Did a quick stop at my local Sears tonight and got extremely pissed off. They never have any stock of tools, nothing is ever organized, and the prices are never correct/current/posted, etc.

So the wife and I ride over to another Sears and I start digging around while she hits a maternity store. I look and don't find anything too impressive, until I get to where the table saws, drill presses, etc are located. I see a sign that is just laying there, on no particular product, that says "Originally $1,299, Clearance $***.**"

I look around and all I see is a ********* roll away box. So I start digging into it and it is LOADED. I spend the next 30 minutes googling my *** off to determine it is a General Mechanics Took Kit. It's full of wrenches, ratchets, and sockets in SAE and Metric made in the USA primarily from Craftsman, but also Armstrong and SK and a ton of other awesomeness. I take note that it is missing the Gerber multitiool and the multimeter from the top. So I go talk to the guy and ask him if that's the best he can do considering it's missing pieces. He asks the manager. She comes back and makes me an offer I can't refuse.

Best I can tell, it originally retailed for around $3,079, but went closeout for around $399. I am going to add a few items to the top and keep it as a travel kit. Loving this thing.

Even worse, they said it had been sitting there since May! And that for the majority of the time, the padlock was on it so no one could even open it and inspect it.

A year or so ago these went on closeout at Sears.com. It was never an item carried in store, so that one was likely a return.

I picked up two of them for about $300 each, kept what I wanted, sold some stuff, and about a month ago finally found a buyer for the cases.

Well, you'd need to be crazy to spend $3000 on that set, but equally crazy to leave it on the table at $175!
Well done. You ****.

A lot of the stuff in there kind of ***** (like those acetate CMan screwdrivers, the RP ratchets, and the Robogrips), but $175 is a hell of a deal. The case is the best thing out of the whole deal. Those are not cheap; I've always wanted one.

The way I figure, the US made wrenches (7-21mm and 5/16" to 1"), 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" ratchets, array of sockets, half moons, flare wrenches, and breaker bars alone are easily worth the $175. Add the case and everything else, and it is a steal. I may take some time tonight and see what else I have in duplicate lying around that may supplement or replace certain parts, but I am happy with what it is so far.

Did this have an NSN number? I know there are similar kits purchased by the government such as this, http://www.kippertool.com/media/pdf/military/GMTK_Flyers.pdf

Sears / Craftsman - item & Model numbers make things interesting at times.

Item # 9-C1010 Craftsman General Mechanics Tool Kit (GMTK)

You jelly? :lol_hitti
Like I said, I'm jealous of the case. It's awesome.

Am I jealous of his Robogrips, raised panels ratchets, or hard handled screwdrivers? God, no. If you look closely, you could spend a total of maybe $100 and get all of the tools in there at pawn shops. It's mostly basic CMan sockets, wrenches, pliers and the like. The case is the prize. Just because the thing started off at a silly price of $3000+ doesn't mean it's worth that.

I stand my my original statement. Awesome case, "meh" contents. In garage sale season, you can't drive three blocks without seeing someone selling a bucket of that stuff for pennies on the dollar.

:dunno:

I agree 100%, the case is the only thing to get excited about. Everything else in the kit wouldn't fetch $175 on this board in the classifieds.
