In-Floor Lighting

I was at the bookstore yesterday and saw a garage with some in-floor lighting under the lift, which I thought was kind of cool.

Anyone out there with in-floor (in concrete) lighting that's drive-on?

The fixtures are about $360 each for the stainless steel, and $330 for the bronze. I haven't actually purchased them yet, to save some cash. So before I poured the floor, I bought the mounting canisters and installed them. When I'm done with the garage, hopefully I'll have enough money for the fixtures. If not, at least the canisters are in place for when I get the money. A couple of pictures: before the pour showing canisters and hoist layout, and after the pour.

I forgot to mention that there is conduit underground that connects all of the canisters together.

Wow that is a great looking job, Cost on lights is crazy expensive. I was thinking for around $200 for four lights. Found this so far.

That is pretty interesting, but if this is for a lift what kind of shadow will this produce?

Diesel-I won't know about shadows until I get the lights installed, but I'm actually hoping with added light, there would be less shadows.
Matt-I can't tell you for sure about the foam board. It was supplied by the same guy who poured the footings and the floor. I got a total bill, but it wasn't itemized. It was also my son-in-law's boss, so I got his price on the materials. I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Lowe's and HD for around $33 per 2" sheet.

I've drooled over those as well.

Unfortunately, I would not install the ones 72VETTE454 is looking at... sorry... I don't like MR lamps in this type of application. They are meant more for accent lighting (decorative) rather than functional illumination (lighting a work space). A PAR lamp does a better job at the latter. Even more so for those cheap LED fixtures - which are really meant for accent lighting. IMHO, those would be a big waste of time and money.

I agree that shadows could be an issue... not to mention glare (which has always been an issue for MR lamps)... for the above fixture, I would use a CFL flood lamp with an opaque coating/diffuser.

I have big hopes and plans for LED lighting... but at this time, they're just not ready.

I looked at lights similar to those, but the biggest problem I had with those is they are too big for me. Those particular ones are 10" in diameter. I was basically looking for the smallest fixture with what I thought was a decent amount of light.

I guess I'd rather have the bigger fixture. It's much easier to make a bigger fixture "act" small than the other way around.

I cant help but bump this old thread, Anyone else have any input on in floor lighting ?

are lights out there that can be used that dont cost $2-300 , walkway lights maybe ?

What about installing some glass blocks in the floor with a socket for a bulb underneith? Either design the glass block to lift out (supported on a ledge of concrete or some angle iron) or else put a a flush 4" or 6" threaded cleanout plug next to the glass block to be able to access the blub.

I'm sure with some clever engineering someone can come up with a way to do in-floor lights for a lot less $$$ than the comercial fixtures!
