Hello again everyone!!
Just recently picked-up another Sawyer Tool Company, dual swivel, "Nutyp" Model 604-1/2 vice.:) I'm in the process of dis-assembly and electrolysis rust removal of all parts. The jaw inserts on this 85 pound beast were welded on in the past by someone who didn't know what they were doing.:( With some careful grinding, I was able to remove one insert off the rear jaw but the front insert will have to be carefully machined off. New smooth face inserts are being recreated to match what was original. I have attached some photos of it before dis-assembly started. Looked to me like they tried to remove the jaw inserts in the past but sheared off the attaching screws and just welded the darn inserts back on.
Just this past spring, I restored a smaller, 47 pound, Model 603-1/2 Sawyer Tool Company "Nutyp" dual swivel vise. I'm going to restore this larger one match the smaller unit.
To satisfy my own curiosity - has anyone in the forum ever come across or have pictures of the Model 605 Vise??:headscrat (The attached 1930 Oswego Tool Company Ad lists the 3 available sizes at that time.) Would be nice to obtain one at a reasonable cost for restoration. That would complete my "Set". Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I think you're cornering the market on NuTyps. Congratulations on managing to find two of a rather unusual model. I'm sure they made many thousands of them, but they don't seem to come up for sale very often.

If you find another 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 that you don't want to keep let me know:D. Also for your collection you'll need the 3" version and the bench clamp version. I tried to buy a clamp-on version from a guy in California a few months ago, but it didn't work out. A cool feature on the early versions of the NyTyp that you may have seen was a wire cutter built into the pipe jaws.

Wow, it's like the American predecessor to most of those off shore swivel jobs.

Old Dad: i'm not sure i would have even considered buying that old vise, so waiting to see what magic you have in store to show us a restored version. it does look like it once was an awesome vise.

Hello again everyone!!
Been working on de-rusting and restoring my Sawyer/Oswego NuTyp Vise Model 604-1/2.
I was able to have the old "welded-on" jaws machined off via a friend's Bridgeport Mill. New, smooth face jaw inserts were made to match the original sizes of the old, rear jaw, "welded-on-insert". (I was able to grind the welds off) Both front and rear vise faces were plug-welded, drilled and tapped to the same dimensions matching the old jaw hole centers.
Some before and after pictures are attached of the work in progress. I'll post more pictures soon of the restored assembly.:)

Very nice! One question though.. Why did you paint the slide. The paint will scrape up and bind yea?

Hello Dave!

I painted the slide on my 603-1/2 (Pictured above in earlier post) Must be lucky - no noticeable scratches or binding on this particular design. The internal nut and slide seem to hold it centered within a machined slot on the underside of the slide. Thanks for your concern.

Hello again everyone!! :hellobye:

Just had the time to complete the assembly of my restored Sawyer Tool Company, dual swivel, "Nutyp" Model 604-1/2 vice.
Assembly photos are attached. It's nice to have at least 2 models of such rare vises. I'm not too sure if a Model 605 was ever produced or they just added 5" width jaws to make it a "605 Model". :dunno: Any info on that would be appreciated. Now if I can just find that Fulton Bench Type Model to restore, that would be the "icing on the cake" for me. ;) Still searching E-Bay and local Craig's listings.:headscrat Any leads would be appreciated :)

Both vises have re-made custom jaws as close as I could get them from measuring the originals. The 604-1/2 I rescued had the jaws welded on by some butcher in the past. If you need a sketch of them, just private message me and I'll email the jaw sketch to you.

Good luck:thumbup:
