Update: Looks like Amazon is matching these prices now.

Don't really see these going on sale often so I thought I'd share. Roughly 20% their compressors with free shipping to home or store.

Are these better than the husky oiled air compressors of comprable size? I just want something to keep my tires inflated and for cleaning dust around the garage.

I don't know about longetivity, but I was definitely impressed with the one I used a few years ago doing a job. Thing's damn near silent. (The 1.6 gal)

This oil-free compressor is exception to general rule that they're ****.

These California Air compressors ARE Very Good . . . . . Quiet compressors.

Couple months ago, there was great price on RetailMeNot so look back on that GJ thread to see best pricing, compared to these HD prices.

If I were starting life all over, I'd get the 10 gal California Air as my portable compressor, and then 60 gal 5 HP permanent compressor in garage. You would never need to buy any more compressors in your lifetime !! :D

lol Husky compressors **** compared to these.

oil free, out.

These are one of the few exceptions to "don't buy oil-less", but I personally would still choose the Makita MAC line over these.

I needed a smaller compressor and was considering the Makita MAC and other top lower noise compressors a few months ago. I ended up getting a CAT-6310 on sale around Christmas and have been very pleased so far. Although it's oil-free, its design actually makes it quieter than OIL lubricated models of its size.

I have the 4620A and have been happy with it now for 3 years. I will have to say customer service for me was great. I broke a elbow that comes out of the compressor and goes to the tank. My fault totally so I email customer support asking to purchase the broken piece. The replied same day asking for my address and told me they would get me a invoice. Heard nothing for 2 days until the part was in the mail box.

This goes against all the rules about not getting a Oilless Compressor. Thing is still years later stupid quiet.

I have the 6.3 gal and don't let the oil-free fool you, it's quieter than most oil-lubed compressors. It won't run an impact but for brad nailers, filling tires, etc it's perfect. Super quiet for sure.

The Makita Mac is not quiet by any definition. It is loud IMO. But at 8 yrs old for me, it still works. The pressure regulator needs to be used about monthly, or you'll be tinkering with it for 15-20 minutes until it gets worked enough to work right.

I picked up one of the 10 gal CAT oil-less compressors during that "hot deal" and they are indeed superb compressors. I don't know how they do it but it's so flippin quiet you wouldn't believe it. It's my day-to-day shop compressor while I rebuild the Quincy.

I bought the CAT 4620A 3 days ago from Amazon. I had been looking at getting it for a while and finally went through with it, I would have got it from HD but it was out of stock online so I got it from CAT directly on Amazon. I'm guessing the 4620A would be discounted also but it still shows out of stock online. Looking at the other models they discounted I am still happy with my purchase as the 4620A is the perfect size I need in HP, capacity, overall dimension and weight. It should be here middle of next week and as soon as it does I will start playing with it.

I bought the 10 gallon from ATG when they had that sale for $229. I have yet to plug it in yet, actually even take it out of its box. Maybe I'll see today how quiet it really is :)

I can't believe how much money this forum has cost me! I have a nice little Craftsman 7 gallon oil-lubricated that I've had for a couple years now and have been pretty happy with. I planned on keeping it as a back up / portable unit now that I have a nice 20 gallon. But it's loud, and the 6 gallon model listed in the OP is pretty comparable.

So is it worth spending $60 to upgrade (assuming I can sell mine for $100)? I'm checking to see if Sears will price match HD, so then I can use points on it.

Which model Makita? The MAC700 and MAC2400 run at 1700 rpm.... all of my friends are amazed at how quiet it is. The MAC5200 runs at 3400 rpm and I imagine is much louder.

between the 1.6 and 6.3, what do you guys recommend?

I just need it for tire inflating and dust removal. I have electric impact guns so I don't need it for that.

The price is so close I am leaning toward the 6.3....

Also, amazon doesn't seem to be matching the price anymore, or the vendor sold out.

Thanks OP! I think I will pick up the 6.3gal to replace my deafening 6gal Porter Cable that is luckily still within the return period.

My buddy has the 10gal 2HP. I am very impressed. Quiet, and it does indeed have sufficient capacity to run a 1/2" impact just fine, thank you. you just can't run the impact constantly. this will work fine for everything but an air grinder or sand blaster or something like that.

My buddy is planning on running 1" air line throughout the garage and pipe this into it. the volume of the pipe will really add some capacity, and if that is not sufficient, he may add an additional 10/20 gallon air tank.

As mentioned before, this is definitely top quality, and QUIET. standing 10 feet away, it is hardly noticeable. You cant go wrong with this for the -average- home shop.

5200. It is the typical loud oil-less compressor.

I have the 4610A and love it. It has dual pistons so it runs slower, which keeps the noise down.

Is this how they keep the compressor so quiet? I'm seriously debating the 1.6 gal one for airbrushing...may be overkill but am considering it, provided it's not too bulky. Someone talk me into/out of it!

Increasing the diameter of a piston and doubling the number of pistons permits filling the tank at lower rpm while maintaining a fill rate comparable to other compressors of its size. Lower rpms means less noise.

How come they don't have one with a larger air tank - 60 gal. Are the motors too small to fill a tank that size? Can't they make a larger motor that's quiet with a larger tank?

^ ^ ^ Pumps and tanks are sized for RELIABLE use. Thus, it's hard on pump to be ran continuously for hours and hours like a 5 HP 60 oil-splash compressor.

The California Air oil-less work best when they run a while and fill tank/pressure but shutoff so they can cool. Then start back up when more air is needed.

As general practice, people need at least 2 compressors to cover various activities . . . .
. . . [SMALL] . . . . light use portable like these California Air that run on 120v and can run brad nailers, air up tires, run small air tools, etc.
. . . [LARGE] . . . heavy-use permanent compressor like 5 HP 60 gal oil-splash compressor running on 240v and connected to airline system

Other small compressor I still want to get is quality 12v cigarette lighter compressor that can go mobile in vehicle.

wonder if you can run these 2HP ones in tandem to achieve that CFM of the 60 Gal ones...

similar to what this guy have done.

I see the same price on amazon as HD for the large compressor

really close to pulling the trigger on the largest one

The largest compressor is already about maxing the ability of the pumps. 10.6 is decent, but my middle of the road 60 gallon is 18.6 @90. So, if you are never going to blast, and only occasionally going to use cutoffs, etc. it is an intriguing solution. You definitely pay a premium price for the silence. If their next generation gets closer to the 18 @ 90, I will consider one.

Maybe not the right place to ask this, but did you guys get a filter in the box and what are you doing with it?

Just got my 6310 in the mail and it was loose in the box. The instructions say to screw it into the air exit of the pump but the fittings aren't the right size or orientation (male/female). Plus all the air lines were already hooked up to run as-is so I'm wondering if this filter is even necessary (and because it's oil-less too).

I'm only using this to release the air locks on my lift and fill up tires or blow stuff off.

My 1610A was delivered today. You screw the filter into the air inlet. You see the brass fitting on one of the pumps for the braided hose down to the tank? Look kiddie corner across to the other pump and you'll see the threaded hole for the air inlet. Screw it in there.

Thanks man. Really appreciate it. For some reason I got it in my head that it was for the air outlet. Really great compressor BTW. My only gripe is that one of the wheel brackets was welded slightly crooked. I don't plan to wheel it around much so no big deal

Does anyone know if these go on sale at HD periodically? I meant to get one but it slipped my mind. I'd like to get it while on sale if possible. Thanks
