The patent Date was April 16th,1958 and the invention was a new and improved tool handle that can withstand greater torque when turning screws.

The original assignee was the Bridgeport Hardware Mfg. Corp and I am assuming that the name "PRIDE" must have been assigned to that screwdriver line. (Some new facts perhaps for the AA web-site).

Enjoy the pictures it is the only one I ever came across in all my many years of hunting tools.

I've always liked the design, especially for removing stubborn slotted screws without damaging the heads.
The patent app claims a 50% increase in torque for the same applied effort. Seems to me it might be true.
The square shank also allows application of a wrench for even more torque.

But my favorite quote from the patent is this:
"Screw drivers are invariably used for many purposes other than that for which they are designed.
The most common (is) employing the screw driver as a cold chisel wherein it is often hammered.
Therefore, the sleeve must expose the end of the hard body, otherwise a hammer blow would cause the hammer to fly up into the face of the user.
"

I'm thinking that last bit may have come to light during product testing.
