Elroy was doing a little tune up this afternoon and noticed yet another pair of Made in Japan Craftsman "speciality" wrenches in the tool box. Best guess on purchase date would be early 1980's

Elroy also took the liberty of copying and pasting two posts from old threads that addressed this same subject simply because the original "Craftsman" post was getting really long.

Do you think Elroy could sell this little made in Japan Craftsman on E-Bay and get enough to retire?

Sorry Elroy, Not today.

Elroy,

That's an interesting wrench you got there. And it has the BF series code on it.

The BF series (made in Japan) tools seem to have been sold between 1969 and 1987, at least according to folks who have posted on this series code. All of the posts involved open end wrenches, combo wrenches, and assorted pliers. Until now, no specialty tools have been posted.

What type of wrench is this (distributor, carburetor, clearance)?

Did your purchase date fall within the 1969 - 1987 date range? If not, approximately when did you purchase this tool?

Interesting.... what's your assessment of the Japanese quality (from that vintage)?

They're fine. They don't have a real high polish finish. But then again these particular tools are almost 30 years old and there is zero corrosion. The steel also has a very good heat treat to them. They have been "layed into" a few times and have stood up just fine.

Response has been in the afirmative as to the quality of these Japanese wrenches and desired to post a few additional detail shots for your enjoyment:

My FIL has some of these Japan Craftsman tools. His brother had a hardware store and, well, used to buy and sell some grey market kinda stuff if you get my drift. Anyway, he has a few laying around his barn.

My dad's C-man floor jack was made in Japan. It's 30+ years old, rated at 1.5 tons, and still works great. Green except for the large saddle which is white. He paid $100 for it back then which seemed like a fortune. Turns out it was money well spent.

I think that is the Daido. Tools are mentioned on thier site. The history says they started in the US in 1965 and my father gave me the Sears BF made in Japan wrench around 1968.

I also have a Daido made in Korea extension, but I do not think it came from Sears.

Also have pliers marked BF Japan on the handle, but I don't know where it came from. No other marking on the tool other than drop forged. This one is not a quality tool.

I have serveral of those Craftsman distributor wrenches that were made in Japan. I bought mine back in 72 when I worked at Sears warehouse in Atlanta. They have been put through the test and passed with flying colors.
