Looking for ideas for an outboard motor stand for storage and maintenance. I have a wooden one, with motor in storage. It has casters and there is room for a twenty gallon trash bin to hold water when test running. I'd like to build a nice one from some 1x2 tubing or some angle iron.

My OB is a Honda 9.9hp long shaft, and is used to power my sailboat in and out of the harbor. It's an older model, but runs like a champ and even has the charging plug for the 12v house battery..

I chopped up an old 2 wheel dolly to make one. That way it can be moved around easily (70's 50hp). There are a bunch of plans on the web.

Yea, I know how to do a search fine, was wondering if any GJ'r had done something in metal. Most are shown in wood, but thanks for the link.

I did find an old plan that used pipe, so might try it, but converting it to square or rectangular tubing. I want to have a nice one, and do a real weld project ... no bed frame material for this one

Here is a link to the PDF. To big to upload.

I wasn't being a smart a$$ but there were some pretty slick ones shown. Not sure what search engine you used so I just posted it.

It's all good ...

Most plans for stands are made of wood. Not to many metal ones.

Have made several,,,I think the easiest and fastest way is just goto harbor freight and by an engine stand usually get it from between 30-40 bucks

hit a yard sale or 2 and get an old 2 wheel manual golf cart, have seen those turned into outboard stands a few times over the years in various mags...

I just built one 40 minutes ago. Got tired of man handling the heavy *****.

2 x 2 tubing of various thicknesses. The motor perch is 2 x 4. I used some light weight castles I had left over from a shop stool that died years ago. I think it took me an hour. I may or may not paint it.

I made it wide enough for 2 motors as well as room to fit a 55 gallon drum for test running.

I've made a lot of stands in the past for smaller antique outboards. With yours, I wouldn't start from scratch because of the weight, shaft length. As others have suggested, I would convert a dolly or stand to fit your needs.

Yea, but it'll be a fun project. If I can do a good job, I'll be rebuilding my trailer by moving the axle back about 18".

What did you cut those 45 angles with?

I like this one, it allows you to tip the engine up to work on the lower unit!

Started my little project. Using 1x2", 1x1.5", and 1x1" tubing. Going to be about 30" long, 24" wide and 32" tall. Uprights are at a 5 deg angle which should bring the motor to a full upright position.

Welds are looking OK, I think ... except I found out that going up hill is way different then going down hill ( #5 and #7). Still having issues with seeing and putting the puddle on the joint. But I think I found a solution with a bright overhead light.

Couple more images ...

First image is the issue of not seeing the joint and not running the bead the full length.

At least I can tell when I f' it up ... most times anyway.

Almost done ... need to grind a few welds down and redo, but the basic shape is there.

Last picture is what I'm replacing.

I have a couple made out of aluminum for smaller outboards, I'll have to post a pic once I get home.

Almost done. Need to finish tabs to hold wooden transom, add wheels, and add a push handle. Might add some bracketing to keep tub in place ... but need motor mounted first.

So on the wheels ... weld them on, or bolt them on?
