Started my new project about a month ago by tearing down the old 1905 carriage building turned 1 car garage that was getting to point where it was basically falling down.

Old garage

After getting that demo'd and hauled I started tearing up the existing slab. I figured that would be pretty easy with a jack hammer - but there were actually 3 different slabs from over the years where they just kept pouring new over old.

Getting that all torn up took forever, but I was able to use the old chunks for fill to fill some of the area for the new garage.

Drawing of new garage idea:

Nice! I'm looking forward to following along, and watching your progress. Are you going to do all of your prep work on the slab yourself, or hire that part out?

After getting the permit and laying everything out with string and batter boards, I rented an auger and started digging 12" post holes.

I live in upstate NY, so I went down 48" and poured in 10" thick cement in each hole. The local inspector came and inspected the holes and I got the all clear to proceed.

First post in and lumber delivered - great success.

Some more posts in the holes - I did this completely by myself since it was on a day off from work and no one around to help. I felt like a 90 year old man that night after all that.

21 posts total

Started bracing them and getting them plumb and straight and the corners square.

Getting the splashboards on, getting the girts on, and starting getting the headers/truss support beams up.

Framing mostly done, headers up, ready for the trusses

I got the trusses, added the overhang ladder on the the ground

I hired out getting the trusses set, some things are better left to the pros. It was the best $800 I spent on the project so far - I really dont like being up that high doing stuff like that.

I got 5 attic trusses and three scissor trusses to leave room for a lift in the last bay. With the 8/12 pitch roof, that'll give me a 12'x20' attic space with 7.5' headroom.

Trusses up, I left the old fence up for now even though it is in front of the garage door openings so I can still keep the dogs in the yard and let them run during construction.

Roof purlins up on the front - now its starting to look like something

Starting on getting the stone spread out for the slab base

Getting there. I'm also adding an 8' overhead door out the back for access to the back yard through garage

Getting the roof tin on - I had hired some help for this too.

This is pretty much where I'm at with it now - gonna get the slab poured hopefully next week. Depends on how much time I can spend on it this weekend getting it prepped.

You are a hard worker! Looks nice, we moved from Buffalo 29 years ago. I love to see the trees change color like in some of your pics. Subscribed!

Very nice!!! What plans do you have for the inside?

I'm gonna leave it pretty much like a basic garage inside, unfinished for now. The rear right area will be where the workbench and tool boxes will go, a lift in the right garage bay.

The left rear will be where the stairs will go up the attic, the attic will just be rough done with probably plywood walls.

The rest of the area will be for cars and random junk.

Started sheathing with OSB - I wanted to get some of it enclosed before pouring the concrete so the leaves wouldn't blow in all over the wet slab.

I didn't have time to get it all enclosed over the weekend since I was on-call for work and of course got called like 6 times.

Concrete trucks showed up this morning:

Starting to pour

5" of concrete from the back of the garage to about half way, then taper to 4" at front to give a slope for water runoff. It took almost exactly 17 yards. 4000psi

Floating it. And now waiting for it to be ready for the power trowel.

Getting it enclosed, almost fully sheathed. Getting the 4x8 pieces up by the gable in and cut right was a real pain.

Gonna wrap it next and probably leave it like that until spring and side it then. In the meantime I'll get the garage doors and the man door installed, and maybe start the interior wiring.

What a great build!!

On a garage we had built 11 years ago. we used vertical board and batten looking vinyl siding. The eaves were horizontal siding. We have gotten lots of compliments on it looking really nice.

You will be busy this winter getting it wired. Put in lots of outlets. Will the inside walls have OSB on them as well?

Utah...SNOW BLOWS!
Looks like you may have gotten it enclosed just in time, I imagine snow days are coming soon!
Looking forward to more progress pics... :)

Board and batten siding is on the short list of options. I definitely want the barn look.

I'll leave the inside walls open for now.

Almost have it all wrapped, windows in, front garage doors in, and the man door in. Ran out of staples doing the house wrap, I'll have to stop and get some more tomorrow and finish that up after work. It'll pretty much stay like this through the winter unless we get more of these really nice warm weekends like we've been having - maybe I'll get the soffits done then.

I'm gonna leave that fence up until spring time when I move it, looks terrible but I need it to keep the dogs in the yard so they can run around.

Front is almost done, just need gutters and light fixtures. And lots of work on the driveway and tear down fences - but that'll have to wait a while.

I really like the Azek PVC trim

I really like those doors. Are they steel? They look aged.

They're wood doors - Clopay semi-custom. Yup they're older and have the look I wanted so that worked out.

Believe it or not I found them for sale online and when I showed up to pick them up, this was the house they were on. They had a 4 car garage and threw in the 4th door for free so I have an extra too.
