Hello Everybody!

English is not my native language but I hope that you will understand what I am trying to say :) I use a translator if necessary.

Here is basic info and pics on my small garage in Finland. I have 40 square meter basement underground and 48 square meter carport above.

Garage is not ready yet but it is already in use. Originally planning to build a wooden boat in the garage, but since I already have a good fiberglass fishing boat so I decided to do something bigger ... much bigger.

Here are a few pictures of the design. I used Google SketchUp for the pictures.

I Build parts in the garage and do assembly outdoors. Pontoon parts are made from 3mm thick stainless steel sheet metal. It was the most expensive option, but requires the least maintenance. Length of the pontoons will be 34.45 feet and the parts are welded together on both sides. Mig-welded inside and stick-welded outside. Pontoons are empty and there is not intended to add any buoyancy material. I will made deck hatches and in case of leakage you weld pontoons from inside.

I hope you understood :)

Looks nice, both the garage and build. Not a big fan of boats but this seems interesting, looking forward to seeing it finished.

PS. Onhan täällä muitakin Suomesta..

It´s kinda of substitute for summercottage. It is not intended to be a permanent resident. The houseboat also includes a sauna

Joni, on pitänyt pitkään tehdä ketju ja kun näin tuon sinun hienon rakennusketjun niin muistui taas mieleen ja sain tämän aikaiseksi. Tämä on mukava paikka kun on käyttäjiä pitkin maailmaa

Thank you guys!

Boat building is going to be a long project. 1 year behind and at least 3-4 more to come. I will add updates as the work progresses. I have to made 2 more pontoons and then the build will move to outside. Also need to wait for the summer. last night the temperature was -24ºC = -11.200ºF :eyecrazy:

I also have plans for the future with the garage. After houseboat is finished (hope that day will come) i would like an American car project. Ultimate car for me would be Second or Third generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Interesting builds... The title made me to believe that someone figured out how to put a garage on a house boat or q floating house like they have in Holland. LOL neitherless if you put that much work into to garage I can't wait to see the boat.

This is a great thread. I am going to look forward to your postings. I thought about building a boat once and thought it through and realized the size of the project. You are living on of my dreams.

I have a question, not a criticism, in Canada and the US a boat has to not sink. In the worst disaster it has to stay at the surface so people can cling to it. Is there any kind of regulation like that in Finland?

Glad to hear that the project is interesting. I have tried to search the web but I have not come across yet similar. However, this is still a small project, if you compare to some of the projects seen here. Some of them are absolutely "jaw dropping" stuff

To my knowledge, no such requirement for a Self-made boat in Finland. You have to register the boat, and it may not be sold than 5 years from the registration. I belive that reason for this is that no one can avoid taxes by selling self-made boats.

The law requirements can be found here (Text is in English) https://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/home.nsf/pages/C8959FDB5AAE59DDC2256C3700375425?opendocument

Great job!

I admire that craftmanship, both the building and the boat.

PS löysin nuo sun talliprojektin rakennuskuvat jostain suomalaiselta foorumilta noin vuos sitte, aivan käsittämättömän asiallinen meininki. Oma kovasti vaatimattomampi rojekti käynnissä. Ilmottelen...

Hi Jim and thanks!

I thought that somebody would ask about the beams. Lower level is build underground and surrounding ground will cause pressure against the wall. Beams are for the wall support against ground pressure.

First off both are very cool projects!. So what is the deal with the precast panels, did you encapsulate those with a top slab that ties the walls together. Thanks

Thanks guys!

It needs Concrete floor casting on top. Casting will bind slabs and walls. Hollow-core slabs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow-core_slab ) are an easy way to make floors.

4XdBc.jpg

According to the manufacturer of hollow core slabs a load capacity is 600kg / m2 when the span is 5 meters. The carport is for 2 cars and the slab should take the weight of the cars.

Very nice! Great solution to keep actual size of garage relatively small but still have lots of space.

Kommenttien perusteella tästä on hyvää vauhtia tulossa "fins of garagejournal"-topic!

Very nice ! I love looking at pictures showing building techniques from around the world ! I have never seen those pre-stressed hollow core slabs !

Are the large diameter vertical tubes for pumping water out from below the lower level floor ?

Very interesting garage build pictures. What are the two long poles or pipes on the roof for? It looks like they are held on to the roofing with brackets. Snow melt?

It is a good solution for a small yard.

Täällä on mukavasti eri kansallisuuksia läsnä ja näköjään myös suomalaisia :)

Hollow core slabs are pretty common around here. Vertical tubes are connected to perforated drainpipes and you can pump water through them if drainpipes should clogged. Diameter is big enough for submersible pump. You can also monitor water level trough them.

Thanks!

Pipes are part of the metal roof snow barrier.

Short visit today to the local school. I got to try out VRTEX Welding simulator. It was really difficult, and if someone out there will learn to weld with that...he can weld with on any machine (not me in the picture) :p

kipvBWj.jpg

Instead, this machine actually welded really nicely :rocker:

Little progress with the pontoons today. Working with pontoon 4/6. Two pieces weldet together with MIG and next thing do to is turn it upside down and weld outside with the stick. Next week is planned to fab and weld nose cone/ bow (or what ever is the right word) to this pontoon.

Love that that monorail hoist and the way you have suspended it .

Truly a first class build. Reminds me of a bomb shelter.

Enjoy it in good health.
