ALL: I have always liked big tools. maybe because i sat on my Gramps lap on his Cat D9 when i was 6 while he was cutting in logging roads here in the Pacific Northwest. I remember seeing wrenches over 4 foot long, sockets as big as your foot and vises like some of the guys here own being used daily.

anybody else have some huge tools to show off please do. Keep it clean boys (and girls) and let's have some fun with this. all of you with those 100 plus pound vises please post them here if you would. don't be shy about posting pictures because at GJ we all like lots of them.

I picked up this Starrett the other day and not sure if i'll ever use it, but i knew i needed to buy it. by the way for those of you that know what the tools were used for please post and comment and or post pictures of the tools in use. i also posted a couple pictures of a Cat D9 in case some of you want to see what it is and how big it really is.

Got Any Big Tools????

While we are waiting for more impressively sized tools here is my meager collection. Which I do use on occasion.

Picture one is large wrenches, ratcheting wrenches, Channellocks, 24" adjustable etc. Not pictured, I have the Craftsman USA 5 piece extra large expansion set in both SAE and metric.

Picture two is my 3/4" drive socket assortment, there are some size repeats because I got three partial sets that I combined. They are USA Kobalt, Proto, and Canada Grey. Not pictured are some 3/4 breaker bars. And cheater pipes :pimpflash

Pictures of what you guys work on with your large tools would be interesting too

Southern: agreed pictures or links to YouTube videos of guys (and gals) using some of these huge tools would be great.

All: here's my one inch Plvmb ratchet with a proto rebuild set installed on it. i'm looking for some one inch Plvmb or Proto sockets for this to use on my big vises in case anybody has some sitting in a garage or barn getting rusty and dusty. for scale on this Plvmb ratchet the rubber squares are 12 x 12 inches.

Wrench: i think you are just getting started and i for one really like your big tools. keep posting as you wish and i'll just sit back to watch and enjoy. maybe post that sparks video with your big grinder and power source?

BJ: nice wrench

Zx: another nice wrench (es)

Southern: awesome looking tool drawer

All: here's my biggest vise as of today and working on building a stand to use it correctly. it's a Reed 4C combination vise that has 6 inch jaws and weighs a mere 192 pounds. as you see it's in good company on my shelf that can hold a few pounds.

Last time I added it up there is something in the neighborhood of 300,000 lbs of tools and equipment here on the farm. The heaviest is a Cat D8H with a single shank ripper and a pin on root rake (95,000 lbs). Also my brothers favorite piece... (Evil grin) a 12 yard paddle wheel scraper, motor graders, multiple tractors, backhoe, skid steer loader and around 40,000 lbs of woodworking equipment. Three sawmills, two dump trucks, the list goes on.... The single heaviest non moveable piece if equipment is the 48hp 25" jointer planer at 8,000 lbs. sorry no pix right now - I'm on Tapatalk but maybe later.

I already have lots of pix; they are just not accessible from my iPad. I'm waiting for my brother JP Smith to chime in to express his love for the scraper....

I've been meaning to start a thread like this. I have a few big tools that I don't need but couldn't pass up. Don't have any pics handy though.

didn't take pictures, but used to have to throw a 5 1/2" socket onto a 3/4 impact to tighten down nuts on 200-250hp electric motors. those impacts are unwieldy and big, but feel underpowered when driving a nut that big..

Our shop has a set of S-K wrenches. Up to this 2-1/2 incher. They come in handy for weight / frame / track nuts on all kinds of heavy equipment...

A fun topic. I need to post these modest items before the really big stuff rolls in.

Top to Bottom:

A Jet 2" combination wrench (made in Japan)

Craftsman Box End

Diamond Caulk 24" adjustable (has saved me on a couple of occasions)

Proto C Clamp (I have two of them)

IMG_0356 (Small).JPG

I can't wait to see this thread grow.

A friend here in town is interested in saw blades and has a pretty good selection.
I've given him some antique saws and blades from my Michigan farm when I sold it and thought this one would be funny.

I'm going to build a wooden handle and attach it so it looks like a carpenters saw. The blade is 1/4 inch plate 16" tall at the mounting point and 67" long where it fractured.

Missing the chain, but I think you get the size... Someone just threw it in the dumpster. I had no need for it so I gave it to my friend that repairs our forklifts, which in turn I think he gave it to a guy that repairs hydraulic cylinders for him... lol.

I get the feeling that wrenchguy's collection is going to leave us all feeling inadequate.

Here's my meager offering.

- 2 Billings wrenches. A #47 and a #50 (the bottom one is being restored to match the top one)
- a 25" circular saw blade
- an 8"x8'-4" piece of bandsaw blade from a pine mill near my house in maine
(I plan on using it to make a smoke apron for the fireplace in my bedroom)
- a large wood clamp
- and my latest acquisition, a 150# Columbian 206

I also have a 30" tall 100# 25ton Simplex RR jack buried in a storage unit.
(handy for lifting my house to replace sills)

This is the back door of the shop and showing vintage heavy equipment, train, and truck wrenches 18" or longer. there's a reproduction cutout wrench promoting papaws vintage wrench site called tool talk.

http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php

Here's latest stars & stripes photo recognizing our armed forces. drive it weighs in at 1300 lbs as i added 50 lbs of options after purchase.

I won't post my vintage heavy crawler tractors or other big machinery around here as i consider it not as tools per'say.

Nice one, BJ42LX.
I have put together a nearly complete set by 16'ths from 1/4" to 2 3/8", your 3 1/8" trumps that for sure.
Strangely, most engineer's wrenches I see on here are Williams, and I only have a few. Most of mine are Armstrong & Fairmount.

I have a 2" Billings that someone drilled holes through to hang it up. I thought that was big, most likely bigger than I will ever need but not even in the same league as some of these tools.

Yeah, it's a conversation piece.

In practice, the handle is a little over 30" long. Even a strong man would only be able develop maybe 600 ft-lbs with it. For a 3-1/8" nut/bolt I think one would want well north of 1000 ft-lbs to hold a bridge or radio tower to the ground.

We have a socket at work that is almost 1 foot across made of 1/2 inch plates welded together, takes a 1in drive ratchet and torque wrench that 4ft long. Its for 747 axle nuts. Ill look for a picture.
I have one of those 2ft crescents, and I've used it on my superduty.
