Hey everybody :)

I just got done with my review of the Proto ASD Ratcheting Spline Wrenches.

In the past I have used many different types of them (ratcheting wrenches) & I never really liked them because of a few key issues. The earliest varieties (and also the currently cheaper varieties) do not have directional change switches, which quickly becomes a nightmare to deal with if/when you get them stuck.....such as when loosening the bolt that holds your idler/tensioner pulley in place. What is supposed to be a 5 minute job, quickly turns into an hour because now you are stuck trying to free your tool. I consider many of the other ratcheting wrenches to simply be gimmicks that do not work & I rarely use them.

Another big issue with the "one-way" ratcheting wrenches, is the fact that they have a 0 degree offset (to accommodate the need to flip them to change direction) & you end up scraping your fingers/knuckles constantly while using them.

Proto did a great job in my opinion with these & they are extremely comfortable to use & I like them a lot. The directional switch is recessed, and wont catch on your fingers or things you are working near. They built in a 15 degree offset on the boxed end, so you can move your hands above the work surface while working. And, they have 72 teeth in the ratcheting mechanism that gives you a 5 degree swing arc.

They are 100% Made in the USA & have a full lifetime warranty.

Check out the video to see them for yourself!

:)

Nice! I might have to pick up some of these at work...we bastardize some Craftsmans to install some 12-point nuts and I'm guessing these will be much better.

Great review, thanks. They've been on my list for awhile.

Does anybody know if the very similar (non-ratcheting but with I-beam handles and the same angle on the open end) Mac Precision Torque are also USA made??????

i wonder how long till we see a matco version? haha...

seriously though, great review...i like how it seems that good ole Pro To is getting back into more automotive side of tools again...maybe we'll see a Proto truck in a couple years?

Woodstockva, another great review!

Really glad you showed the spline drive in action against a rounded bolt head. I believe many people think the spline drive is just a gimmick, but it really does work and as well or better than most 12 point "flank drives" I have used. Plus the added benefit of fitting 12 point, 4 point and Torx bolts.

I've been using this set daily at work since March and can not say enough good things about them.

As awesome as that would be Stanley will never do it. If Proto had a truck MAC would be out of business instantly. We can always dream though :(

hmm...think about it, though, both Mac and Proto are "legacy" brands...names that we grew up watching our fathers and grandfathers use...and now they've pretty much destroyed the reputation of mac by outsourcing most all of what they make...

so maybe they kill off Mac, and bring in Proto to replace it...badass tools made in Texas drove up to my shop for me to buy? hell yes i would love that...haha

That would be :rocker: But at the same time, you know if they did that they would have to add a ton of import rebadge tools to fill the line. I'm pretty happy with them as a hard line industrial supplier. They're good at that.

Been meaning to get a set of these in metric since they debuted. Hard to justify the price though when I'm not wrenching for a living, and I already have a set of flex-head gearwrench combos. One day...

Great work and a nice clean video with good audio. I hate to be a stickler but there was one small bit that bugged me. The cman wrenches when used on the rounded bolt are tightening the bolt as they slip off while the protos are twisting the bolt in the off direction. I would have liked them to be turning the bolt in the same direction in the comparison.

Now I'm just sayin cause I know this wouldn't have been allowed in the olympics or anything like that. :headshake

The videos just keep getting better...

I have a set that I put together from various suppliers 40% off sales. Great wrenches!!!

I do not understand why people fear spline drive. Yes, it can beat up a fastener if you use the wrong size wrench but, that's only because it grips really well. :dunno:

I don't use an open end often but, the antislip design coupled with the angle of the open end, makes for a very strong wrench with improved access. The thick beams are real comfortable too. Proto did well with these,

Someone asked about the MAC versions, The MACs are made in Taiwan and are a copy of a FACOM design. Very different from the PROTO wrenches.

Great review as always. They ordered a 3/4" for one of the guys at work a while back, I'll have to see how he likes it. I checked it out when it came in but was turned off by the spline drive. After seeing this review, you may have changed my outlook on them:thumbup: Now I feel the need to buy both metric and sae sets.
