I am Fred Zwicker - original founder (in early 1970s) of Tip Tools & Skat Blast - located in NE Ohio. See our ads on rear page of Hemmings every month. I am retired but still help my son run TP Tools & Skat Blast (Mfg. in USA of Sandblasting Cabinets & HVLP Paint Spray Systems). I come to work a few afternoons every week and "I work for food" - son buys the lunch!

Over the past few years we have constructed 4 separate garage buildings for our car museum and for extra storage. Building sizes: 60' x 96' (two), 45' x 150' and 40' x 80'. We have a lot of neat interior vintage gas station and country store decor that I would like to publish in the near future if any interest. At present we are constructing a '50s Diner for the one car museum. The Diner will be 28' long and 4' deep and it is about 50% finished. We plan to have neon trim on the building and some mannequins at some of the tables. In the meantime, see our car museum buildings and about 50 cars at www.tpcarcollection.com or check TP Tools on Facebook.

In the meantime, here is a peek preview of the Diner as of last week.

Hi Fred,
Welcome! I have a Skat Blast cabinet and like it. I don't know how I did without before purchasing it six years ago.
Please post pictures of the TIP collection, is the collection open to the public?

Our car collection is open to the public every Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM (2 buildings and about 50 cars). We have a full-time restoration shop and restore many of our own cars - sometimes doing a one-year body off restoration. See our cars at www.tpcarcollection.com or www.tipcars.us or try TP Tools on Facebook.

I've been to the collection. It's got some really nice cars. If you like old Buicks (If I recall correctly)you'll be in heaven. I also have a 780TL cabinet and it's great

Hello Mr. Fred Zwicker and welcome to The Garage Journal. I was just at TP Tool twice this week and was there Sat. tonsee the new building. Own a cabinet and a compressor of yours. I am an older fellow, and grew up in the neighborhood of Truman Dry Cleaner's. You have a super nice collection of cars/trucks and your attention to detail in the presentation of them is a joy to see. Nice to have you here.

Hello Drivesitfar: To operate a Skat Blast Cabinet you will need about 20 cfm of air at 100 PSI, so most any good 5 HP 2-stage compressor will do. If shopping for an air compressor, always look at the output in cfm at pressure, not HP, as some manufacturers over-state the horsepower. If you don't have that much air, a smaller nozzle/air jet combo is available that will work on as low as 3 HP, but results will be slow.

TP Tools just came out with their new (free) 164 page catalog that can be ordered by phone 800-321-9260, or on the Internet at www.tptools.com . Catalogs are shipped the same day via 1st Class Mail, along with a current sale flyer. TP stocks Quincy and Champion - both are Made in USA. Current Catalog shows a large selection of either brand and all are Freight Prepaid US 48 states. If you don't want to wait on the catalog, go to the web site and enter 'air compressor' and they should come up. On Page 52 of the TP Catalog are Package Specials of various Skat Blast (Made in USA) Cabinets and Champion Air Compressors. Hope this info is helpful.

Great looking store if you guys ever get the chance to see it. Staffed with nice knowledgeable people. At least every time I've been there. Been a customer for a little over 10 years. You will see a few complaints about gruff customer service people, but I've never experienced one myself. Thank you for having the shows where the manufacture reps are at your shop. I get loads of great tech at them!! The museum is a real treat to see. I need to remember to pick up a few bags of Skat-Blast next time I'm over over in Canfield. I should have picked it up at the Swap Meet last week, but I didn't feel like carrying it!! Keith

Hi Fred! Glad to have you here, hope you stick around. We always like to see pictures so yes, there's certainly interest.

One thing I've always been curious about - why did the company name change from "TIP" to "TP?"

Hi Fred, Bought your 960 model about 3 years ago. Couldn't be happier with it. I've been to the store a couple of years ago, but I hope to catch a day when the museum is open the next time.

Fred,
It is wonderful to hear from you!
When I was growing up, my dad bought a TIP 70 pressure blaster, and my best friend bought the "99er" and a Quincy compressor from you guys. My dad also built a blasting cabinet out of wood with plans and parts from TIP. I have used all of these over the years, and I have always been impressed with the quality and value that your products offer.
I spent MANY hours as a teenager and young adult thumbing through your catalogs. Also, the TIP compressor plumbing layout drawing has been posted many times on this board to show people the proper way to plum compressed air.
Thanks for all you have done for the automotive community.

Here's a picture of a blast cabinet I made from plans and parts from TP Tools.

You and your son have a great website and products.

Thanks to all Garage Journal Forum members who have been so faithful and complimentary! I am retired now, but still come in most every afternoon to tinker with our car collection and help out as needed (son and I have about 50 cars on display, along with a LOT of interesting decor in our two car museum buildings. Actually our son now owns the business since I retired. I work for food - he buys my lunch!

In my introductory post on May 3rd, I showed a picture of a 50s replica Diner that we were building. The Diner is now finished and on display in our 2nd (larger) car museum building, along with some famous customers (Marilyn, Elvis, James Dean, Fonzi and others).

Attached are two pictures of the new Diner. If you look closely at the Menu on the back wall on left hand side, you will see a sign: "Today's Menu: Take it or Leave It! (minimizes minor complaints). We have actually had people drive for miles who heard about this Diner and thought it was a real restaurant. So we now call it a replica Diner. (28' long x 4' deep).

We spent about 2 months constructing this, and it was built using our equipment and painted with our HVLP paint spray system, which was ideal as it was too large for our spray booth (Our HVLP is "low overspray"). The new Diner is the feature attraction of our many other car museum displays. (country store, vintage service station, auto service garage, Buick service department, dentist office, barber shop, hardware store, 50s Diner, vintage malt shop, work clothing store and an old ticket booth from years past. Our car museum is open every Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM and admittance is free. Please call in advance if bringing in a car club or large group - thanks. For some pictures, see www.tipcars.us This web site is currently in process, but more pictures will be added in the coming months. On Facebook, check TP Tools for more pictures of our car collection.

My wife and I started this business as sort of a hobby in the early 1970s with $500, and at the time we were in the dry cleaning business in Youngstown, Ohio. We built "Made in USA" sandblasters and cabinets in several apartments behind the cleaners, later moving to a small warehouse across the side street, which we quickly outgrew. In 1982 we moved to our present location in Canfield, Ohio where we have 30 acres of land in a nice rural setting. Over the years, as business improved, we added more buildings and currently our complex is over 100,000 sq. ft. and we have about 40 full-time employees, most of whom have been with us for many years.

We handle things the old fashioned way - answering our phones live (no recordings to listen to or buttons to push at Tip). When the 800 line rings, everyone and anyone will answer, including our office or purchasing manager, and anyone else on premises. We can provide technical help on the spot by phone if needed. Today most new customers find us on the Internet and eBay. While we want new customers, we sure want to keep our old customers happy too. We still display at Carlisle and Hershey, as well as the Canfield Flea Market, which is only one mile from our plant. Be sure to stop in to see us if ever in NE Ohio.

Again, thank you Garage Journal Members. This is our favorite forum!

Fred

Fred: awesome post again. i'd love to just pick up the phone and order one of your amazing blast cabinets, but still have my 25 year old twins at home working and finishing up their college. the older 3 kids are all married and getting on with their lives so it's getting closer to us having some real space and some cash again with just the two of us.

i hope to see other posts of yours, but since i'm an old tool guy i'm not sure you venture in the areas i read and post. i did start a golf 101 thread if you were maybe interested in taking up the game if you don't already play. i thought i'd start it because GJ has been so helpful to me over the years and i probably know more about golf than i do about tools and how to use them. stop in the golf 101 thread to post a joke or any questions you might have and hopefully it will be like GJ's 19th hole.

take care and again you developed an awesome product and a business model that can be admired.

Thank you 59 Wagon Man,

Did you know that even though your cabinet and accessories are about 20 years old, if you need any replacement parts, they are always in stock for same day shipment? Made in USA pays off in the end! We have been making abrasive blasting cabinets since 1978 and feel that we offer the best possible value for the money, as well as always providing replacement parts and lifetime technical help on the phone at any time.

We enjoy our friends in the antique car restoration market (and Garage Journal) and love what we do. I am semi-retired and look forward to going to work 3 or 4 days a week to help my son run our family-owned business that I started in the early 1970s in Youngstown. Speaking of work, it is 9 AM and I better get off this computer and get to work right away or I won't get any lunch (I work for food - they buy my lunch).

Our Made in USA Model 979 Cabinet is a really good choice (my favorite cabinet). It comes compete with a nice Vacuum, 2 heavy duty steel doors, 2 lights, foot pedal controlled high velocity power gun with long wearing carbide nozzle and 50# of Skat Magic abrasive. Regular Price: $2299 - Special Price $2199 until 12/31/16. However we are having a Thanksgiving Sale from 11/25 - 11/30. If you enter the promo code WHOL16 you will receive an additional 10% off (even on items on special). This brings the price of the 979 Cabinet down to $1979.10. If you phone in your order, mention the same code number 'WHOL16' to get the price. It might be worth the ten days to order. (Free Shipping most areas east of the Mississippi, reduced freight other areas. Thanks a lot for thinking of us.
