Dammit dammit dammit! I'm broke, and will be for a while. And it's my own damn fault, too.
The first time these came up, I sucked it up and said "oh well. Maybe later." But this is the third time!!! And I've wanted one for years! Man I'm paying for being a slack *** last month... :Violent:

Hope this isn't blasphemy, but how does this box compare to the boxes sold at Costco? I'm in the market for a 40"-ish wide box and have just started looking. This box will be for home use, not professional.

Thanks in advance,

I must first say, each person has to get the box they like and can afford--there are no wrong answers.

I purchased the aforementioned Craftsman box and was a little disappointed. Of course, it could have been because it was slightly damaged. One of the drawers was crooked (probably could have realigned it). The "grip latch" system was the thing I was most hesitant about. I had shopped my local Sears outlet/parts store and had seen several boxes with broken latches.

I returned the Craftsman unit and started shopping at Lowes, HD, Sam's Club and Costco.

The unit I settled on was the CSPS 41" black matte finish.
There are things I do not like about this configuration-such as the full width drawers on the bottom cabinet-no split drawers. The sides of the drawers seem flimsy and the rails are held in place by rivets. Not sure how the latch system on the CSPS unit will hold up.

The finish is fine and I do like the pull out shelf on the CSPS unit as well as the included lightweight drawer liners.

However, for the money it will be fine for my handyman projects. The price for the Craftsman was $699 and the price for the CSPS at Costco was $499.

I am certain others will chime in. The Craftsman probably is a little better built than the CSPS.

I really liked the 56" Torin box at Costco for $699 although they are a rare find. Unfortunately it was too large for my space. It has been mentioned that the Torin is just a rebadged CSPS box.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions just shoot me an email or PM.

You'd probably be best to go touch both of them yourself. I like my Griplatch, very good for the money. The latches themselves are easily adjustable from a large amount of locking (I assume for rolling around on a rough floor without popping open) to very fine, with a minimal amount of lift on the handle to open the drawer (which is what I use since the box is stationary).

Could somebody post the dimensions of the drawers, I looked at the Sears web site and could not find that info. The depth is the issue, I want to know if the Hansen 1/2 socket racks will fit. Thanks.

New here and kinda wished I hadn't found this site. It may make me more of a toll addict than I already am. Any way I have a dumb question or two.

How do you find out about the sales ahead of time?

Maybe my math is off, but isn't 50% of $850 about $425 not $450?

I may grab one of these instead of building the mobile bench/cart I had planned. Yes besides being busy, I'm lazy.

Good call, I am going on the prices that were posted in the previous sale; the ad doesn't break down the prices of the two units by themselves but only says "50% off Sale $699.98". I would assume you are correct! Technically, 50% off would be: the bottom at $414.99 and the top at $274.99! I am assuming the pricing will be like the last sale, YMMV! We will have to check the site on the sale date to know for sure. I just "happened" to see the sales flyer ahead of time; don't tell anybody! :) Just keep in mind it is 50% off and I consider it to be one of the better deals out there, IMHO; frankly, 50% off anything of a true retail price is definitely something to consider; quality on the other hand is a whole 'nother issue... If quality is a high priority or primary concern for you and you don't mind a used box; I recommend a used Snap-On, Mac or Matco box. They're quality is so much better then these light duty Waterloo/Craftsman boxes; the difference is astounding! You might have to spend a little more or with the economy issues as of late; you might stumble on a really good deal! Caveat emptor on all and any deals you find out there; like most things in life: "you get what you pay for" but you might just get lucky and find a steal on a pro box on craigslist, too! :) Maybe a chat with local friendly auto tech might be a good idea or check out your local pro tool truck for some info and real world experience with a high quality tool box.

I have this unit - and just got some 1/2" Hansen socket racks at Sears on sale this week. Just went out and checked and the Hansen rack will fit in the top drawer of the base unit. Also in the lowest drawer but doubt you would want them down there.

The top left (wider) drawer on the base cabinet measures 4" from the inside bottom of the drawer to the top of drawer face. The measurement from inside bottom of the drawer to the side is 3.5". The 1/2 Hansen rack is just a smudge over 3.5" high. SO it fits. Put it in there and no problem.

If you get this at this blazing deal, I'd consider eventually getting the middle single full-length drawer that they sell also - not on sale now but sometimes you can get it cheaper (regular $279 - got mine for $199). The full length deep drawer is really perfect for sockets as I found the side drawer only on the base unit not quote big enough for all. The full length drawer is the same size (depth) as the top left drawer on the base cabinet I measured above - it just goes the full width of the cabinet.

Let me find a pic and post it for you.

Califon huh? I am in Chester.

Here is a pic - the drawer I am talking about is the one between the base cabinet and the top cabinet.

I have Craftsman 26" and 40" rollaways that I bought 20 years ago. Red with black draws. I would like to buy this black 40" combo if I can find the room.

On my 2 sets the widest drawers are 23" wide. For my longer tools like torque wrenches and breaker bars I have to put them on an angle to fit in the 23" wide drawers. Sears sells a version where the top and bottom units each have a single full width draw, but it cost much more than $699.

For the black $699 combo on sale I thought of an intermediate chest like in the picture above with a single full width drawer. My local Sears has this 3 unit setup on display. Problem is it is a bit too tall for me with the intermediate unit.

I need to be taller and find more room in my garage.

What's the quality like of the 20 year old C-Man boxes compared to what you've seen recently at Sears? A noticeable difference?

When I play with the display units the drawers seem flimsy, but that is probably because they are empty. I do not like how the inside of the lid was changed. On my old units there are rods inside the lid to hold stuff like charts. The top and bottom units of the 26" do not have plastic Craftsman logos, but metal plates with rivets. I do not like how the handle on the 40" unit to move it has changed.

No ball bearings or griplatch back then either. I like the ball bearings but the jury is out on the griplatch.

Billymade,

The last post you made was classic and truly professional. I understand from reading the previous posts, you must be very knowledgeable about Craftsman products. Thanks for consistently giving honest and reliable opinions.

No, problem! I try to give a balanced view of things; Craftsman is not the end all and be all of tools. I have worked in a pro production environment: so, I have experienced, used and owned professional tools! :) Everyones needs are different; I try to give people a heads up on the deals at Sears (I work @ Sears); IMHO, this box is a good deal but I do not considor it professional grade. Not everyone needs that level of a box either! Personally, I wish I had a KRL Snap-On box but unfortunately, do not have the cash for one! We can all dream can't we? :).... let me know if you have any other questions... :)

+1 on Brad's comments. Thanks for the honest evaluation. Wish I could find someone in the local Sears that even knew what a tool box was.

I did look at this box there a couple weeks ago. While I agree that is not top quality by any means, I think it will fit what I need. Most of the stuff that I will put in the drawers is lighter things, unless I decide to swap it with my older box with out ball bearing drawers that most of my tools are in. The one that serves as my "work bench" that I'm too lazy to build will get the most use though.

Thanks to all who make this site a great source of info.

thanks for the heads up!

Question to all:

If I am sure I want this box, what's the best way to ensure I get one... I checked availability on Sears.com and only 1 store has one in stock today. What would your plan be to ensure you dont miss out on this?

thanks!!

You could special order it at the store; at the register. The day of the sale they could then credit you back the difference or just wait and buy/order it on the day of the sale. Purchasing or ordering it now would get it to you faster; it all depends on how patient or willing you are in dealing with the crediting process or paying the higher price now, rather then the sale price later and waiting to get the box later, as well... YMMV!

I would buy it on the day of the sale and when it showed up at the store inspect it to make sure that it is good shape. That way has the least chance for mistakes or errors. I had ordered an 80 gallon air compressor and when it showed up it looked like it had tipped over in shipping. They offered to order the parts I asked for them to order a whole new compressor and it wasn't a problem. It just took a couple extra weeks.

cool... so it sounds like I can order it the day of the sale even if they are out of them? So I dont need to worry about finding a Sears that has inventory?

Re: "hell of a sale" Craftsman 40" combo set 50% AGAIN! 3RD TIME! 12/17-12/19

Correct, you can special order them at any time; the eta maybe longer the day of the day of the sale but yes, stock status doesn't matter in general. Occasionally, they won't let you order things at the register that are "closeout" status; these are easily recognized by the .88 at the end of the price. AFAIK, these are "regular" status in the Sears system and thus can be ordered; shipped to the store and picked up by the customer (this eliminates the added freight charges that would be entailed if you shipped it to your house). You shouldn't worry about getting the deal but having it in stock at the store in your area, is a "nother issue. Good call on checking the box BEFORE, you leave the store; these are light duty boxes compared to pro boxes and some are getting "tweaked" in shipment, YMMV, Caveat emptor and all those sayings.... Good luck! You will be able to get one; its all about a matter of when. One the day of the sale; you can go online add it to cart and check the "store pickup" option and it will show the stores in your area and the stock status of each store, I would call ahead to confirm before you go, it may save you a trip! You can also purchase over the phone with your Sears card...ask to be transferred to the hardware dept; this may also be a good idea as they will confirm they have the item in stock; ask for a "visual" meaning, actually go in the warehouse to confirm it is actually there, compared to what the register say.... it isn't always correct, especially on sale items! I hope this rambling helps (its all clear as mud, right?); if you have any other questions.... feel free to ask...

How much did you pay? I would rather have a pro box, especially at Snapon any day of the week.... even the lower line ones... :) Congrats! Does the sticker on the back, say made in Canada?

You can look at the new ad here: http://sears.shoplocal.com/sears/default.aspx?action=entryflash&

Quoting from the ad it says: Craftsman 22-drawer ball-bearing combo 59623/4 $699.98 "in store only"
Thats interesting, I didn't notice that before! If you have a Sears card you can order over the phone by calling your local store; otherwise, it looks like you need to go to your local sears to purchase this deal...

Thanks missed that before. Funny part is if you click on the ad it gives you the option to purchase online. When you click it it shows regular price. Sears is up to their same old BS.

Going to run by Sears maybe tomorrow after work to actually look at them in person so I can see what I'm getting.

There is also interest free financing if you want to snag the box now. It is over the 199.99 they want you to spend.

Could work out to $15 or so a week for a year.

I rung both up on the register @ work; the top part # 59623 is coming up @ $249.99 (55% off) and the bottom part # 59624 is coming up @ $449.99 (47% off); ymmv but this is what it rung up at my store... :) Both of these prices are reflected online as well... I guess this means you can buy them online and you do not have to buy them together; both discounted prices rung up seperately, as well....

My dad bought the same box when it was on sale a while back and both the upper and lower parts fit in the Expedition.

I pulled the trigger and ordered it. Then upper was in stock lower is back ordered for 7-10days. Will pick up the top tomorrow.

Thanks to billymade for the heads up and the followup on online prices.

Now hopefully it will not be damaged.
