Garage Door Opening is too Small How to Enlarge

We just got into our new home with a perfect 2 car garage 24X28 detached. Only issue is that the physical opening is not tall enough for my Truck to fit. We are in Fairbanks AK so this will be a requirement to be able to get it in the garage before the winter hits.

What is going to be the easiest solution to making the physical opening taller? There is currently about 6 to 8 inches between the tracks and the ceiling, so from my in experience I would raise the tracks as high as I can, cut the opening larger and install a new header, reinstall the trim and then replace one of the garage door panels with a larger panel to make up the difference.

Anyone have any experience or have done this before? I am going to get ahold of a contractor on monday and see if I can get an estimate of what it would cost to do. The other option is I just do it myself, how difficult would it be?

Looks quite possible. You should easily be able to raise the bottom of the header to the same plane as the bottom of the adjacent trusses. The header is holding itself up more than anything.

there's not much weight on that header, so it should be easy to raise it.

Ayuh,.... Cut the anchor bolts, jack up the whole garage, throw in a row of blocks, 'n set the garage back down,....

The door will be 8" higher,....

Need 16", go 2 courses of blocks,...

I'll be lucky when I get to raise mine. A few owners ago, the guy was a semi mechanic. My garage was built deep and tall. Owners before me converted it back to 8 foot height. I should have no issue with adding another panel. The header, etc. is all still there.

I don't see where the OP said the roof was trusses. If it is a truss roof then there should not be a load bearing header on the gable end and it should be easy to raise the door opening at least a few inches. But then you then need to make the door fit an odd size opening.

Im have tried to do some research on garage doors but have come up empty, does anyone know if garage door panels come in different heights or are they all the same? Would it be possible to get just a single panel of the same design but 6-8 inches taller than the rest?

Brand of current door?
Number of sections?

7 feet high - Typically 4 sections high
8 feet high - Typically 5 sections high

Make the truck a low boy and it would be a lot cheaper than doing anything to the garage. Plus it would make it a lot easier for wife and kids to get into the truck.

Actually it would be a lot more to change the height of the truck, and thats not happening, its perfect. The Power steps already make it very easy to get in.
