New garage going up in Texas Hill country

First of all thanks for including me on this site I am sure that I will be getting some great ideas from you all for my own build.

I custom designed this garage to look like an old gas station and here are some in process pictures along with the original drawings that I did - today is day six of the main structure build.

There was an old shed where the new building is going up and being that it is 16 x 15 there abouts I made a concerted effort to get it moved to a new site so I could still use it.

I jacked up the building and built a sled out of treated 4 x 4 timbers and made a deal with the contractor to move it for free. He moved the building and I traded that for three big century/agave plants that I was going to rip out anyway.

So it was a good deal for me. Better to have all that stuff in the shed as opposed to my garage.

New building floor plan - the rec area - another word for bar.

More steel went up today mainly getting the soffit backing in place and beginning work on the party pad off of the bar.

That house that you see in the background is not our place our house is actually behind me in all of the pictures. That is our new neighbor to the east of us.

This is a picture of the front of our place the garage is being built to the back side of the house to the right of this picture.

Our old house had a capacity for ten cars and moving into this place which has more property but only has a three stall garage and that was just not cutting it with the herd that we have.

Drives, I posted some comments and pictures on my introduction page per your question on the Mueller building.

Ok more progress yesterday most of the windows are in and today they will be finished and then the skin and insulation starts to go up.

A few pictures to share.

Tex: i'd say that ALL the members would love to see that set up you helped design for the race team so you have my (their's too i'm sure) to post up all those pictures here on this thread that you just posted on the intro thread if you have a few minutes. as you have seen on many of the build threads the thread doesn't end with the build so posting pictures of some of your other projects is always a good thing. very cool pics BTW

here's the post you made about the steel framing that i'm sure a lot of members who don't visit the introduction threads would like to see.

"Good call on the supplier of material for my build, I chose to go with Mueller after looking at a lot of other suppliers and realized I could build it for less but I do not think the quality of materials was there with other suppliers. Mueller does not build the building they just supply the materials and then you can either build it yourself or use one of their network contractors. I had initially thought I would go with a stick building but went this way instead and all being said the price is about the same and this will hold up better in the long run."

your Mueller framing looks awesome and i love the door sitting in place already.

cheers and good luck with the roof and rest of the shop build.

Drives, Here are those pictures from the other posting.

Thanks for the compliments on this garage it truly was the traveling garagemahal!

Speaking of my sig and garages I took that picture a few years back when I was working for an ALMS team and I did design development for their equipment and garages. One of my first jobs there was to give their road garage a facelift.

Here are some pictures starting with what the garage looked like when I first joined the team and some of my CAD design work and then the first build along with some race setups. It was the best setup in North America no doubt. The doors are carbon fiber frames with a lexan window pane. This took about six hours to assemble at every race which was a pain in the *** but it looked cool as all hell!

Tex: i'm kicking up your thread because i want to let others find your great build. also to see what you designed for the race team.

take lots of pictures of your build even if it's just attaching walls because I (we) all like seeing the nuts and bolts of a build. especially one that some of us might want to copy some day.

hope you had a great weekend

Do those Tudor series race teams use Racedeck?

I saw a ton of teams using a Racedeck type product up at the Oak Tree GP @ VIR last weekend.

We used the Racetrack system both in the mobile garages and back at the main shop. And while it looks cool as all hell the mechanics hated it as it is not the most comfortable flooring to kneel or lay on. Actually it pretty much hurts like hell on the knees.

Here is a picture from our incident at the Baltimore Grand Prix I think there is enough carbon fiber laying there to just about pay for all of the steel on my garage. I can say this the car was totaled as the tub was compromised and had to be replaced so with that kind of money I could have built three of these building that I am not building - maybe even four......

I cannot speak for the what the rest of the teams use at the track but this is what we used. We only ran one or two races when everything got switched over to the TUDOR league there were several factors for us withdrawing from the season. But if you will remember the 2014 24 hours of Daytona we won the race and then that win was taken back and about five hours later we were given the win but by then the fans were gone and it was somewhat an empty victory.

This was one of the Ferrari that we got in prior to the new league at the end of the ALMS series. It was a little like Christmas to unwrap this baby.

Looking back on the 2014 24 hours of Daytona

2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona a 'finish for the ages' in GT-Daytona.

As the 2015 sports car season closes in and teams prepare once again to flock to “The World Center of Racing” for the Rolex 24 At Daytona, we take a look back at Level 5’s historic victory in one of the world’s most coveted endurance races.

The finish to the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona was a finish for the ages without a doubt. After some of the most dramatic closing laps in the history of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Level 5 Motorsports emerged victorious in the GTD class -- eventually.

It was the team’s debut race for its new Ferrari customer program, and just weeks after receiving the cars, drivers Scott Tucker, Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, Jeff Segal and Alessandro Pier Guidi took the No. 555 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 to Gatorade Victory Lane in the highly competitive GT Daytona (GTD) class, which was stacked with a 29-car starting field.

Drives, I was not exactly the size to fit in one of the P2 cars it takes someone with a much smaller build than I to fit into them. Nor do I own one of these as much as I would like to it is well outside of my pay grade. But with that said I was able to be part of the team for the last year of ALMS and that in itself was a very cool experience.

Wow. Amazing race team setup and loving the garage. Are the garage doors going to be glass like the old gas station shops? I always loved those types of doors.

Looking forward to this one.

Back to progress on the build now.

Since I last posted we have made some big gains in assembly and started on some of the wiring out in the carport area and the bar's party pad. The thing with wiring on a steel building is kind of pain in the *** as it is much easier to drill through wood any day plus you really need to use conduit in areas where the wires cross through the steel.

But as you can see it is all coming together nicely I am very happy with the materials from Mueller as the more people I talk to the more horror stories I hear from other companies materials. And seeing how we live in an area prone to hail storms the thicker steel from Mueller should hold up much better.

Wow. Amazing race team setup and loving the garage. Are the garage doors going to be glass like the old gas station shops? I always loved those types of doors.

Looking forward to this one.

The front doors will be glass doors but they will be frosted the side door on the party deck will be clear insulated glass and the large door on the back is a ten by ten roll up door for air flow in the shop and then the smaller door on the back will be a standard steel garage door.

Yes that is five garage doors on this one building.

The glass doors are pricey but they will look very cool

Also in regards to the doors.

I purchased them from ETO doors and they were by far the best price I could find with a good quality to the materials and the finished product. They were also very good to work with on this project.

The side door will follow the angle of the roof and the front doors will go pretty much straight up to the 15 foot ceiling and then level off I did not want doors in the way should I put another lift in at the front of the garage.

Link to their web site.

Tex: instead of drilling holes for all the wiring and conduit have you considered surface mounting the conduit with wires in it?

Awesome pictures of the racing cars and stories too.

keep posting pictures of garage, race cars or whatever you like while we all enjoy watching your build.

since you said that the car cost about 5 of your garages i'm wondering what your garage is going to cost. i was thinking in the $100,000 range, but with you adding nicer doors and the size of it i could be way off.

cheers and again thanks for the pictures and stories

I did consider conduit but I am looking to keep the look very clean and uncluttered so I am running the wires through the steel tubes and behind all of the steel. In the end the finished product will look much better.

When all is said and done I will have spent more than I wanted that much is certain. But anything worth doing, is worth doing right.

Mayhem,

I'm looking forward to seeing how your project progresses! It looks like it'll be a good sized space and I'm interested in seeing the special touches you incorporate into it, especially after seeing the sweet portable track-side space you designed for Level-5!

BTW, I have a friend that is pictured in your previous post (Road Atlanta). Maybe we can all meet one day!

Thanks Don

So who is it that you know from the pic? Randy, Mike, Bob, Louis, Ken, JF, Jason inquiring minds want to know????? Since we are both in Hill country I am sure we can meet up sometime. A good friend from back at the shop up north now lives in the Austin area and is running the shop at Moorspeed. Maybe just have you over to see the shop in person.

Shoot me a PM of the person as I am curious now.

More pictures to come kids!

Gorgeous building!! Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks much Morio. Coming from you I will take that as a huge compliment as I just read through 17 pages of your build and I am impressed!!!! That is a very nice place you all have there I understand the whole wanting to get away from Austin and civilization as we did that exact same thing back in March of this year.

I also see that you live not far from us, we are in Spicewood and while we live in an HOA it is very laid back and we all have our space here with a 15 acre minimum and all respect each others privacy.

The building has been moving along well but I will be doing all of the interior work myself so that will not go as quick as the exterior has.

Thanks again and hope to meet up with you some time
