My New Garage (Motorcycle Garage)

My wife and I moved into our new house in early August. I finally got my double car garage!!!!! Since we moved in I have come a long way in getting the garage where I want it. The garage already had drywall but the tape/mud work was bad. Here is how it looked when we moved in.

Its hard to tell in the pictures but the walls needed a lot of sanding and mud work to get them ready for the fresh paint.

Once we had the wall in a good spot it was time to paint. White walls and ceiling to keep it bright.

After the walls were done I replaced all the plugs and switches. I also installed 4 100W LED bright white bulbs. The lighting is awesome. The light is there instantly with no warm up time and no flickering like fluorescent lights and each buld only draws 17W.

It's getting there...

I built the new bench to sit between the tool boxes like a floating design. Nice clean look and no legs to get in the way. Eventually there will be a metal top on it but that can wait.

Over this past weekend I was able to get the next step done in designing/building the garage. I wanted to do stripes around the whole garage. I knew that I would need to rent a laser level to shoot the lines around the walls but first I had to find the paint in the colour I wanted. My goal was fluorescent red. A friend of mine told me to look for Liquitex spray paint because they sold it in fluorescent colours. Once I got the paint I had to get it done before the weather got to cold. So here it is...

Note: you can see the lights in this picture. There is another twin bulb setup in the higher part of the ceiling.

The remaining plans include a metal bench top, COTA track map painted on the wall, racedeck pad for under the bikes and something for the floor. Like a bike build I will probably come up with more as I go but for now that's the plan.

I'm really enjoying your build richzuki. That COTA cutout just trips my trigger. VERY cool. I'm not a bike guy but it looks like you have a pretty good setup going on there. Those stripes are badass!

Thanks guys. I am happy with how it's coming alone so far. The COTA cut out is being replaced buy a larger version painted on the wall. I meant to bring a projector home from work today but I forgot so it will have to wait.

The walls look really nice! I know you mentioned Racedeck for under the bikes, but what are you planning for the floor? Epoxy would with flakes would look really nice, but would require a lot of prep work.

Thanks James. I am not sure about the floor. I would love to do an epoxy floor coating I am just concerned about not doing good enough prep work and the floor not turning out well. It's not something I have every done. I have also heard that a lot of the DIY kits don't last well and that you are better off having someone come in and do it but that gets pricey. Whatever I decide to do, it won't be until next spring at the earliest.

Garage is looking good so far. What speedway silhouette is that hanging on the wall, in the earlier pictures?

As for the floor, it looks like your s in pretty good condition already, and a good candidate for epoxy. Don't be intimidated by the DIY kits, they're pretty easy. With the condition of your floor, it'll be very easy to get it where it needs to be, to cover with epoxy. There's some pros o nhere that have one objective: sell you their high-dollar kits. I can assure you that those are nice products, but great results can be reached with the DIY kits from Home Depot and Menard's. I bought mine about eight years ago, and it's holding up just fine.

The most critical part (like so many other projects), is in the preparation. I swept mine out, wet it down, and scrubbed the begeezus out of it, then scrubbed it with muriatic acid, rinsed it down several times, and dried it with a couple fans. Then rinsed it out again a couple more times, and repeated the with the fans again. Once I got it to the point that I could swipe my hand across it, and have no white residue on my fingers, then it was good to go. Just be sure to use fans and plenty of ventilation while you apply the epoxy. With my DIY kit, they said I could use one coat, but when that was done, it was very obvious that it really needed a second coat.

I highly recommend it, it will be the single-most improvement to your garage.

Small update: I did look around a bit online and I found tracksculptures and I like the products but I wanted to go BIG with the track map. Last weekend I borrowed a projector from work and shot the image up on the wall. I traced it out with pencil and made sure I had the complete outline. Yesterday I was able to get the track painted. I don't have the steadiest hand but I am happy with how it turned out. The overall design is about 8' x 3.5'.

Thanks Wanna Ride for the advice. I am leaning towards an epoxy floor. I am going to do some research over the winter and hopefully I can make it happen in the spring. We'll see.

Couple small update:

My wife and I just had our 2nd little boy so life has been busy and sleepless, IE not much time in the shop.

For Christmas I got some things for the garage. My wife got me gifts cards to use for the garage. I have thought about doing a mat or carpet for the bike lift for a while. After talking to ekraft84 I have gone with a black rubber mat. It will help protect the lift top as well as make cleanups easier and help stop tools from rolling off the lift. Here is how the lift started.

Oh and of course I had help. My little guy jumped at the chance to work in the garage with Dad.

On the front end of the lift the wheel chock and the strap anchor bolts hold the mat down in place. For the back end ekraft84 suggested using a heavy duty double sided tape. I found some double sided tape for laying carpet so I thought I'd give that a shot.

I am very happy with how it turned out. I don't know why I didn't do this years ago. I am just hoping that when I roll a bike on that the tape is strong enough to hold the mat in place.

I still have some more on the gift cards and I am just trying to figure out the next steps. I also got some Pitbull accessories for the garage from my parents I am just waiting for them to show up. Once I decide where to mount things I will have another update.

I've got to ask when painting ur garage did u just mask the garage door tracks/mounting rails prior to painting? Or uninstall to get a cleaner paint job. I'm going to be painting my garage soon and have been pondering this question.

For the white I just edged around things with a brush and then used a roller on the walls. The red stripes were spray painted so for that part I used brown craft paper and tape to cover up light switches, doors and door hardware. There should not be any need to take the door tracks down.

My god, the white SV is a thing of beauty! I've got an '08 in Gray (can be seen in my garage thread, don't want to muddy up yours). Where did you source the headlight? I see that one all the time on SVs.

Thanks!

Thanks man. The headlight is an LSL Urban headlight kit. When I built the bike in 08/09 I believe I was the first one to put the headlight on an SV(or at least I had never seen one. It was new at the time and the Yamaha Mt03 light craze hadn't started yet. Here are a couple better pics of the bike.

Can you tell me about the light fixtures you used with the 2 LED bulbs each. Hard to see on the phone. Is it just a double gang fixture or...

Yup just a spliter to run 2 bulbs in one socket. The 100watt LED bulbs only draw 17 watts so 400 watts of bright white light drawing 68 watts. I am really happy with the light output.

After a little over a year I have some updates. Nothing to major but I am happy with the little changes.
A couple years ago (in our last house) I bought a metal shelving unit for all the motorcycle gear. When we first moved into our new house, that rack was used for storage in the basement. I decided that I wanted it back in the garage to be a gear rack again. In order to make it fit where I wanted it, I had to shorten the work bench by about a foot. Not ideal but I still have a good work space.

F715AE60-D7EE-4F4C-800F-192D0744BEF5_zpsx3zkjf6e.jpg

I also finally came up with a solution for my bench top. Originally I wanted to do a stainless top but the cost was going to be more than I wanted to spend on it. So i ended up spending about $50 and I am happy with the result. I spent $30 on a heavy rubber runner that was almost the perfect size to cover the bench. I trimmed 1 inch of the end and about 3 inches off the front. To give a nice clean finished edge on the front, I used 1.5" aluminium angle. I will do something to finish off the ends, probably just paint it black or I might miter the aluminum and put 2 little pieces on each end.

Right now this is kind or my junk corner. I have plans to clean it up but its lower on the priority list. Eventually I would lit to do built in cabinets.

I also added a shelf up in the high part of the ceiling a few months ago. It holds all the awkward things like golf clubs, snowboards and coolers that clutter up a space. I will likely paint the bottom white so that it blends in a little bit with the lower part of the ceiling. I also picked up a COTA flag last month at the MotoGP races in Austin and i thought this was a cool place for it.

Man it has been to long since I updated this. I just realized that I didn't mention the helmet shelf above the bikes.

I think that's it for now. I am hoping this summer to clean the floor and get it looking a little better.
