EDIT: Alloy Artifacts began receiving updates about a month ago.

I have a few tools I'd like to share with the folks at Alloy Artifacts. The disclaimer regarding use of their old e-mail address as a means of getting in contact is still posted to their site, so I'm not sure I can ask them directly.

Has their curator made it known through other means whether or not they will be resuming development?

It looks like that website hasn't been touched since 2011 and trademark expired 2009. Does anybody know if the info can be burned to disc? I would really hate to lose that website and all the info on it in the event of the death of the site owner (since it appears to be a private site).

I seem to recall some talk on the Darkside of someone doing just what you talked about "Burning it on a disk"; It would be a very sad day if that web-site ever went down.

Funny thing but sometimes I wonder if he is a member in good standing at the GJ or elsewhere? Now if only I could get a few more members to take up the torch as they say and keep it going; I am trying but my small funds do not go very far these days.

I am working on a story of a craftsman hand tool that I picked up so stay tuned for another story.

If you can burn it

Burn it

The problem would come in if you then posted the entirety of the website or sold info.

Fair use doctrine.

He has no interest in collecting tools at the present time (his words), he may change this in the future. But, he does not want his material copied and used elsewhere ( again, his wishes)

You can copy the information for personal use. Just make sure you don't ever try to profit from his work.

Honestly, I'm surprised with as many old school tool collectors we have in here, that someone doesn't have a current up to date website that would be like an online library of tools.

Quite right. It's his research (that took many, many hours) that he has been kind enough to share with others. I hope AA never goes away, but that's the owner's decision to make...

It's not all that hard to download a complete copy of the website to your hard drive. It might be a good idea to get it now and keep it for future reference if you think it might be taken down in the future.

Thanks for mentioning that website. I had no idea that it even existed. I took a quick look at it but I didn't see anything that mentioned exactly how websites get placed into their archives. Does someone have to "donate" the site or is there something that automatically searches the Internet and downloads sites? I see the purpose, which is to archive the contents of the Internet for historical record. Pretty amazing site. And, it keeps you from having to fill up your hard drive with websites that may or may not be useful to you in the future.

There is a link where you can request adding a site to be spidered. It works like a search engine, though it lets you see the chanes over time too.

Understood. If that interest returns, I have a few donations to make to his collection.

Too bad it wasn't set up in a Wikipedia way where we as users could update as a team.

The problem with things like that is keeping both spammers at bay and keeping on top of the content and rectifying mistakes. Even when users are submitting info rather than doing it oneself, it's still a time consuming task, making sure that errors and incorrect information are rectified etc. It's amazing just how much time maintaining a website can consume.

I'll just throw this out there...........If there's enough interest, I'd be glad to host / manage such a "wiki-type" site, with mucho reference to the AA site of course.

And by "enough interest," I mean post your interest in contributing in this thread. Frankly, I've asked about it before, and really haven't seen enough interest to justify it.

Nearly a year has passed since this was posted. Are there any updates to be had on the curator's plans for the Alloy Artifacts project?

Twertsy has fired up a site to compliment AA and there have been a few updates to AA since.

The new site encourages member input in a forum format.

I was looking at something the other night on AA and noted that there had been recent entries made, so it is being updated currently.

twertsy has got his site up and running - it just needs content. I am getting off to a very slow start getting stuff uploaded to the site - I think I goofed up the last post and am waiting to hear back from him before I proceed.

Naw, you're all good. I'll take care of the dupes.

If y'all haven't checked it out recently, I've been scanning/uploading many, many catalogs for your reference. You can also feel free to download a copy should you desire. My desk has piles more so look out for that. Here's the link to the cats uploaded so far.

ahh... thank you. wasn't sure where to put that... and there's really no way to break out that set into pieces and post them individually.

have some serious sorting and organizing to do here and will get more images uploaded.
