Floor Jack Storage

I have four floor jacks and they take up a lot of shop space. Most of the time I'm only using one or two but I haven't had any convenient way to tuck them out of the way.

I welded up this wheeled jack stand from 2" square tubing for the structure and 3/4" square tubing for the handle stands. Wheels are from Harbor Freight.

These work great, easy to move around and a good use of space.

Now I need to figure out what to do the jackstands and wheel chocks, any ideas?

If you look at the picture of the bare rack, you can see a "hook" I made from angle iron that holds the jacks at the top cross pin. this holds the jack from the top. The stand length was sized such that the bottom of the jack is held in place by the structure that holds the wheels.

Holding the jack at the upper cross pin also keeps the jack from extending out while on the rack.

In practice, this design works for all the jacks I have (three different models) and keeps them nicely held in when wheeling it about.

I don't know about you but the handles are "up" 100% of the time on all my floor jacks, there are springs that keep them that way. Putting the handle down just makes something to trip over.

As to storing the jacks vertically instead of horizontally, I haven't had any problems with them since doing this.

Just curious about how the vents work. I would have thought they would leak fluid from the vents.

Floor jacks are a pain to store in a small shop and have them readily accessible.

Very neat jack stand eriksalo, nice job.
I stored mine in a cubbard.
As you cas see, a spring keeps the handle in the up position.

Did you say, instructions???

I may be publicizing my ignorance on the matter, and I do not remember the reasoning, however somewhere in the vast abyss of a brain I seem to remember it being bad ju ju to store a jack vertical....anyone have any insight into storing a jack vertically....

I looked over my floor jacks closely before starting the project, there are no vents I can see. None of them have leaked since I started storing them this way.

My jack is over 150 pounds. I get a hernia each time I try to lift it.

Don't move it by hand. Use another jack.

Sorry, but my floor jack is heavy, it has wheels, it will stay on the floor with my welded-together 2-piece handle ready for use! Not worth man-handling the thing every time I want to use it in order to save a square foot of floor space. Nice welding project on the rack, though!

I built a very low shelf out of scrap lumber, just above the top of my jack, which just rolls under the shelf. Mine has a removable handle, but yours could be made to fit right next to the shelf. I store 5 jack stands on top of the lower shelf, and there's an upper shelf above those.

OP - great idea on the rolling storage racks!

those instruction are generalized for a hydraulic cylinder. store with the rod inside the cylinder. those jacks are impossible to keep depressed unless you leave the handle in and held down.
