A while back I ran across a repair kit to put a new detent ball in an extension, adapter or universal. I can't seem to find it again. It was a little self-contained ball and spring. It looked like you would drill the existing hole slightly over-sized then press this in. Anybody know what I'm talking about and where to get one?

With this kit it really didn't matter what the original size was. You could order a size larger than your original. You just drill the hole to the new specified size. Then put a drop of Loctite on it and press it in. It was kind of along the same line as a Heli-coil.

Ive used those a few times to repair some of my older extensions and ratchets, got got the idea from work where they are used for various attachments. Instead of using them as a press fit, i found a size for a slip fit, used loctite N primer and usually a drop or two of 609 or 680 locite retaining compound. Just need to be careful not to get any in the small hole in the backside of some of the plungers as the loctite will get in and lock up the spring.

Out of curiosity, what tool are you repairing?

An extension that the ball and spring popped out of.

Thanks Stooge. I'll try to order it correct size.

I'm trying to figure out how to measure the hole. I'm thinking that maybe finding a drill bit that fits tight then calipers.
