Air compressor replacement pump

Looks like my used Puma compressor pump just bought the farm. At this point I'm not interested in repairing the pump, just ready to move on to a new one.

The current pump is rated at 18CFm at 125PSI, with a 6.5HP motor. At some point the motor was replaced and appear to be a 5HP. So I'm looking at replacement pumps rated for 5HP, there seems to be a lot of options, and vendors out there(and COO). So my question is has anyone been down this path with a good experience with a particular vendor, and bad experience?

Pulled the pump today just to validate the pump is bad, and to also check the tank over.

Pump had a bad rod bearing on #2 cylinder, and the crank is shot. So I'm headed for a new pump. Pretty sure I am going for the one from Eaton I linked above.

Wanted to update this thread on my progress.

Bought the Eaton Pump, they indicated a healthy lead time and I was good with that. Turns out they ran a couple of weeks over their estimate, and I'm still OK with it.

Picked up the pump today at the Freight terminal. The skid was 245lbs according to the shipping docs. This thing is HUGE. I knew it was bigger, and absorbed the measurement in the listing, but to see it in person is different. The size wont cause any problems although I may have to add some ears to the mount plate on the tank.

I removed the pump from the skid in the back of my truck, and was able to move it to the tailgate, then I grabbed it and put it down on a dolly. Wasn't too bad but I wouldn't recommend just anyone do it, I work out a lot and it was still heavy.

Here is the old single stage 3 cylinder next to the two stage 2 cylinder.

I have a Sanborn 60 gal 5hp vertical unit that was rated at 10 cfm at 90 psi and 125 psi max. The pump went bang, yesterday. There is a crack in the pump housing.

This looks like a nice option as I would like to be able to actually use my blast cabinet at 90 psi for more than a few seconds at a time. I don't use air all of the time, but I want a lot of it when needed. Of course I am on a budget as well. I was considering the HF pump, but the specs on this one look good.

Let us know how the swap goes. Are you going to mount it on top of a vertical tank? 60 gallon?

I just replaced the pump on my Sanborn 5HP 60 gallon today. I bought from these guys. They have an 800 number in their ad. I was very pleased with their service. I had a tracking number in less than 15 minutes after I payed, and had the pump in 24 hours.

I toyed with the idea of making a compressor "sled" that would be separated from the tank. I like the idea but need to get the compressor back in service so I'm taking the easy route and mounting it back on the tank.

I got the pump up there yesterday, removed the flywheel, and with the help of a heavy duty 2 step ladder I man handled it up there(I held the pump while I stepped up 1 step). Really wasn't too bad, as I didn't want to drop the pump I was very cautious. I probably should have waited for my Son to be home next weekend but it's up there now...

I added some angle to the mount plate as the base of the pump is a bit larger than the old pump. I also wanted to tuck the flywheel in towards the mount plate as much as possible. As it sits now I need to plumb the pump to the tank, and get some new belts(old belts wouldn't even fit around the new flywheel) and it will be ready for some testing. I'm going to fabricate a new belt guard as well since the old one is now way too small.

I had a couple of objectives when I bought this pump. I could have gone much cheaper, and less capacity. But I wanted to make a purchase that should last me for many years. I expect to replace the motor, and tank before I replace this pump. In addition with the low RPM of this pump the noise level is significantly less than the old pump, that is a big plus as well since the compressor sits about 4 feet from the blast cabinet.

Good call on the pump! I am doing the same but with a Kellogg. the New/old one I found is Huge compared to the old one. Good luck with the new!

I am in the same position. I could get the small Eaton pump to match my 1987 motor and tank, or a HF pump, but I want to go big and hopefully be set for many years, and not wish I had gone bigger.

My compressor sits outside the garage but it was noisy enough inside and pretty loud outside. I am looking at getting the Eaton 5hp 2 stage 60 gallon compressor and building an overhang over it or a small shed to protect it. The old compressor sits in the open, but it was ugly when I got it.

I read some of the controversy on the Eaton brand, but I have read almost all good reviews about the product. Quincy would cost me $2,000+ for 19 cfm at 100 psi. I also like the low speed of the Eaton. I emailed them for a shipping quote, but have not heard back yet.

Still working on getting this running, travel has hindered my progress.

I had a miss on the first set of belts, I thought I had more adjustment room than I did, 64" belts wouldn't snug up so I ordered some shorter ones.

The output on the pump is 3/4" pipe. For some reason I decided to plumb it in with 3/4" copper tube. Turns out 3/4" is pretty atypical. I found the tube no problem, the challenge is the flare nuts, 3/4"FL fittings, and even a 3/4" flaring tool. I finally found an online source for the fittings and have them on the way. I will start bending the tube this weekend.

I made great progress on the belt guard last weekend, need to go to my storage unit and look for some perforated metal I think I have over there.

Nice bud!, your old pump looks like the one i have thats blowing tons of oil vapor out of the vent. Im pretty sure its damaged, so i might go the same route you did, what did the front of the old pump look like? Was it similar to mine?

Looks very similar! Sounds like air is passing into the crankcase for some reason. Mine actually blew the sight glass out due to the pressure.

I recalculated my cfm rating that its actually producing, and its about 14 and its originally rated for 16 which isnt bad. The problem is that when the oil blows out the vent the vapors collect on the discharge header and burn off and smoke bad lol. So i removed the stock vent adapter, put a hose barb there and rerouted and extended the vent pipe up and away from the hot parts. You can see it in the top right of the picture i posted.

Thats crazy that your sight glass blew out, i bet u walked over there and were like what the hell. Hahaha

Today's update. I don't think the copper tube will work, the bends are just too tight. So I headed down the path of rigid pipe. I got the new belts today, and had to do a test fire of the unit even though it isn't plumbed to the tank. The pump is incredibly quiet, really had no idea it would be this quiet, I'm very pleased.

Finished the piping tonight and gave it a test run.

So far I'm still very pleased. I made my own after cooler out of copper pipe, essentially about 8' of pipe in about a 1 sq ft section that sits in front of the flywheel so air is drawn across it. for the test runs the top inlet of the cooler was hot to the touch, and the lower outlet was cool, so it appears it is doing it's job.

The pump filled the tank from empty to 150lbs very quickly, will have to time it next time. The switch is currently set at 100-150 so I ran the tank pressure down, the recovery from 100 to 150 was very quick.

Still working on the belt guard, hope to have it done this weekend then I will snag some pics.

Finished the belt guard Sunday and put the compressor into service. I'm very pleased with the pump. I timed the fill of the tank from 0 to 150psi, took a little over 4 minutes.

I did some blasting tonight and the compressor easily kept up with me. I added a drop leg with a drain after the cooler, I get a little water out of it every time I run the compressor so the cooler is working. Plus there is a distinct temp difference from the entry to the cooler, to the entry into the tank.

Is the cooler between the pump and tank or the tank and the lines in the garage?

That pump is heavy it took 2 of us to lift one before and Easton pumps are well made. you must work out lifting cars or something
What is the amperage on that motor it looks like a 3 HP motor what pulley size do you have on the motor That pump recommends a 5 HP 184T frame motor to run it be careful you dont burn your motor out.
Great job on the belt guard, that pump will last you 30 years

Ha, it was quite the effort getting it up there, I think it was just sheer determination...

It's a 5HP motor, 22A rated, I did have issues with it overheating, put a smaller pulley on the motor to slow it down some and it runs fine now.

Hey shoot, could you give more info on that cooler for us, please? Size and type of pipe, did you fit it all together then solder or did you solder as you went? Solder type? I'd like to make one of those and I'm not familiar with soldering copper pipe.
