I know they make their own thermostats for these heaters but can you use a generic one just as well? I just got my 50k BTU this week and want to get it running as soon as possible. thanks

Any thermostat for a gas heater will work, Don't get one for electric baseboard heaters.

A heat only thermostat will work but you can only turn it down to the lowest setting and can't turn it right off unless you get a thermostat for heat and cool. I used a heat/cool thermostat I had so I can turn the furnace off incase I have the door open in winter. I was also able to wire it up to run just the fan which I may use in summer.

I plan on getting this thermostat for my big maxx. Honeywell CT50K1028/E
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002Z7EBCE/?tag=atomicindus08-20

The big maxx branded one works too but I like being able to turn it off at the thermostat if I choose and not loose the temp setting I placed. Much better reviews on the honeywell too. I like the ability to have the thermostat set as low as 35 instead of 50 like most only go to.

Where'd you buy your 50k big maxx? I'm about to buy mine from northern tool.

The Beacon Morris manual warns you to not operate the units at settings below 50 degrees, as acidic water can condense in the tubes and corrode them.

You're right. Never heard of this before but I'm glad you mentioned it to me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unit heaters should not be installed to maintain low
temperatures and/or freeze protection of buildings.
A minimum of 50°F (10°C) thermostat setting must
be maintained. If unit heaters are operated to maintain
lower than 50°F (10°C), hot flue gases are cooled
inside the heat exchanger to a point where water
vapor (a fl ue gas by-product) condenses onto the heat
exchanger walls. The result is a mildly corrosive acid that
prematurely corrodes the aluminized heat exchanger and
can actually drip water down from the unit heater onto
fl oor surface. Additional unit heaters should be installed
if a minimum 50°F (10°C) thermostat setting cannot be
maintained.

Is this true with all of the gas unit heaters? Pretty much a deal breaker for me - I'm not running a heater at 50 deg 24/7 for use periodically throughout the winter. I've got an electric currently and may have to stick with that!

I'm waiting to hear about it too. I'm not sure I want to have garage set at 50 24/7 either!

FYI A new heat exchanger(assuming that's the only part to go bad) is $80 shipped for the 50k big maxx. So likely not something worth worrying about.

Thanks. I ordered mine through Menard's website and picked it up at my local store. Lowe's had a better price but none of their warehouses in the Midwest had it. (??) Looks like Northern Tool has the best price.

I used this one on my Bigmaxx. Has a low set point. 3 years and going strong.

Good point, Bass -- that would make it a non-issue.

I wish I would have found this thread a couple weeks ago. I bought the round Honeywell heat-only for my big maxx install this weekend. I wrongly assumed it would turn 'OFF' when I dialed all the way down. It does not. So now I pop the face off when I'm done out there. Then the fan can blow till the heat exchanger cools. But it cannot call for heat.

I wanted a t-stat that also had a thermometer display for the current temp. Many heat-only do not have that.

I'll pick up a heat-off-cool version and chalk it up to experience.

This is a heat only thermostat and does also have a thermometer above the temp setting. I've been using this one now for a month or so and it's been working great. Has the off switch on thermostat too.

I just installed one of these Honeywells to use with my 45k Beacon Morris. It displays the current temp and the setpoint can go as low as 40 deg F.

Have you set it below 50 since the manual says not to? I got the same heater and hope to get it hung this Friday. I see my local menards has one of these thermostats. I would like an off switch. Can it shut it off?

So why are you all changing the T-stat that comes with the Big Maxx? mine works perfect and I have no issues with it at all.

I do have a separate thermometer in there for a digital temp readout as that one is not the best on there. That was only $5 though

Some big maxx heaters don't come with a thermostat anymore. If mine came with the mr heater one I'd have used that and saved $26.

Sorry, didn't see your question earlier.

I have set it to 45 several times and haven't seen any ill-effects from it yet, however I usually keep it set at 50 and bump it up a few degrees when I'm out there working. This thermostat is capable of heat-off-cool settings along with fan on-auto selection.
