Saw today that I can pick up a Torin T32001 2 Ton Big Red Engine Hoist for $143.20 plus tax IN STOCK !!

Is this a Good Lift, and worth the money ?? Only going to use it with my 1929 Restoration, and maybe a few other things. Like that it folds up and can push it in a corner when not needed.

Was also looking at the one From Harbor Freight #60388 (Pittsburg) for $172.49 also a 2 Ton Folder.

Figure the average 2 Ton Hoist Runs about $250 or so !!

I bought one of these about 8-10 years ago. I've only used it a few times, but it did everything I asked of it. Mine seems to be pretty decent quality, but some more recent reviews point out some pretty sloppy welds...

If you get one (or any engine hoist) I'd suggest adding a load leveler. I also replaced the pins that lock the legs in place with hitch pins (with a handle) from HF - makes inserting/removing them much easier.

Yeah Heard of the CRAPPY Welds on some of them... Have not heard of any failing though due to that though, granted I do NOT want to be the TEST SUBJECT !:

Like the Hitch Pin Idea, Quicker/ Easier to use... Plus can us a 20% Coupon on those as well.

It will be a light duty load that I use the Hoist for. think Motor Comes in around 480 lb then transmission & flywheel goodies add about another 200 or so. Worse Case would be 1000 lb for the 1929 Drivtrain !!

I've had that same torin hoist for 5 years or so now, no issues with it, looks identical to the harbor freight one except for the color. I think it was about $150 when I got it, so sounds like you found a good deal. My dad has the same one and has used it on tractor engines and everything imaginable around the farm.

Who knows?
If you don't mind me asking, where are you finding the hoist at that price?

My Google-Fu seems to be off today.

I bought that same hoist from Canadian Tire a few years ago, it works well, and has no problem doing everything that I've asked it to do. Full dress iron small blocks with transmission, truck bed, compressors, rear ends...

I have one. But I got it for free :willy_nil I think its great. I've lifted some heavy stuff with it. Mine's real sturdy. For $150, I would get it. You will use it for things that you would have never even thought were possible before you got a hoist. It folds, but its not very small. When you drop the arm all the way down, and retract it all the way, It still sticks out maybe 6-8" from the base. The legs fold up nicely. I have seen guys take everything completely apart for storage, but I don't bother.

I would be curious if the Torin has the same steel in the boom as the HF. Its one of the features that make it so good, heavy tube.
One of the fails we saw was in a Pep Boys model, the 1K unit, poorly designed and light. The 2T may be different?

Well picked up my Torin today, Think it weighs 186 lb per box, and YES it is heavy !!

When I take it out I will post up picts and assembly info. Also will measure out the Tubes and wall thickness of them.

Also this is the Torin Hoist (Big Red) that is sold by Tractor Supply Company $229, Northern Tool $299 w/ Leveler, Advance Auto $229 Plus if any have them on sale, Price may be lower.

Total was $151.79 Out the Door !!
box it came in look great and not all beat up, so HOPING contents are in Great Shape as well

928'er had a great idea on using the hitch pins for the legs.

Could you use them in the Boom Arm for Length Adjustment ?? What about the Top of the Ram or the Boom Arm. SO you could remove the boom arm for storage (Make it more compact)

Consider the pins would be in shear, figure they should be ok.

Sorry for bumping old post, how are you guys doing with this engine hoist.. ?

I just picked up this torin from pepboys, comes in slightly cheaper than HF even with their engine hoist coupon.

HF 128 lbs
Torin Big Red 186 lbs.

How is this possible to have this much difference in between the 2?

However when I picked up the Torin, yes I believe it is quite a bit more than 128 lbs. I was almost not able to lift it into the trunk with 2 people. And I had to take the pieces out of the car when I got home, so it does feel more like 182 lbs. Maybe the HF comes in 2 boxes and they are only listing one of the boxes.

The finish and welds seems quite adequate to me, the tubing thickness is over 1/8" for sure.

Pulling the trigger for this on Monday. I hope it gets shipped in one piece and I'm happy with the welds

If it's heavier then it's probably better. I am not sure where the rumor about the welding came from but my bud has a HF and the welding is flawless especially compared to a couple OTC I have seen and the one I have. It seems the boom was 3/16 or 1/4 in his.
We saw a 1T from Pep that failed and It was a design problem, one of the pieces was located wrong as I recall.
I think mine is OTC but is quite a bit heavier. I know a couple with the HF folders and they do everything they need.

I have the Torin 2 ton folding hoist as well. I bought mine 8-9 years ago from Pep boys. I pulled/installed the engine in my Camaro. I also used it a few times to pick up my old original engine when I moved it to different storage spots. I had zero issues with the hoist itself, but the one thing I don't like is that is that it is a few inches too short to pull the engine from the front of my Camaro. I had to go over the fender which made installing the engine with the trans attached a pita. I installed the engine/trans using a load leveler, so I had to lower/raise the car as I went along. I didn't have the same issue removing the engine because I already removed the trans removed and I used a carb plate to pull the engine.
