Anyone found a source of JIS bits? I have not been bought from vessel tools and am in no way affiliated with vessel tools.

Anyone know of a place that sells as low as this but ships USPS Priority?

Seem to be JIS...

http://www.vesseltools.com/
UPS Ground Shipping $12.35 seems to be the same for one set of three, one pack of ten or 4 packs of ten.

Price is good enough but the shipping...

I've been thinking of ordering a 10 pack of #1 and a ten pack of #2, not sure if the #0 and #3 are worthwhile for me.

Set of #0, #1 and #2.
A-16479 3pc Insert Bit Set $4.20

Individual bits are sold in ten packs.

I got my from Vessel Tools. Once you starting using JIS tools on JIS fasteners, you will wonder why you didn't buy them sooner.

What's that guy from Mexico on eBay that sells the Jananese stuff? Does he have any? I am interested in the best place, because I would like to pick up a few bits myself.

I asked a similar question in screwdriver thread recently, but nobody had much input on bits.

I went searching for the same thing just yesterday and found the same Vessel products as you did. I did not search eBay, but all other sites where I found the same vessel bits wanted exorbitant amounts of money for the 3-bit set you linked to.

Those Vessel bits don't say anything about being JIS.

They seem to mark their JIS screwdrivers very prominently, so I wonder if these bits are actually JIS.

Search ko-ken or koken and he will show up.

No. I just bought two Vessel JIS screwdrivers. Vessel does not make Phillips screwdrivers. ALL their cross point screwdrivers are JIS.

Then look here:

Note the "Fits JIS Screws" notation on all the cross pointed drivers.

This boutique store was selling the same set of 3 for $15 plus USPS Priority shipping. Apparently they only had 9 sets available and sold out in 1 day.

Don't know what a JIS screwdriver is? Go here and read. Pay no attention to the robot pix.

Cliff notes:
  • Designed to grip a screw instead of camming out when force is applied.
  • Made by Vessel, the company that helped create the JIS standard
  • Comes with what you see here. Three bits in P.0, P.1, and P.2 size
  • Not just for Miatas. This set should work on ANY Japanese car.

$15 + shipping. 9 sets available.
Buy from my store.

Compatible with both the old JIS standard and the new Japanese screws being made today.

Note the differences between the JIS and Phillips. They appear small but, when you're using a JIS bit, the differences are HUGE.

The JIS makes full contact with a Japanese screw and actally grips it rather than just sitting inside. This means you don't have to press incredibly hard to maintain contact and get a screw tight.

I thought I'd give a small update to this thread.

Radio silence so far on getting to be a Vessel dealer. I'm kinda surprised. No replies from any of the three possible places that I was told to contact.

Worse case: I can get more of the JIS bits and sell them for the same price.

Obviously the best solution would to buy the correct bits...but FWIW in a pinch from what I've read a few places grinding the tip down on a standard phillips bit will make for an acceptable fit in a JIS screw and not strip it.

Have done that in the past but I am looking for the correct bits.

IIRC the Vessel bits are said to fit both the old style JIS and the newer style currently used in Japan.

Totally agree. had a set on my amazon wishlist for 2 years before I finally got around to ordering them. Just got them a couple months ago and used for the first time on some 70's dirtbikes and all I can say is WOW. Should have bought these years ago. made disassembling the carbs almost fun...

Those bits will not fit a 1/4" hex drive screwdriver.

Only Vessel bits that fit a 1/4" hex drive screwdriver that I saw on eBay were the 125mm long ones. Those are about 5 inches long, probably fine in a impact driver but I'm interested in 1" (25.4mm) bits at this time.

1/4" Hex 125mm long set, 3 cross bits and 3 slot bits.

Hello.
Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry.
Yes, these bits are manufactured to JIS specifications.
Some of the product images need to be updated to show this, but you will not find any “Phillips” bits or screwdrivers on the website.

Best regards,

Just did some googling and found them here:
http://www.rjrcooltools.com/shop_item_detail.cfm?subcat_ID=89

That lead me to some more googling, and it appears that DIN 5260 bits fit JIS screws properly, and that is actually what we should be looking for.
Taking that down the next step, it appears (at least according to Amazon), that Wera makes DIN 5260 bits:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000297U8E/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Ok, this is a ridiculously expensive example (after shipping), but maybe we can find something better, by searching for the DIN spec?
