Hi All,

Well started progress on my 30x24 second garage/workshop at the bottom of my garden.

Huge thanks for my mates Chris & Simon who came round today  despite it being -5 Degress Centigrade!! :shocking:
To help dig out the footings for the base.

We managed to get it to a 26x18 by 1 foot deep today, just another 50% to still go....

Oh and all this was done by HAND! - No space to get a excavator in the back garden!

Not yet,
Going to work on that this week, but Ive also got to get water and power 200 feet down the garden as well...

Im probably going to section off a machine shop about 15x10 for my lathe, mill etc, then a small Bar/relax area then leave the rest for car building.

Next project will be a 40's style 32 roadster with a blown Ardun

They make mini excavators that should be able to get back there if you can get a car back there to it. That my friends is a lot of digging! Much respect for doing by hand!!

Yeah, the issue is until I remove the back wall of the current garage I have to make it a "drive through" I cant easily get an excavator into the back garden...

All the hard work gets some of that Xmas excess off though

I used to dig a lot when I was in the Army. Big holes with small shovels. That, along with running, shinning shoes, and getting regular hair cuts stopped when I got out!

Fellow I knew in Albuquerque many years ago had an early 50s house with a small garage on one side. And with 4' clearances to the property lines on both sides there was no vehicle access to the back yard. So he did what you are doing. Put a garage door in the back wall as well. And then he built a nice shop with guest quarters that he rented out. I am shure that by now it has paid for itself.

What part of England? My wife is from there and still has family in the Guilford area.

That is a lot of work.....but at least your soil is somewhat easy to work with....as compared to the hard clay in my area....

We need more pics....

What do you plan to use for the foundation?

Good job!! You must have some really good "mates" to help dig that foundation. I'm guessing that they will have garage privileges when it's finished.

Welcome!!!

Now THAT'S what I call dedication!!! You obviously want that new shop REAL bad! That is a lot of shovel work. I notice no footings, at least not yet. Are you pouring a floating slab, or are you going to dig them later? How deep?

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments so far,
Basically its getting 6" of scalpings (Sort or compactible stone chips) and then 6" of concrete with steel road mesh (The welded matrix sheets) to help hold it all together.

Think Im going to have to pour 2 slabs though to stop cracking etc.
Cant get any more done this week as have to work in Vegas for 1 week!

This is what the garage will look like, its a sectional wood construction. That way I dont have to get planning permission to build the thing!

four of us dug a similar space for a neighbour a few years back - his wife supplied the chip butties.

I intend to remind him when it's my turn - if I can't get a mini-digger in there, which I hope I can, my back STILL reminds me!

Keep the pics coming, I'm still planning mine for the new house, like the wooden garages in the link...

where in the UK are you?
