Thanks, Snapmom. Guessing it should be 6 volt and another wire hooked the positive term. of the battery? I just got this on ebay-had to have it!! Now wife knows i'm crazy, as I no longer engrave tools.

It can work with 6 or 12, but you have to have the piece you are engraving, grounded. so you may need another wire with clips.

I have a Mac version that is only a couple years old. They are in the current catalogs. Mine came with a 2' aligator lead to connect the ground.

I have one from my Dads stuff.
I would guess the 50's as well.
Works on either 6 or 12 volt.
He always used a second wire with clips to ground the tool.
I cannot recall that I have ever used it.

GA - 39 Etching pencil

From Snap-on Catalog "U" issued March 1953, page 65:

Personalize your equipment and cut down loss by etching your name and other identification marking on your tools. You can do it quickly and easily with this etching pencil. Simply connect the alligator clip to the negative post of a battery and lay the tool to be marked on the positive post, or if the battery is in the car lay the tool on some metal part of the car and connect clip to ungrounded post. Touching the point of the pencil to the tool will cause the needle to vibrate and etch the metal as you guide the pencil.

$3.60 August 30, 1954 price list, page 4

I like how the instructions state the it will get warm during use and that when it gets to warm to hang onto just stop and let it cool off for a bit. :lol_hitti

Those type of instructions would never fly in today's market. Funny how things change.

I know this is a very old thread. I've been looking for one of these for years now with no luck. I missed one on ebay last year, still kicking myself for that. Any idea where you could get one?
Thanks
Scott

I have one I bought in the 70's.... It does a fairly good job but I never used it to much because it gets verrry HOT pretty quickly....
