I just bought 2 Liftmaster 8500's for the 2 new doors being installed Friday, but I've always had only one door before, so one opener/keypad, etc.

With 2 openers, do you need 2 keypads (377LM) or can 1 be programmed to open either door? I read the manual and it isn't mentioned there.

Do you need 2 separate internet gateways or will 1 work for both openers?

Thanks!

Tom

I'm not sure about the keypads. Since they are hardwired to each door, I think you will have two.

You only need one internet gateway. It's super easy to set up. I have six doors with 8500's and they all show up.

You can use one remote. There are three buttons per remote.

The keypads are one-touch-to-close, so if both doors are open, and you hit enter, both will close. There's no way to only close one. And since there is a grace period where you can open the door several seconds after closing without using the passcode, it is possible to get the two doors running opposite directions. With both closed, you will be able to program a separate code for each, and open them individually. I recommend you use a keypad on only one door. I don't know about the gateways. I'll check sources.

Edit for Skeetobite: The 377LM is a wireless, outside mounted, numbered keypad, not the hardwired wall console.

Cool and thanks!

I will have 3 different buildings at 3 locations (home - 1 door, pole barn - 1 door, shop - 2 doors), all with the 8500's so was hoping that was the case.

A gateway can run six doors and a number of lights.
I'll confirm that.

One of my 8500 push button remotes went rogue and latched on to another. Never in sync. I had to throw it away. It just always randomly grabbed an additional door.

The wireless keypad will only work one door with the correct commands. Otherwise there would be an a/b switches somewhere to select a door. I have seperate keypads for each door and one gateway for all of them.
there is a droid app that runs the gateway.
That's kind of what I suspected, 2 keypads and 1 gateway at the shop for the 2 doors. Thanks much for confirmation.

Hope I didn't mis-speak on the key pads. The remote keypads for outside can store a different code for each door. I stored one for each door and then one to open all at once (which looks great when you're trying to show off).

The inside "button" keypads are hardwired, one for each door.

Then I have too many keypads.
I didn't know you could program them for more than one door.

The manual is on line. You might want to look up the keypads....

You shouldn't program them for more than one door. The aren't intended for this, and you will get some functionality problems by doing so. Besides, the external pad is to get into your garage without the use of a remote. Once you're in, you can walk up and open any of your other doors. Install the keypad on your most frequently used door.

Yes.
and the 'all open' function would require an 'all close' command. And the internet hub would go all freaky...or not.

I would have bought seperate remotes anyway for the reason you list.
I would need seperate codes for each door and would be sixty feet from the door I was try I g to open.

Here's the kit for each door:

Here's the keypad. I have 3 doors programmed and then a 4th code to open all 3 doors at once.

I just checked both the 8500 manual and the remote keypad manual. Neither say anything about keypads operating more than one door. You can program in temporary codes for vendors and visitors by either time or number of entries, but no multiple doors without a hack.
to be fair I do not have the standard keypads. I have the max version.

How do you program the keypad to accept more than one code for more than one door?

The keypad I ordered is 377LM and it doesn't say one way or the other in the manual about more than 1 door. When it arrives I guess I'll just try to teach it and see what happens.

It was pretty easy actually.

I set the opener for door 1 to "Learn" then for door one I made up a code and pressed open for 3 seconds. Released and pressed open again.

Repeat for each door.

So, I want to take the Suburban out, I approach the keypad, enter "golf1" and hit open. Door 1 opens.

I want to get the golf cart out so I enter "golf2" then enter and the proper door opens.

I want to take the SHO out, so I input "golf3" and the proper door opens.

I think it took all of 5 minutes to program. If I'm across the yard, I just use my phone and the door is open when I get there. It works, I promise :) I use it this way on 6 doors. Three on each side of the house.

To be honest, once I had the PIN stored for the keypad, I ignored the instructions because all of the learn features are the same for most modern garage door openers. I used the exact same process for the six garage doors that still use Genie openers and can open any door I want. So, with 12 doors, I have 12 codes. Two of the garages have an "open all" code stored.

Here's how I did an "open all" code:

Set door 1 to "learn". Keyed in "4321" and pressed the open key for 3 seconds. Released and pressed again. Door 1 moved.

Set door 2 to "learn". Keyed in "4321" and pressed the open key for 3 seconds. Released and pressed again. Doors 1 & 2 moved.

Set door 3 to "learn". Keyed in "4321" and pressed the open key for 3 seconds. Released and pressed again. Doors 1, 2 & 3 moved.

Obviously all three doors were now doing something different. I used the wired button to close all of them and then tested the code "4321". All three doors opened.

There is an unpublished limit on the number of remotes your opener can learn. So far I'm doing good with 5 each. Three car remotes, the keypad codes and the open all codes. I never tried more than 3 with the Genie models though and one of those would only accept 1 remote so I junked it.

Just program a separate code for each door, mine are a digit off and it works fine. Just program one door with one code, the second door with the other. Both doors will close with the auto close feature (one button down thing).
