When is a Block grinder NOT a Block grinder?

I think some would agree, that I have a knack (Mrs. Torqueman says an obsession) for finding CM Block motor grinders. See my sig, line for more information on what is a CM Block motor grinder.

Well, I spotted such a grinder on CL. The description said make, model, and HP information was not known. The seller verified that it did start and run, and it had been taking up space for some time after he brought it home from work.

There was 1 single, crummy picture, and the price was $25.

It looked like the first CM Block grinder I restored.

Granted the crummy grinder was missing parts: eye shields, spark arresters, and tool rests. But, I was planning on 'parting it out'.

I bought it, brought it home and started checking it out.

Field windings like CM, side castings like CM; but sw, relay, and wiring are different.

I removed black (100 MPH*) tape and uncovered the label.

Black and Decker !?!!?? :shocking:

I've been spoofed, hoodwinked, fooled, by a Block wannabe/poser! :willy_nil

But wait.
What is that other yellow box connected after the E-Stop Button?

It's a Sensing-Saf-Start Model 1997 module. "Anti-automatic restart protection device, a mandatory OSHA safety requirement. Provides protection against unexpected start-up, motion, and motor burn-out after a power interruption and subsequent restoration."

$197.02 + $7.38 shipping Amazon :D

Anyone want a 1/2 HP Heavy Duty 6/7" B&D grinder?
:D

*We call the 3 & 4" wide HD black tape '100 MPH' tape, because it holds exterior wires, instrumentation, ... to the vehicle at 100 MPH. ;)

TM: you sure know how to start a thread. nice write up and pictures and you'll have to post what you end up doing with that expensive part you found attached to this grinder.

keep up the good work and even though you might have been fooled at first i think you knew what you were doing in the end.

Sad thing is Black and Decker grinders used to be one of the top makers before they made the stuff made out of plastic that looks more like toys.

At least it's not plastic :lol_hitti Good find on the Saf-start and I'm sure you'll find a use for that e-stop button! For the price, you did well and can probably recoup your money on the bare grinder.

Is it likely they were both from the same manufacturer?

I've seen Foley Belsaw grinders which seemed identical to those with Craftsman labels.

That's my thought also. There are some casting differences I've noticed after a quick review of a couple of real Block pics. But overall look/design is Blockish.

I've noticed the BelSaw Block grinders too. Brothers, cousins?

I decided to strip this B & D grinder for parts, as it's not worth the trouble to sell it on CL and there are enough parts I can find a use for.

I thought someone would like to see how these B & D non-Block, Blocks are put together.

Maybe the power switch can be used on a Block.

that is pretty interesting first i ever seen
Thanks Ted.

It was the last thing I did yesterday.

So no time to see if that band can be used for the sad 1HP, here's hoping.

The frame looks like a CM Block, but there are differences inside and out, so into the recycle bin it went.

Overall, the 'feel' is less substantial than a CM Block. Next Block of similar HP I have on the bench, I'll do a side-by-side compare.

My initial impression of the rotor is smaller and lighter, like the windings. And how about the over-temp discoloration on the white electrical terminal bar!?

Any suggestion on what else to use the rotor and windings for after the side-by? :headscrat
