The started on a pole barn down a mile down the road from me a week ago, and this is where they are at. I have a few pics so give me a few minutes to get them loaded before you reply, and I'll post when the last is loaded. The building is being built by Morton Buildings. The small room off to the side is the house, and the taller structure is the garage. He has a truck and a fifth wheel that has sit outside for close to ten years tops, and he has another large pickup. I didn't get any pics of them. All I know is that in the summer, someone comes from wherever to mow the field, and a couple of weeks ago they brought a 'dozer and skidsteer with a post hole auger on it. In one of the pics you will see the extra adjustable inground post so no wood is in the ground. I forget what they are called right at the moment, but they seem to be the latest greatest when it comes to setting your post. Also, you will see chains and turnbuckles so they can keep the rack out of the building.

The small side, by stepping it off is roughly 34'x54' x 10' ceiling height, and the actual barn itself is roughly 54' x 120'x 16' ceiling height and scissor trusses.

They use laminated post, notched for the metal going between, and everything is bolted to the post in the ground. The 16' laminated post are as straight as can be. I was very impressed by what they have done in a weeks time, and I will try to keep up on what is going on and try to keep the thread updated. I'm interested in seeing how they finish things off. The owner only shows up every so often so he must live out of town a ways, but I am going to try and hook up with him, and possibly see if he will join up on here. So I'll post pics as I get them.

But give me about ten minutes before replying so I can keep all of the pics together.

Re: Not mine, but really green with envy

And the last few. BTW....the living quarters is right in center of the barn section when facing it from the front, but I didn't notice it until I pulled out, and I had too much traffic behind me to get a direct front on pic.

So like I said, I'll try my best to keep things updated and try to hook up with the owner. I also asked Morton what a ballpark figure would be for something that size, and with nothing done, he said probably around $150,000. Now that is in our area, and just for the building I believe, and nothing else, except maybe concrete. When I stopped, they were busy as hell trying to get done what you see as far as the tin goes because it was fairly windy.

They also had a roll-off container, and scrap was very minimal so far. Not much tin, and not much wood in the container.

I have no clue, but the trailer indicates that he may have, but the trailer and truck has been sitting there for a number of years. I want to meet him when he shows up sometime.

But it isn't green???

What isn't green? :headscrat

Well forget that, I forgot the heading goes to each reply :lol:

Concrete footers, laminated columns. The RIGHT way to build a pole building that you want to last 50-100 years !

With a title like that, I expected to see some green tools or toolboxes. I guess I have been bitten by the green bug.

Regardless of the color, it is a big chunk of awesomeness for sure.

I like the Cupola Caps.
I may be missing something but those are two overhead door openings correct. Isnt there suppose to be a much larger header for both of those or is it going in later?

Wow! What a gorgeous structure so far!

Can anyone shed some light on what is attached to the side of that Ford loader? Look at the third set of pictures, first picture.

I remember a tractor like that when they built my Morton building. It had several "Morton specific" features on it. I think that platform had railing that folded up to use as scaffolding and could also be used to move metal or post. Those guys are awesome to watch. My 44' X 75' original building went from dirt to completed (except for concrete floor and roll up doors) in about 1 week. As for scraps, being cheap I said I would dispose of myself. I think I had 1 pick-up load to haul off. They engineer the heck out of those buildings and there is very little waste. What they quote is what you pay, however because of the tight engineering and material figuring changes are frowned upon after a certain point in the process and probably impossible during actual construction. Chip.

May be the gable end truss is used as a header. It also looks like the perimeter of the doors is a different color, perhaps metal?

Pole building process itself supports the building. Big headers not needed over door openings as no weight to support. Poles and upper skeleton does all that.

I stopped today and was talking to the owner, plus I gave him a paper with Garage Journals website, and invited him to sign up. I can't remember his last name, but his first name is Hank. Very nice older gentleman originally from Chicago. We talked for a little while, and I didn't want to keep him too long as he was getting ready to trench for his electric. I don't know if he made a mistake when talking with me, but he said that he is running 330 to his house and barn. I'm thinking possibly that he meant 3 phase, and 220 to the house and garage. the house portion is on one 220 box, and the living quarters is on another 220 box. The living quarters is now 28' x 48' long, and he is coming another 20' into the garage portion for an added 20' x 40' for added living space, so it will total a little over 2000 sq. ft.

Morton Buildings has kicked some serious *** on this place with the crappy weather we've been having. They have all of the garage portion completed. I asked him why the upper half of the garage side had perforated panels, and he told me it was a sound deadener. The holes allow for sound to be absorbed. It makes sense. I know when the wife was in a sound proof room for her hearing test, the walls were all perforated tin.

Anyways......I asked him if he minded if I take some pics, and he was more than happy to let me take them. So hold on for a second as I have 18 to put up for you to drool over. I sure wish it was my place, that's for certain. Hopefully I can get some when the rest of the living quarters gets built up along with the floor in. And I'll answer whatever I can for you guys, or I'll be sure to ask the next time I see him. Hopefully he will join up on here. Oh....and he has a '64 'Vette he drag races, but I didn't get to see it.

Seems odd to me that a structure that size is held up by threaded rod. I'm well aware of mortons reputation, just seems weak to me...

It also strikes me as weird that a grown man is taking build pics of another mans build, who he doesn't know and just met...

I don't think it's at all strange. I have taken pictures of a neighbors log home being erected and of a private company stringing big time power lines on electrical towers, pictures of......well....you get the picture. If Kevin hadn't we wouldn't be sitting here looking at them. Thanks Kevin.

:headscrat Why is it weird? My wife and I along with many others go through houses being built all of the time. For one, it is good advertisement by word of mouth for the contractors building it, and for another, it gives people ideas as to what they may want to do to their place, or have built, and so on. It may seem weird to you, or it may seem weird in the area you live, but around here, people regularly walk through a new house going up before the owners get moved in and the place locked up.

Aside from that, we may have a potential new member, and I have met a new friend. Yesterday, he was standing down in a 48" deep hole, so I pulled in through the field and asked him what he was up to, or down to. He had to dig it out for his new power box going in. I told him that when it comes times to backfill everything to let me know, and I will backfill his trench and box for him. He was more than grateful, and said he would let me know when the time comes. Maybe a lot of others should offer a helping hand to a new person in the 'hood and grab the chance to meet someone. The build was an interesting build, and I thought I would share that build with others on here to get ideas if they had plans to build a pole barn. Just like adding perforated metal above to absorb sound.......how many on here actually knew that you could do that?

As far as weird.......maybe I'm just a weird person then. :dunno:

No need to justify Kevin, its a cool building and we always get the "pole barns will never work" crowd. I have an early version of a pole barn on my farm that was built in 1942....it may not ever work but as long as it doesnt work for another 30 years or so I'm good.

I guess I'm weird too since I've taken photos of barn restorations around my area and posted them on here....

It's ok though....I like being weird!

Kevin, is it on 36,68,29,55,516?
It would be a nice drive from Englewood up there to just put the eyeball on it-just weird that way?

When houses were built around me, everyone walked through them. When my house was being built, I found quite a few neighbors walking through them. Its human nature to be curious. At least you got to meet the guy and have become friendly. I don't think it's weird one bit.

This is garage ****, and one reason I want to move back to OH and by some (re: a lot of) land east of Cincy overlooking the river*.

Also, I used to always go through new construction as a kid with my folks and by myself. It may be why I love architecture and construction even though I **** at both. LOL I will say it may be a northern thing though, as down south it's kinda poopoo'd on and people are often weirded out by it. Maybe fear of litigation if someone hurts, or "hurts", themselves on the property? :dunno:
