I have the Mac bwp050 impact and it uses the same batteries as the Dewalt 20v max line. I know Stanley Black and Decker has the 20v max technology in all their brands (Black and Decker, Dewalt, Porter Cable, Mac). Are the 20v max batteries interchangable between all the brands, or just between Mac and Dewalt?

Mac and DeWalt have interchangeable batteries. I have heard of others using Porter Cable and black and decker batteries interchangeably (after cutting the plastic a bit so they fit into each other. My guess is that to use PC or B&D in Mac/DeWalt you would have to trim plastic or maybe even move contacts around. Wouldn't be a direct plug and play.

No, it's more involved than that. If you care to, read the thread I referenced above.

I cut the plastic piece off my porter cable batteries. Now I use porter cable batteries in my black and decker weedwhacker.

Are the Porter-Cable batteries Li-ON "20v Max" batteries that you've got in a 18V B&D tool? I've got a couple 18V B&D tools with no batteries that I'd like to use the newer LiON batteries in. I'm fine with buying the correct charger.

The DeWalt 20V Max batteries are 18V batteries.

Correct. And even if the output was 20V, the circuitry should be able to handle a 10% difference.

But be careful about bringing DeWalt-branded product into the conversation. Dewalt opted to put the required (for LiOn batteries) shut-off circuitry in the tool rather than the battery. That makes Dewalt 20V Max incompatible with B&D/Porter-Cable 20V Max.

So really, the only question in my mind is whether the pin configuration might have changed between B&D 18V and B&D 20V Max. I suspect the answer is "no", but apparently the pins were moved for the Stanley-branded 20V FatMax line, at least according to "Brian" in this message thread...
