I came across a mostly full, older (about 2 years ) untinted can of Ultra Pure White semi-gloss paint that I wanted to use. Should I take this in to Home Depot to shake first? - I don't know jack about paint chemistry.

Yep, it needs shaking. The pigment settled out of the base latex.

Are you saying that if he shakes a can of untinted white paint it will change colors?

It would be easier to have them shake, but you could shake it a bunch, then open it and stir it a bunch. Just make sure to get all the way to the bottom.

It still took several colors to make it, I'll bet. I've seen the paint store mix fleet white, it has all kinds of colors in it, including a very vibrant violet color.

Why haven't you taken the lid off and had a look?
You should open it and take a look to see what you see.
There's a better than fair chance it is no good.

I'm sorry Dave, I am afraid I can't do that.

I have used paint much older than two years, does it really go bad? I know oil base gets pretty icky, but this is latex right?

If you open a can of paint that has been sitting, no matter what "tint", you will find an inch or two of clear fluid. I'm not a chemist, but something has happened.

I agree that it needs shaking, I thought you were saying the reason it was white was because he hadn't shaken it yet. I understand now, just a little slow on the uptake.

Just interior semi-gloss enamel. it 'looked' okay, and seemed to paint okay after hand shaking, but it seemed a bit thicker. I didn't know if there was various fluid mixtures in it that settles

open the can, if it's not all rusty inside, stir the paint and use it, the newer plastic cans are a bonus
when you stir don't be in a hurry, be sure to scrape the bottom and lift the stick to get anything that may have settled to the bottom
I've used paint way older than 2 years with no issues

OP says "can of Ultra Pure White semi-gloss"

My dad never throws paint away. He has dregs in cans that he bought at a store that went out of business nearly 30 years ago and he still uses them. Amazingly the paint seems fine, the colors are a bit dated though. He just stirs them up with a big screwdriver and away he goes.

Some paints / primers keep better then others, Kilz latex stain blocker will not keep a long time, have 2 1/2 gallons that if my paint mixer can't salvage, it's off to the paint recyclers, ****** State of California charges 75 cents on each gallon of paint for recycling every time I buy paint.:(

To the OP: all paints need to stirred or shaken after sitting for any period of time because of settling/ separation of ingredients, varnishes should only be stirred gently, not shaken.

Ah, so that's were the People's Republic of Konnecitcut got the idea. Supposed to fund recycling centers. Yeah, we'll see when they come.

As far as the paint settling, yes, it will, even latex. Shake or stir, it's up to you. BEFORE you do, however, open the lid and make sure there is no "skin" on the top of the paint. If there is, take it out (preferably in one piece) before mixing.

I had a customer come in the hardware store several years ago, who wanted me to shake his can of paint, then try to computer match the color. From the look of what was left in the can, I think he got it back in Regan's second term. I did manage to get a big enough sample pulled out to shoot it with the computer.

Buy one of these for $4 at Harbor Freight. A cordless drill and the mixing thing makes quick work of stirring paint. I use paint that I have had for 10+ years.
