The thread is for discussion and education on how to get clearance deals at Home Depot. For actual current deals, visit the HD clearance thread here: http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=277228

Home Depot regular clearances out it's merchandise that makes for some really good deals...and if you are lucky, you can even score merchandise for a penny. Remember that everything mentioned below are general guidelines. There are sometimes anomalies that sometimes deviate from the norm.

Markdown Schedule:

Every HD store runs clearance sales throughout the year. But the markdown schedule seems to vary between stores, and vary between regions. The markdowns follow this general pattern:

First level markdown: **.00 or **.06 or sometimes **.04

This is the first markdown level. If the price ends in .00, the actual discount off of the regular retail price is usually not that great. If the price ends in .06 or .04, the discount is greater, but still not very significant. For example if an item has regular retail price of $100, at this stage of the clearance the markdown might only be a few dollars.

Some have speculated that the last number in the price (6 or 4) indicates the the item will drop down to the second clearance level pricing in about 6 weeks or 4 weeks. However, this is just a very rough estimate. I have seen items $**.06 items drop to the second clearance level in less than 6 weeks. I have also seen **.06 items that have not dropped further in price for over 1 year

Second level markdown: **.03 or **.02

After a certain number of weeks at the first level, clearance items drop down to this stage. This clearance level is roughly 75% off the regular retail price. So if the item was originally priced at around $100, it will now be $25.03 (or $25.02). Again, the last number in the price roughly indicates the amount of time it will stay at that price (3 weeks or 2 weeks respectively).

This clearance level is officially supposed to be the last clearance price. If the item does not sell after a certain number of days/weeks, the store associates are supposed to remove it from the shelves and either donate it to charity, return it to the vendor, trash/destroy it, or make some sort of free promotion give away (credit card signup for example)

This level of discount is significant and usually provides a good value that beats any other store's pricing. So if you are really interested in the particular item, I suggest purchasing at this stage. However, if you are intent on maximizing the deal, read further.

Penny deal status: 00.01

Once an item remains unsold for a certain number of days/weeks at the 2nd markdown stage, the inventory system automatically drops the price of that item to $00.01. At this point, store employees are supposed to remove the item from the shelves as I stated above. However, this does not always happen immediately. In fact, items can sometimes remain on the shelves for days before a store employee actually does remove it from the shelves. This means that if you find such an item, it will scan at $00.01 at checkout, which means you just got a penny deal!

Furthermore, discounted/penny items are often found stocked high up in the rafters. These items could remain there for days and weeks unnoticed. Use the in-store computer to identify such items (more info below)

How to find clearance items

Method 1: Use the in-store computer kiosks

Most every HD has computer kiosks located in numerous departments within the store (windows/doors, flooring, appliances etc) as well as in the front of the store at the "Pro Desk". These computers have a section for public access. Within that section there is a "price check" app. You can use the app to find clearance items/inventory at your store. Simply enter a key word in the search box (Dremel, mower, Husky, Dewalt, etc). All the results matching that key word will appear. Simply click on the filter icon on the upper left hand side, then click on the "clearance" button. The results will further filter down to all the clearance items for that keyword. Make a list of the items you are interested in, and note down the last digit of the clearance price (as mentioned above) to determine markdown schedule.

Method 2: Pay attention to date printed on yellow clearance tags.

Often, store employees fail to update the clearance yellow tags to correctly reflect the current markdown price (as mentioned above). But most yellow clearance tags have a date printed on it. This can provide you with clue regarding the actual price of the item. The older the date on the tag is, the more likely that it has dropped further in price than the price indicated on the tag. For example, a $100 price tag with a date of 9/1/2014 could very well have dropped to $25.03 or even $0.01 at this point.

I'll post what I have copied on Notepad for people who keep asking me, just in case anything was missed by HomeDepotRob:

You have to use the in-store computer. There's usually one at either the Pro Desk or Customer Service that is facing out for customers to use.

Minimize everything on the screen, then you'll see all the apps on the desktop. Open the app called "Price Check".

From there, you can search for anything, such as by SKU number. What I do is search for brands or tool categories, such as "Dewalt" or "Drill". After everything loads, there's a button on top for "Refine Results" or "Filter Results". Click that, then inside there is a button for "Clearance Items". After you click that, click the button for "Go Back to Results".

Now you'll see all of the clearance items for whatever you searched for. You'll have to click an item to open it to see how many are supposedly in stock.

The items to look for have a price ending with a 3 or a 2, such as "$13.03" or "$5.02". These are usually about 75% off. Items with a price ending in 6 or 4 are about 25% off.

After you find something, you start the scavenger hunt. Rarely are these deals located on the shelf where they should be. Sometimes they are in a designated clearance section, sometimes they will be up high in the rafters. You'll have to look around to find it. The best thing to do if it's in the rafters is to know exactly what model number and SKU number you're looking for. Most items in the rafters have a SKU number sticker on it or have it written on the box with marker.

As far as penny items, they are hard to find. The only way to know if an item is a penny item is to take it to self checkout, press the button for "Price Check", then scan it. Penny items are items from the .03 and .02 clearance levels that have been sitting around for weeks longer. As far as the time it takes to reach penny status from .03 or .02 seems to vary between stores. Some take a few weeks, some take a few months.

Rob -

You forgot to add the details on how to stash them in rubbermaid containers, hide them in in the rolls of the carpet section, etc. LOL

I don't approve of those actions...but yes certainly people should look in those hidden areas to discover hidden items because I have seen people stash things away like that.

Some people have met resistance from cashiers who try to prevent customers from purchasing penny items. However, it is corporate policy that if a customer finds a penny item, the customer is entitled to purchase that penny item. If your store is giving you problems, just show them this email:

"Hello Mr. xxxxx,

I am sorry for the troubles you've experienced at your local Home Depot
store. I can understand how frustrating this was for you, and I will be
more than happy to address this matter.

With regards to your concerns, once our items have been "clearanced
out", they will show in our system at a price of $0.01. As part of the
Clearance process, the store associate should remove all items marked
down to $0.01. However, there are times when an item is accidentally
left on the shelf. If a customer finds one of these items and brings it
to the register, they will be able to purchase it for $0.01.

To better assist you, please provide the exact store location and the
model or 6 digit SKU number for the product you're seeking to purchase.
Once obtained, I will partner with the store's management team for
further assistance.

I will follow up with you on 6/24/15 to confirm the necessary
information. If you have any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to contact me via reply to this email.

Thank you for your patience in this matter and thank you for choosing
The Home Depot.

Sincerely,

Andrea Holliman

Since I have seen many people state... "I went into my Homedepot and all the yellow tag items I found had really high prices" or "my Homedepot never has things marked down"

The yellow stickers do not automatically update themselves when the computer system changes the price of the clearance item, it takes an employee to do so.

If the employee cannot find said item or is not pressured to find said items by his boss then these clearance items will remain unmarked or incorrectly marked until someone buys them.

In other words, you cannot trust the price on the label, any good deal I have ever found has had the incorrect price on the yellow tag or no yellow tag.

I thought only their employees did that. I found a few things at Lowe's like that.

It won't always be .03 before it hits a penny. Sometimes it will be .X3 but as long as its 3 cents at the end of the price and on clearance it will hit a penny in the next 3 weeks.
Some stores drop to a penny on Mondays but its really random.

If you know something is a penny item I would recommend using self checkout. The penny item status is viewed differently at different stores. Self checkout avoids finding out.

Also check behind the tile pallets. When I was employed by a large home improvement store and wore orange I did an inventory cleanout overnight for a few months. We found tons of penny items. A bunch we tossed (who wants 3 pieces of broken tile) but the good stuff we would claim. You couldnt run the registers overnight so I would pull a pallet of tile out, put the item behind it and push it back. Next day come in, grab the pallet jack and get the item. I figured it made up for the lack of an employee discount.

**** I didn't want but wasn't horrible enough to toss I would put on the clearance racks. Unfortunately the front end manager saw that stuff as unsellable so only the savvy customers got it. I coached people when I could

Lots of thin-skinned weasels ITT. HD Rob did nothing scandalous other than provide honest info. Those bashing him need to get a life. I'm quite sure people like that make everyone around them miserable.

Jesus you guys are unbelievable. Can there ever be a thread on here without someone getting a "little ****" complex? This thread needs locked and stickied before it gets even more out of hand.

I agree it should be stickied but the lock needs to come at a later time after more helpful info has been added and all the other BS filtered out.

Is there any guidance on DNI items? Are customers allowed to purchase them? Also, has anyone come across an old version of an item that is discontinued and a new version of an item having the same SKU?

You got that right. I called someone out recently who was complaining, but not once did he post a single deal in the 135 pages of the HD 2015 clearance thread.

Anyway, how do we get a mod to sticky this thread?

Thanks for posting that. I've been scouting the HD's around here the past couple days (I've got the week off work and get bored just sitting at home), but didn't know much about the clearance stuff. I don't necessarily want to haul a cart full of stuff up to the self checkout just to check the prices.

So the computer available to customers will show the price of the item as it would scan at the register?

Thanks Rob and other contributors. Great explanation of the process. I hate to say it, but maybe the hot deals thread should be moved under free parking. That way only registered users can access and see not only the deals and info but the sniping of members towards each other.

Anyways, thanks again. :)

Sorry if this has been covered, but doesn't the guy at the counter ( girl too) get weird about a customer saying excuse me while I bop around in your computer that is portrayed to be for store use only? I'm sure I would get someone asking if I needed something. When I said show me all the penny deals, well... I could see that not ending too well.
