We’ve always been fans and lurkers on the Garage Journal, so we thought… let’s put our own facility on here as it comes together. I hope you guys enjoy!

25 years in the making, AWE Tuning had out performed its current space, and needed to move on up to a deluxe space roughly 3x current.

For those unfamiliar, we’re a performance engineering firm with the vision of unlocking additional performance from European cars: designing, engineering, manufacturing, marketing and distributing performance upgrades. Our growth of late has allowed us to buy and build our dream “garage” - More space to grow our Audi, BMW, Porsche, VW and McLaren lines, with room to progress down the road ahead. More space, more performance.

After location hunting for a year, we landed on a space that is fittingly located on Precision Drive. How cool is that.

Here’s our first “teaser” that our move was coming to our market:

The chronicle

We documented almost every step of the build out (kind of like we do for some of our R&D cars) - here’s the journey!

The Space

We didn’t just pick any old building when moving, we had a list of must-haves that was longer than… well it was long. We finally landed on a ~32,000 sq-ft building. It had the space, location, and some great other features that we were after, like tons of loading docks and space for our expanding team.

mapshot.png

We loved the already existing massive garage door entrance, great for no-worries car entrance.

AWE_6075.jpg

And since 95% of what AWE Tuning builds goes out on a truck every day to dealers in over 75 countries 3 new loading docks are going to be a welcomed change for our shipping department and UPS/Fed-Ex alike.
Walls, lifts, machines, and more coming soon below!

Next, we’re going to start knocking down walls.

Demolition

After what seemed like ages, we were ready to begin construction, but first we had to get rid of a few things (well, everything). So we sent in professionals that perform like we do. In mere days they had removed the old to make way for the new. One step closer to more performance. Trying not to make this an ad, but big shout out to Mid Atlantic Construction.

Construction

Now that the fun part is nearing completion (knocking stuff down), we got started on the exciting part (putting stuff up).

More Construction
Things moving right along. New windows and rooms, and offices beginning to take shape. What you’re looking at here is the soon-to-be “R&D” corridor which will house all of the engineering lifts with a big fat pass through for the 3-D Scanner to flow between the cars and the engineering stations in the office area.

The space is well lit - sunlight = inspiration. Lots of skylights throughout.

AWE_6278.jpg

And new windows galore, taking what was a big box to a big box with light!

It’s getting hot in here.

Insulation time.

Power Pit

Dynamometer time.

We’ll be doing a specially engineered dyno cell, which will go around the dyno, with a window right from the waiting area so any visitors can watch the “Moment of Truth.”

Walls and more walls.

At this stage, so many elements were entering the final stages of construction.
Here’s a shot of our shipping and receiving office, right on the floor to keep an eye on things.

It’s a front.

Our new showroom and front desk area taking shape. Comfy couches, fast cars, and great coffee coming soon!

White out

Paint time. We’re starting with almost everything white so we can easily make on-brand color decisions (pops) once we’re in.

Let there be light.

AWE_7719.jpg

A major upgrade from not only the existing lights in the building (which seemed to be candle burning), but the lights in our current building too. These fluorescent fixtures produce a much brighter and whiter light; a welcome change to the dingy yellow-orange cast of the previous light fixtures. This is a straight shot view down where the new manufacturing line will be as things progress.

Enter the seal!

Time to seal it up. Below is a view from the back of the future R&D area up to the extra wide vehicle entrance, and more.

Taking Shape

Starting to look like the next chapter in AWE Tuning. Offices taking their final form, and our showroom getting a brand new garage door, tile flooring and giant windows all the way across.

Entrance and Showroom windows installed. There’s going to be a cool “AWE Tuning Red” cover over the main door near where the discolored block is, to protect from the elements.

AWE_7822.jpg

This area below to house our sales and marketing teams, full open collaboration layout including open meeting areas.

AWE_7842.jpg

Directly across from the sales & marketing area will be the research and engineering team, including the prototyping team. One of the challenges in our current space is a long walk between the departments. Our goal with the open layout was to increase immediate communication to speed time-to-market and innovation. Engineering area seen here:

AWE_7843.jpg

Another must-have for us was to ensure that everyone came together at least once a day in a central chill-zone. That’s this below. A cafe-meets-break-room-meets-collaboration space, this section will be stocked with comfy seating, high-tops, a kitchen, and outdoor access. Most importantly, it’s a place for everyone to meet, whether they’ve been typing or welding all day.

AWE_7847.jpg

A view of the showroom from the soon to be reception desk. Room for cars, people and comfort.

AWE_7854.jpg

The glass garage door will allow visitors to see into the R&D area from the showroom, and also allow for easy placement of cars into the showroom without driving outside first.

AWE_8118.jpg

View of some of our the offices, including extra windows up top to ensure maximum natural light.

Additional offices and break out rooms:

AWE_8136.jpg

She’s coming together!

Right around the corner.

Our official move date is fast approaching, and with that our building isn’t just starting to look like our new home, it is our new home. As you’re reading this portions of the company are shuttling everything they need to the new space. Over the new couple weeks the entire company will slowly funnel into the new state-of-the-art facility.

Holy shiny. This is the new R&D area. Prototyping / R&D lifts coming soon.

AWE_8336.jpg

Peering into the showroom from installations and prototyping. There will be a clear line of sight from the showroom into where the magic happens.

AWE_8340.jpg

Below, our new showroom getting the finishing touches. It’s about 600hp and a sofa away from being home.

AWE_8347.jpg

Bathrooms on the left, looking back into the offices, our marketing and sales departments right up front in an open and collaborative environment.

AWE_8355.jpg

One of the new conference rooms - will be outfitted with a big (really big) monitor and we’re in the midst of finishing a custom conference room table.

AWE_8350.jpg

The new home of the finance team.

AWE_8352.jpg

Quick access for our engineering team to the installations and prototyping area. Note tile runway for the FARO arm - this was an important feature as the team is frequently rolling between “cars and CAD” and the ‘arm is a key member of the R&D team.

AWE_8356.jpg

The new engineering team area - open, well lit and ready for an easy flow between marketing, sales and this department.

AWE_8360.jpg

Referenced earlier, one of our favorite areas, the “cafe,” which will be a central location for all fabrication, engineering, sales, marketing, finance, prototyping, shipping and admin to come together for food, breaks and collaboration.

AWE_8362.jpg

Soon, you might even see some furniture! Thanks for following along with us, stay tuned as we update with decor and start to “make it home.”

Research and Development Developments.

Our brand new R&D area is getting the finishing touches. A quick shot of three of the five lifts that will make up the “lab” - in close proximity to the engineering offices (just on the other side of the wall on the left).

AWE_8377.jpg

And below, this is the “runway” for our FaroArm between the lifts and the Engineering offices, to ensure speedy scanning-to-conception.

More to come!

Living the dream! Only suggestion I have is to paint those posts if you're going to drive cars in that space. White posts on a white background can blend in easily, and before you know McLaren will rub up against it :eeek:

Very cool! Fun to see your business grow like this. I had a 1.8t Jetta that had a tune on it that came from y'all. Might have been GIAC... I forget more than I remember.

Anyhow, congrats on the new space and buildout!

We’re in!

It’s official. We’re in our new space! The entire AWE Tuning organization is now in our brand new state-of-the-art facility at 199 Precision Drive, Horsham, PA 19044.

Still a ton of work to be accomplished to make it feel and look like home, but as of today:
  • Fabrication is in place and producing at 100%
  • Engineering is R&D’ing
  • Marketing is writing stuff like this
  • Sales is selling
  • Finance is adding and subtracting (and multiplying and occasionally dividing)
  • Prototyping is fitting
  • Shipping is loading
In other words, this battle ship is fully operational.

We’re still working hard on the facility so stay tuned as she keeps coming together!

So awesome, I'm definitely dropping by to get a tour next time I'm up to visit my parents.

Oh, and stop screwing around with the new facility and get my intake for the F80 done!

I believe that is THE Mike Romano.

That indeed is Mr. Romano, who is still here, but the shop in that
photo is our third one in Chestnut Hill. We moved in there in 1998.

This is a photo of where it all started, in 1991:

Very nice, and welcome to the GJ. Since I'm not familiar with your business, I have a question for you. I, and others on here really like to know where you are located? It might be to your advantage to put that in your avatar.
My other question is, do you have any decals/stickers for my tool box??
How long have you been in business? are you the ceo, or president of AWE?
The new shop really is beautiful and should be great to work in. I'm sure all the employee's will be happy having a first class facility. Maybe you already mentioned it, but I was wondering how many employee's work there, and what are the plans in the future for growth? Thanks. Herb

You're facility is amazing. Not to take away from other businesses but it really presents well when that much thought is put into the business as a whole.

Hi all,

I'm the president of AWE Tuning. I started the company in 1991 after touring North America in a 71 VW Westfalia. It was just supposed to be a summer trip, but after blowing up the engine in British Columbia two weeks into it, me and my buddy spent a year travelling between short working stints to earn money.

A year on the road with a 71 Westy meant a lot of wrenching. After somehow finding myself back where I started (SE PA), I decided to see if I could make a living from it. In the beginning, I was doing basic repairs and trying my hand at "restorations." That is indeed a 67 Bug in the left bay of that garage (a converted horse stable with no running water and a single 110V outlet), and a 72 Ghia in the middle. The fenders on the right belong the Bug. After all was said and done, I found I didn't have the patience to be a restorer, and set my sights on building a speed shop. Over the next few years, I was able to slowly weed out the repair and retso work to focus solely on water cooled VW performance work, doing everything from cam installs to full engine builds and transplants.

By 1998, I was in my third shop, 2500sf, with 3 lifts, 3 employees, and a 2WD chassis dyno. By 2001, I had decided to dabble in manufacturing, as years in the trenches led me to believe that I could make a better mousetrap than what we had been installing for clients. We started small batch manufacturing of exhausts, intakes, turbo kits, shifters, etc., and things started to really take off when we moved into a 10k sf facility in 2002.

Through testing different business models, over the years we've morphed into a bolt-on premium hardware manufacturer: intakes, intercoolers, and exhausts for VW, Audi, BMW, Porsche, and McLaren. We have mechanical engineers on staff to design and test the products (and sometimes even for our own manufacturing equipment), prototypers to execute the prototypes and fixtures, manufacturing staff to reproduce the products in volume, sales staff to support of worldwide dealer network, marketing staff to tell the world about our products, and a shipping staff to box it all up and ship it all out. And last but not least, a finance staff to make sure it is all generating proper margins, so we can keep the lights on. 35 people in all so far in a 32k sf building (and we are hiring!).

I acquired the property this time round, instead of leasing, so to do a build-out of this scale in a building we own is truly a dream come true for me.

Thanks for reading, and for the kind words.
