though I was just going through exterior wrap(vapour barriers in on the inside of the house) I still used a smoke baffle around the outlets, complete with caulking and everything. This is the same manner in which I am adding the welder outlet.

bgarrett : I think what you are referring to is the plywood height? They are 8' boards, uncut. They don't make anything longer here, I wish they did. I am waiting to be completed with shelves and wood projects, and will use the scraps to infill the tops. No sense cutting a full sheet for that space just yet.

My OCD got to the best of me today and finally finished with the screws on the plywood:

Still waiting for the weather to break to paint everything. All this plywood is driving me nuts.

And built this for overhead storage, but ran out of screws.

More on that later.

Decided to hammer out this bench before adding the upper shelf:
IMG_6481.jpg

This thing is sooo huge. I say this because, the bench on the other side of the stairs is literally twice the size of the bench at my old garage. So that alone was considered a big step up, and now this one measuring at 9' is incredible.

I also reused the support from the railing on this side as well:
IMG_6482.jpg

The front face was going to be a 2x6 for rigidity, but after building the adjacent small bench with a 2x4 and testing it out with a stool, a 2x6 would have been too tall to stuff my legs under. So I ripped the 2x6 I had already purchased, down to 4". Maintains some added rigidity and allows enough clearance 

Top of tool box location is kind of underdetermined and just hanging out anywhere. It will probably stay on the smaller of the two benches, as its kind of out of place up there on the big bench.

Current dilemma is what to do with the back board, finish wise. The bench top is going to be a natural stain color with grey framing. And I want to stain the back board too, but there a stupid stamp in the middle of the board, maybe it can be sanded out. Or just paint it grey :dunno: I am so bad with colors.

I just bought a house with an attached 20x20 2 car, with 10 foot ceilings. I will be following you sir, as we have about the same size cave :) Now I just need April 27th to come, so we can close and I can start moding the garage.

Can I ask a likely very stupid question.. Why the plywood and then drywall? My walls are just studs, so I need to insulate and figure out what to do on the ceiling.

You could paint it with that blackboard paint that's magnetic, you could then write on it and hand lightweight items.

Good idea, but the back board will be handing sockets, wrenches, cordless tool, etc. I was originally thinking peg board, but I personally do not like the look, nor are there any good suppliers that have versatile products here in Canada, or maybe I havent looked hard enough. I'll use wood screws to hang all the necessary tools.

That magnetic paint got me thinking about blackboard paint, allowing me to write and keep track of things. I'll have to look into that.

Not a stupid question at all, I get asked that all the time! I chose plywood because aesthetics were not much of a concern of mine, there is no mudding/taping required and all light duty things can be hung off it. Not that I plan on littering the walls with miscellaneous things, but nice to always have that option for that random wall art that needs decent anchorage in a random location :p

I cannot wait for the warmth! It has been bitterly cold these days. I manage to squeeze in some work this weekend. I'll post an update soon.

Here is the update, I installed the shelf above the long bench:
IMG_6606.jpg

IMG_6607.jpg

I keep complaining about the cold, I should really just install whats under the blue blanket ;)

Also not pictured is wiring a second switch for some under shelf lighting. Ran out of time to complete the install.

My brother lent a hand and slapped this auxiliary bench together. It'll house the vyse, drill press and grinder. I'll build a similar shelf under it for all the oil jugs and get some cabinets above it.

My wife was watching HGTV or whatever show related to renovations, and the wife on the show wanted a chick cave for her bike, and they painted the ceiling black. I liked it. I liked it so much I might just have to try it. What scares me is trying and it not turning out. The more I think about it the more I want to try it. I'll need a bright color somewhere to accent though, but want something other than red. Glut orange?

Got some work done on the stereo front:

Monoprice 6-1/2" 40w/100w. Nothing special, but they will let the neighbours know whats going on.

All four are connected to a receiver in the basement. The receiver is connected to my router allowing for airplay via itunes, plex, youtube, etc from my phone.
Here is a picture of my clean set up in the basement :badteeth:

I cringe every time I step into my basement :willy_nil

I also added some task lighting under the upper shelf operating on a separate switch:
IMG_6690.jpg

IMG_6688.jpg

IMG_6691.jpg

The fixtures are just the left overs from all the upgraded fixtures we added in the house, and the bulbs are 16w CLFs pot light bulbs. They hang down pretty low, but I plan to finish the bottom of the upper shelf with plywood and convert these to actual pot lights. Just need to find some that fit within the 3-1/2" framing.

Lights-I posted in a different topic about some lights we put in our kitchen. HD sells some led "cann" lights that fit in a 4in round ceiling box. They're shollow enough for that 3.5in depth. $18 each I think.

Nice work how are the Buicks?

Thanks Sean, both black T-Types are no longer around :( One got sold to an enthusiast and my daily black T-Type unfortunately was stripped and sent to the junk yard. It suffered from all the symptoms that a high milage vehicle has thats seen every winter since 1988.

But, I ended up finding a much cleaner example:
1656.jpg

IMG_8275.jpg

IMG_8261.jpg

IMG_7687.jpg

Its not black, but the white grew on me real quick.

First thing I did to it was rip out a series II L67 from a Bonneville with a blown engine:
DSCN7307.jpg

Thanks to my brother for letting me spill almost every fluid from the car all over the race deck :/
DSCN7591.jpg

Rebuilt it and dropped it in to the T-Type:
IMG_2445.jpg

Image5-1.jpg

IMG_2633.jpg

Currently its in remote storage. But with current vehicles and work required, I dont know if I'll be able to bring it out this summer. Need to get situated with all my cars, that seem to just fall into my lap.

Here is the T-Types complete build thread if you're interested:

Ah he's been hiding in here... :)

Lookin' good lookin' good! Not that I haven't been following on PB, but it's good to see this up on Garage Journal. Don't you worry, I haven't forgotten about all those fluids residing under my race deck. As soon as you get your dance floor installed I'll be over with a jug of used special brew I've been collecting for the past 5 years for just this moment :p

But in all seriousness, I was reading through Dubber's thread last night (he's just around the corner!) and there was a link showing how to easily remove sections of Racedeck for cleaning underneath. It will be VERY interesting to see what's been festering under the tiles in that toxic ecosystem you helped create. Probably a Predator or two, maybe some three headed ants, who knows. I'll pull it up in the spring and probably put a concrete sealant down.

Keep up the good work! More progress and pictures please!

Just the kind of vintage I'm looking for to test out my tiles when I get them down this summer.

ha, let me know when you decide to pull them up, I'll give you a hand and hold your beer.

Keep up the good work! More progress and pictures please!

If this weather ever turns, I'll finally be able to paint which will allow me to set up a few more things.

Thanks for sharing the Buick info, those supercharged 3800 engines are awesome! I had one in a 99 park ave and it was a ton of fun! I will checkout the build thread for sure!
