So much for a "simple" Briggs & Strat carb overhaul

I bought this tiller 30 plus years ago and it was old then. It is a J.C Penny brand, well used and very weathered. According to the date stamp it was built 10/1974. Never given me a bit of trouble until this year when the float developed a leak. Simple fix until I gave the carb a nice coat of black paint. That shiny "new" carb just didn't look right against the old worn, dirty and weathered brown paint so I decided to clean it up a bit. (it was too rainy and windy to till the garden anyway.)
Now I don't know if I can bring myself to get it dirty!

I appreciate your efforts, and outcome...looks great!

Some years ago my friend wanted to borrow my Tiller ( Montgomery Wards ). I told him sure, I"ll help you load it up on one condition..that I never see it again.
Away he went and I never seen it again..he is around all the time but that devil machine has never been spoken about since.

Careful with that color scheme - I smell lawsuit!

Now, you need a set of Penncraft wrenches to work on it.

I just happen to have a set of Penncraft sockets. I bought them back in the early 70's and still have them. They aren't too bad, but I seldom use them. I have a lot of the old Craftsman tools that I bought many years ago and they are still going strong.

Monkey Wards tillers were made by Gilson (I have one). Gilson was bought by Lawn Boy who was bought by Toro. Some parts are still available.

After my carb rebuild, I did paint it and the tank. Not inspired enough to paint the rest. I still use it several times a year.

I can't tell exactly what B&S engine is on it, but the old 5hp vertical shaft engine can easily be upgraded to electronic ignition with a Briggs & Stratton conversion kit, #394970. You can buy these on eBay for about $20. Best thing I ever did.
