Storage Box for wheeled welder

This is for those of you with a Miller welder on wheels, the Millermatic 212s and 252s. The ones that open from the side, and the door lifts up and rests on the top of the cabinet. There may be other models or sizes with a similar cabinet. I think the Hobarts are made the same way, not sure about a Lincoln. That door design means you can't store anything (gloves, helmet, clamps, etc.) on top of the welder. Or, at least if you do, it all has to come off to change wire. And it is not really designed for storage, so "stuff" will fall off when you move the welder. I have a 212, and soon after I bought it I began to wish I had bought the 211 and a cart, so I could keep all my welding tools together. But I had what I had, so I began to think how I could store my "stuff" with the welder, and still open the door. I also wanted to keep my plasma cutter with the welder. This is what I came up with.

A storage box mounted above the welder:

With a door on the same side as the welder door:

The box is 1/2" plywood, painted Miller blue on the outside, and a clear varnish on the inside:

It is mounted on over travel ball bearing drawer slides, so I just push it back:

And open the welder door:

The welder door opens all the way, without touching the storage box:

Another view, with everything closed up:

A cradle on the other side:

Holds the plasma cutter:

No holes were drilled in the welder, everything mounts to existing bolts. Some of the bolts were replaced with longer ones.

The rear frame extends up high enough to mount a couple of garden hose racks for the cables:

Just a close up of the hose rack mounting:

It is all 1" sq thin wall tube with 1" X 1/8" angle for mounting tabs, 1/2" tube and flat strap for the plasma cradle. The ends of the rear frame are open at the top, a good place to keep the nozzle pliers and a chipping hammer. I don't know why I have a chipping hammer, I guess a hold over from the old flux core welder.
The recessed top on the box keeps anything stored there from falling off. For those of you who don't build anything with wood, a sheet metal box would work as well.

That looks like it could have been sold with the welder day one. Really like the whole concept and how it came together. Excellent stuff.

I have more questions than answers.
I have been trying to decide how to make some storage on my Esab that I picked up. This looks like a great idea. Already have the an assortment of slides to pick from. May have to add a door for tips and shields, etc. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome setup and very creative !!

I'm going to steal/borrow some features when I build my own weld cart.

Got some nice ball-bearing slides at garage sale that will come in handy. Also thinking I might just use metal tool box for the storage on top. Cantilever tool box might be just the ticket !! ;)

Thanks again for sharing OP !!

Miller should take notes from this one!

At least they should use the idea of a place to store the leads.

No need to steal, all ideas freely given in exchange for all the great ideas I get from GJ.

The slides I used on this are recycled from a lateral file cabinet. They allow the drawers to extend past the front of the cabinet for easy file access. Over travel slides are available new as well, something like this would work. If buying new, be sure to get the "stay closed" feature, otherwise your box will slide when moving the welder.

I like your idea of using a ready made tool box. Are you listening, Capt. Chrysler? That would be a METAL tool box! :rocker:

That's really slick. Seems like the plasma unit sticks out a bit though, I might have put it up top somehow to reduce effective footprint. :dunno:

NOW you tell me.

I will have to look / measure to be sure, but I think the cutter will fit on top of the box. But so far it has not been a problem on the side. The cables in the back hang out to the sides a bit, so the whole thing is kinda wide anyway. It usually stays in one place, only gets pulled out for a floor sweep.

But that is a great idea, and could be allowed for when building the box. Also, the box could just be an open shelf. But it seems like a waste of effort to build a frame for the drawer slides and only have one level of storage. The box is effectively two shelves, one inside (dust free for the helmet) and one up top.

Wow, that looks awesome! I have a 252 and I am planning on building a stand for it with some offroad casters... will be stealing some of those ideas!

From someone who bleeds Miller Blue, I love it. Absolutely fantastic job!

Mike.

Mike, I have perused several of your shop/build threads. Knowing your attention to detail and craftsmanship, this is an especially meaningful compliment. Thanks.

As for the blue, I recently added a BendPak 4 post lift. So I have Miller blue and BendPak blue mixed in my veins. Haven't cut myself since I got the lift, so I am not sure what that looks like. :dunno:

I have decided on a Rust-Oleum "Deep Blue" (with some Apple Red thrown in from time to time) to paint any shop-made fixtures/furniture I build. The blue is not a perfect match to Miller or BendPak, but as long as they are not side by side, it works for a "theme". What I really need to do is repaint some of the equipment I have that is gray, orange, black, green, etc. The mismatch is troubling to my OCD side. But, like you, I don't paint in the shop, so any of that will have to wait for spring/summer weather.

Thank you very much for the compliment and for appreciating my thread/posts.

As far as the color, if memory serves I think it is a Rustoleum blue that I found to be pretty close to Miller blue as well when I built my welding table.

Mike.
