It's an electric driven generator welder. Think of an engine drive but instead of being powered by a combustion engine, this is driven by an electric motor. As with almost all generator type welders, they weld very smooth, but have been long outdated by modern transformer machines, let alone inverter boxes.

They are 2 basically different companies but I have actually used a welder like the one above a time or 2. Once on top of a kiln in a big cement plant repair. They were beautiful for factory work. Guy I worked for had bought half a dozen at auction for 2 or 300 a piece. Didn't cost much and in this case wheeled them up in a freight elevator.
I used one was in a maint shop in a plant and maybe once on a ship repair.

hell that looks new! Heres 1 i'm restoring. From research so far its 1 of 25 built by cat using 2 Lincoln 300 amp machines ganged together. Its 60 years old, built for pipeline and bridge work.

We have an old Lincoln Electric torpedo welder where I work. 3 phase, 600V input and we run them off 20A fused disconnects which are installed all over the plant.
Great smooth arc but it has so much output it is tricky to adjust when you're welding smaller stuff. As stated before its pretty much just a 3phase, 600V motor driving a DC generator.

Edit: Not sure if the OP understands but it is 300A OUTPUT at 40VDC. The three phase part is the input.

That was what Hobart called a motor generator welder, every booth in their school had one, when I was there in the 70's . They weld smoother than a glass ***.
