This tool had me going for a long time but after a long search I found out what it was used for; putting on Calks (cleats) on horseshoes making it easier for the horse to walk in the ice and snow.

Made by the neverslip manufacturing Co. New Brunswick NJ. Inventors James W. Johnson & Richard Whitaker Aug. 17th 1897.

Trust me when I say that after a few days of looking at Newspapers from the 1880's up to World War l my eyes are done in for; I was able to read about a company picnic and I found a ad for the product but nothing more about the company in the New Brunswick NJ Newspapers.

Maybe if we have any GJ members living in that area they might know more about the history, with two daily papers I just did know which to pick.

When my dad and mom were first married, he had a job as a substitute mail carrier in rural WVa during the Great Depression. He usually had to go out when the weather was bad and even had to rent the horse he rode from the regular carrier. One time, on a steep and icy hill, the horse fell down, but they were neither one injured. I think they both would have liked to have the special caulks for icy conditions!

Anyone know the meaning of the symbol/code "triangle + 5.6.7.8" next to "Neverslip" on my calk wrench ?

Had a friend that worked on a feedlot operation in Nebraska and all of his horses wore caulked shoes in the winter for traction on the concrete feedlots.
